01 Apr 12 - part 1

"...All you need is Lon..."

SouthSide would like to announce the she's retiring from the position as Chicago's local scene queen...

April Fools, blogspot readers! However, there's no foolin' about today's exciting adventure around town. SouthSide kicked off her April calendar with not one but two parties, one in Rogers Park and the other in Wicker Park. Within the Glenwood Arts District, she attended a very special CD release party featuring more than just the guest of honor on stage but delicious pizza and yummy cake and other guest performances too. The Red Line Tap was the fitting place to hold whitewolfsonicprincess' 10 + 1 CD release party where invited family, friends, and fans had the pleasure of hearing select songs off the new album live. Also special guests Chris Bock and Lon Lennon entertained the audience with lively acoustic sets before whitewolfsonicprincess took the stage.

C Bock Chris Bock

SouthSide recommends checking out this singer/songwriter who opened the music portion of whitewolfsonicprincess' party with an acoustic performance full of heartfelt falsetto amidst an electric/folk sound. This reviweer liked how his voice vividly popped the lyrics to life even while in a downtempo ballad where the vocals deeply conveyed such tender emotions inside his falsetto range. Though the electric was a little overpowering, the riffs combined with the harmonica rhythms added the right amount of energy without losing the heartfelt tone during the few songs performed like My City's In Ruin and Percy Sledge's Dark End of the Street. Also, this reviewer suggests rockin' your love foor the Fab Four to the ukelele with Lon Lennon (John's long-lost cousin from Liverpool). His short set entertained the audience with his renditions of Strawberry Fields and Bobby Darin's Beyond The Sea (sung in French and English) before ending with The Marcels' Blue Moon.

Before premiering live selections off the new CD, 10 + 1, whitewolfsonicprincess founding members, Carla and James opened with an emotional (and teary) speech thanking those who made the album possible. SouthSide highly suggests honing into your organic side to this band's psychedelia groove amidst the modern folk/rock sound and music at their next performance. whitewolfsonicprincess (one word, blogspot readers) rocked the stage with a lively version of the new album that featured energizing momentum and spirit reminiscent of the late 60s/early70s folk scene as heard in opening song, Inner Light (listen closely to the lyrics and hear the personal mantra). The live version also featured guitarist Victor Sanders and saxophonist Nick performing with the band on the songs in which they recorded with them. For example, SouthSide's favorite Spanish flamenco-inspired song, Lady in the Sand, was vividly brought to life with Victor's electric riffs inter-tangoing James' Latin rhythm. The unique combination of the two guitars created the mysterious yet dreamy vibe felt within this particular folk song that did more than capture the fiery spirit of a flamenco dance but had fan Charles doing a passionate interpretive dance for the audience. Meanwhile, during Radio Man, whitewolfsonicprincess' organic folk/rock music easily merged with the cool rhythms of Nick's saxophone thus changing it into a lively contemporary sound. Under this newly blended music, Carla became quite dramatic with her expressive body language and vibrantly dynamic within her chantenuese-like vocals. SouthSide had a hard time picking other songs to suggest, blogspot readers, since each one during this show was equally worth your time to listen. Yet this reviewer does recommend Black, Black Wings (for its calm sound one minute then fiery momentum the next under a folk-driven sound) and Fallen (for the intense melodic guitar rhythms and tempo which rocked out the set). Blogspot readers can expect a review on whitewolfsonicprincess' 10 + 1 CD soon but in the meantime, visit http://www.whitewolfsonicprincess.com for music and information on when and where they will be rockin' the stage again.

23 Sept 12 - Farmer's Market

Photo0114

Hey, blogspot readers, let's go the farm! Actually, if you live in a big metropolis city like Chicago, the farm comes to you. From May until October at many locations around the city (including the downtown area), there's always a Farmer's Market site that's connecting local food growers with people with fresh fruits, vegetables, meat, cheeses and more. SouthSide and her daughter spent a fun Sunday morning at a local Farmers Market site at Independence Park (located at Irving Park Rd and Hamlin) where they were also having a book swap, free Yoga class, hot rockin' bluegrass music (which anyone who plays an instrument could join in the jamboree) and free arts and craft for the kids. And this reviewer had plenty of time to browse, sample (believe it or not, SouthSide tried some tofu) and shop at the Market right before Da Bears won the game against St Louis Rams.

Photo0117 (from Jolly Posh booth)  Photo0112 (from the St Rogers Abbey booth)

This Market basically had yummy treats to buy like real bangers (sausages to you Yanks) and back bacon (real bacon ...not the fatty stuff in the grocery store) from the Jolly Posh (http://www.spencerfoods.com) to honey sticks in a variety of flavors like chocolate, root beer and strawberry lemonade, delicious sweet corn  (from Twin Garden Farms in Harvard, IL) and fresh mushrooms (from River Valley Kitchen in Burlington, WI - try their spicy spinach artichoke dip!). SouthSide does advise bringing your own reuseable shopping bag (or two) or a cart because on this day, there was good apple cider by the gallon (from Klug Orchards in Berrien Center, MI) being sold in which she did purchase a half gallon. Next time, she's buying two. This reviewer and her daughter browsed at other vendors that were there like the booth featuring all organic beef, pork and chicken by Grass Fed (SouthSide will be getting some steaks to sample at the next one) and try the Gouda cheese with nettles in it by Stamper Cheese as well as the yummy strawberry jam by Katydid Homemade Condiments. From St Rogers Abbey, SouthSide was told that the lemon tart was to die for but she's more of an apple tart girl (and yes, it was die for too). She highly suggests buying some bread and/or tarts from the sisters where all the proceeds from the sales go to finance the Chicago Soup Kitchen (located at Central and Race) and other services.

Yet, besides promoting people to eat more healthy and naturally, it's also about getting people to read more via the book swap or cleaning out the old and unwanted electronics cluttering around your home via the electronics recycling drive. This reviwer and her daughter donated a bag full of books generally not read anymore to the book swap in exchange for 6 gently used books (1 for this reviewer and 5 for her daughter). Books that weren't "sold"  during this Farmers Market were donated to another great organization called Open Books (check out the location on 213 W. Institute Place near the Chicago Brown Line station), a nonprofit that supports literacy by operating as a bookstore with a wide range of books, comics, manga and more within rather reasonable prices. And for those who wanted a little exercise in between shopping, there was a mini yoga class and for the kids, arts and crafts making Japanese soot sprites in which SouthSide made a red one for her shy daughter. The non-food items sold at this Market was handmade soaps and lip balm and pet products like this water container that can be shared by both dog owner and dog. And for your musical enjoyment, there was a bluegrass group singing and playing lively songs that anyone who plays or sings could join in.

The next Famers Market at Independence Park will happen on Oct 14 and 28. Those will be the last market Sundays until next year, blogspot readers. Visit http://www.gipna.org for more information.

16 Nov 12 - Chicago Roots Collective fest

Photo0307 ~ Andy Metz performing

Hey, blogspot readers, it may be a bit chilly to hold a festival but it's not too chilly to attend night one of Chicago's hot rockin' 2-day event. Tonight at Beat Kitchen, this reviewer was there for the opening festivities of the 4th Annual Chicago Roots Collective in which features some of the best singer/songwriters and bands performing on two floors.

Upstairs, SouthSide did check out a part of the acoustic acts where her friends Bassel and Andy Metz (bassist of Hero Monster Zero)were performing along with others featured in the lineup such as Kathy Greenholdt, Matt Burke, The Western and Anthony Galdino with Jarryd Scott Stemier headlining. After opening his set with an emotionally charged tune called Death and Taxes (in which Andy's voice projected such vocal fervor on the lyrics while highlighting a heartfelt tone), this singer/songwriter entertained the listenting audience with some selections from his band Hero Monster that also included a song inspired by an epic poem. There was where Andy did rock the stage with his vocally charged tone and furious acoustic riffs to match the energized momentum felt surrounding the upstairs room. And even while performing in a melodic downtempo rhythm, Andy wonderfully projected such emotion and fervor on his lyrics that he made you feel what he was feeling at the time of composition before including the audience to help him out towards the end. SouthSide highly recommends checking out Andy Metz and his rockin' band - Hero Monster Zero at http://www.facebook.com/heromonsterzero.

Meanwhile downstairs, bands like The Future Laureates, Jeff Brown and Band Called Catch were rockin' the stage opening for Molehill and Ewing Theory. Despite missing her friend's, The Future Laureates, set, SouthSide did enjoy  the final few minutes of her other  friends, Band Called Catch (http://www.myspace.com/bandcalledcatch) and their hot performance which included fun songs like Moon Pie and Done It Again as well as the customary frisbee toss where some lucky fans were able to win cool band merch prizes before turning the stage over to her friends - Molehill for their show. After thoroughly frightening the audience a little with the blaring sound of an air raid siren, this local band kicked off their set with a boisterious clash of piano-driven alternative/rock sound.  After not seeing this band for over two years, blogspot readers, SouthSide noted the distinct change in sound and intensity Molehill projected throughout the set thus immediately liking the band's "new" look and music especially the emotionally charged energy featured in the chorus (during No Reprieve) when the vocals were combined with heartfelt and dynamic tone. Nope it wasn't the same band she had seen on stage at Joe's On Weed St. Molehill definitely upped their rock sound (as well as image) for more powerful energy and fury to electrify the stage with intense guitar riffs and crescendo rises that (at times) left you breathless for that burst of momentum at the bridge. Such energy did have this crowded back room rockin' to the heart-racing tempo especially during Almost Broken. Featuring other songs like I'm Okay, Money Life and Wildfire, Molehill did project a certain amount of profound sadness to their highly energized performance when performing the song The Fall (dedicated to an old friend) where this reviewer honestly felf the pain and angst experienced from the lyrics. Yet what truly made this song quite special was the energized gusto that rocked out the conclusion of the song. Also, Molehill got a little futuristic and space-like with their music during F# to which had this crowd dancing to the electronica soundwaves before rocking the stage to an epic-sounding intro to Control which suddenly had this venue overheated from the bodies moving to the rhythmic beat especially while dancing along with the band to Interlude. SouthSide highly recommends rockin' to the "new" electrifying soundwave projected by Molehill at their next performance, blogspot readers. For more information, visit http://www.molehillmusic.com.

24 Aug 12 part 1

Oh no!

Watch out!

Be careful because something sinister and deadly is about to go down especially when deep inside the seedy word of underground gambling. Sometimes ...you're either dealt a bad hand or not playing by the house rules. And if you want to know more, SouthSide then highly suggests blogspot readers tuning in at http://www.cafekremlin.com every Friday night at 8p (CST) for next installment of Cafe Kremlin from now until Oct 5th.

On Friday night, this reviewer attended a party held at Elbo Room for the premiere screening of Cafe Kremlin episode one in which was followed by a sneak peek of episode two and then the world premiere of Lucid Ground's new video, "All To You". In a nutshell, this web-based series is about two friends, Michael (Jon Kasunic) and Banks (Ariel Grigas)  living dangerously on the edge within the underground grambling world where they enjoy taking suckers for a ride during their "fixed" games of high stakes poker. Plus, they're also two partners in a quick rich, money-making scheme by placing online bets for their clients that now includes a suspicious new player.

What and why does this character make him so suspicious? Tune in to episode three, "Knocking A Zero Off" and beyond to find out, blogspot readers.

Filmed entirely in Chicago, Cafe Kremlin weaves more intrigue and suspense into the plot by the end of the second episode because you get the distinct feeling the two main characters are about to head into treacherous waters due their new partnership and association with this particular Russian character named Sergei (protrayed by Vernon A. Hintt III) . Strong focus on the "Russian" here. This reviewer won't give too much away about episode two "Weird KGB Vibe", blogspot readers, but you'll definitely feel that vibe someone's about to get doublecrossed when it's over and this reviewer is betting it won't be the "soft spoken" Russian either.
Still there's nothing glamorous or lavish when you're brought inseid the world of Cafe Kremilin. The production and design teams did a good job scouting and choosing locations around Chicago that would depict what the underground gambling world would be and feel like. No one's living in Gold Coast mansions or penthouses as playing poker in some secret hidden Capone backroom, blogspot readers. Try any ordinary apartment or row townhouse and neighborhood bar for Kremlin's scenery. The cast (seen thus far in the first two episodes) offered a sense of realism to their characters they portrayed from Michael's cociane-snorthing girlfriend, Alyssa to Sergei and his silent group henchmen. There are other characters that you'll meet such as Carmine (played by Harry W. Walters), Lisa (played by Rachel Joy Mazza), Jake, Michael's older brother (played by Jordan Miczek)and Chicago's own World Ranked Super Middle Weight Contender Don "Da Bomb" George as himself.

Besides the Chicago's rarely filmed locales and cast, Cafe Kremlin also featured music by local bands especially in the first two episodes by Lucid Ground and 72 Hours. Songs used in episode one was Lucid Ground's Shaken Crown and 72 Hours' The Elephant Song meanwhile in episode two it was all Lucid Ground and their Breaking Point and Learn to Speak songs. And speaking of Lucid Ground, it was time to view the band's new video, "All To You" after watching episode two, blogspot readers. This video featured random shots of the band members before, during and after their recent performance at the House of Blues ...even with candid shots of them backstage and dressing rooms. For more information about this band, visit http://www.lucidground.com.

24 Aug 13 - I AM Fest

Dan Olvera

I AM Fest 2013 ...Chicago's one-day independent arts and music (and sometimes more) festival under one roof at House of Blues happened over the weekend, blogspot readers. Besides featuring live music performances by up and coming artists and bands like Pirates!!!, Eagle Trace, and Leah Druzinsky, there were vibrant colorful displays of modern to abstract and poster art as well as shiny pieces of jewelry by local artists and craftsmen for fest goers to purchase. This, in a nutshell, is what I AM Fest is all about -showcasing the best of who's making Chicago's local scene thrive in art and music. Previous I AM Fest showcases have featured live performances by the original Chicago Noise Machine alums (A Birdsong Valentine, Echo Son, 72 Hours, Lucid Ground), I Fight Dragons, Mason's Case, Workout Music, Bambi Raptor and many more. This year's lineup featured a wide variety of music genres from hip hop/rap to neo R&B/soul and pop/alternative rock by bands like Eagle Trace, RayIsDude, Social Focus, Leah Druzinsky and Kelsey Montanez. I AM Fest's headliner was Energy Commission with the winners of the Battle of the Bands opening. SouthSide highly recommends checking out all of the bands (and artists) listed in this review.

The Pirates!!!

Arrgh, mateys! Thar be Pirates (http://www.reverbnation.com/thesepirates) plunderin' the legendary House of Blues stage! However these weren't any ordinary swashbucklin' pirates like Captain Bluebeard or Jack Sparrow appearing on stage. Nope, blogspot readers. These were a vessel-load of rockin' scallywags came for your smokes, alcohol, gold, pearls and the pretty girls! This wild and crazy fun band got I AM Fest 2013 off to an energetic start by performing with a groovilicious dance sound during their hot (and sometimes steamy) R& B set. Wowing the many wenches and buccaneers with songs like Pleasure, the Boogaloo song and their theme song, they truly got out of control on stage when their captain leader somehow was able to strip out of his jeans to reveal his leopard-print leggings. According to Elbo Room owner/manager Dave Cook, the Pirates' front man goes a little further than this with his stage and stripping antics (almost the full monty but I AM Fest is an all-ages show so no nudity here), blogspot readers. This reviewer enjoyed dancing to this band's hot saxophone rhythms amidst the lively upbeat swing felt throughout the set.
Rory Tyer Band
Even though having a bit of technical difficulties before their performance, Rory Tyer Band (http://www.rorytyerband), continued the I AM Fest fun with their acoustic pop/rock which featured an intense as well as ferocious sound and vibe, blogspot readers. Singer/songwriter Rory and his band were all about rockin' out the stage while keeping that momentum on a level high that was started by opening band Pirates. Also there was a moment when they cooled things down with a laidback tempo allowing his vocals to shine especially during a pseudo-gospel toned song though keeping that fiery energy in tact from the guitars. This reviewer enjoyed Rory's storytelling style prominently featured within his songs ...sometimes painting a vivid picturesque images in your head, blogspot readers, as his voice pumps expressive emotions into each word sung. Not wanting to miss out on the fun, chants of "Rory" from Pirates could be heard before he and the band performed their closing song.
Phil Jacobson Band
Closing out the opening acts featuring the winners of this year's I AM Fest Battle of the Bands, Phil Jacobson Band's (http://www.reverbnation.com/philjacobson) set featured a rockin' smooth blend of pop/alternative sound with a bit of bluesy style music to compliment Phil's natural vocal tone. What SouthSide enjoyed the most about this band was the male back up singers. Yes, you heard correctly - male back-up singers whose vocal harmonies wonderfully matched this singer/songwriter's voice range during choruses to such songs like Don't Let Me Leave, Life With the Fool and As One. While on stage, Phil and the band also got this crowd on the main floor grooving to the beat when they added some funky R&B and smokin' hot guitar stax rhythms thus creating a cool upbeat tempo before closing out his set with the title track off his current release - Love Right Now.

Kelsey Montanez
Hanging out back stage for a moment, SouthSide met up with her good friend Kelsey Montanez (http://www.kelseyofficial.com) and her band before they appeared on stage to which Matt had something witty to say in a form of a "knock knock" joke. Lately this dynamic singer/songwriter has been getting noticed by the local press for her music ...and rightly so because she's one of the few powerfully dynamic female vocalists rockin' Chicago's vibrant music scene. Kelsey's no stranger to I AM Fest either, blogspot readers. She rocked the stage back in 2010 and again she rocked it in 2013 with another show-stopping performance. Whether she's performing acoustically or amplified with her band, Kelsey packs a lot of intense emotions into each word sung in her songs to which you're meant to feel the same raw feelings as she does. There are moments when she's projecting like a woman deep in pain while in others she's the woman who will not be pushed aside. That's how real Kelsey can get during her performances, blogspot readers. The highlight of her set came when performing the lyrical version to the song Out Of Sight that she did with another rising local artist Chance the Rapper before ending with Sold My Soul.
RayIsDude
Being the only hiphop/rap artist in the I AM Fest lineup is somewhat groundbreaking, blogspot readers. However when it comes to this Jefferson Park rapper RayIsDude (http://www.wearehockstar.com), he has attracted quite of a following in recent years. SouthSide has seen him around town (especially at Elbo Room) rockin' the stages with his upbeat rhythms and beats which match his realistic (and sometimes inspirational) lyrics about life in the city like Chicago. And even though this reviewer isn't hip hop's/rap's biggest fan, she does have some respect for Ray who drops a little knowledge here and there within the positive message he relates to the crowd. The highlight of his set happened when another rapper Main Event appeared on stage during Raise Hell to which had the main floor head banging to the heavy metal-sounding rap beats before dedicating the song Poor Johnny to all of the people who have been bullied. The song may have been little graphic but Ray spoke the truth, blogspot readers, about how being bullied can have a damaging and negative effect on all involved.

"...Really excited to be here ...it was awesome ...[we] want to say 'thank you' to everyone and Elbo Room..." ~ Ben McMunn of Social Focus

Social Focus
"...[I AM Fest] is good so far..." according to Elbo Room's Dave Cook who also excited like SouthSide to see the next band, Social Focus (http://www.socialfocusmusic.com) performing on stage. So were some of the band's family and friends along with the many fans who came to I AM Fest in support of this rising band. Little did this reviewer know after finding Social's demo CD at Elbo Room two years ago that they would be appearing on stage at House of Blues rocking out this legendary venue with such a tour de force. This was, in her opinion, one of their best ever, blogspot readers ...and she has seen them enough times to stand by that statement. Opening with Dreamcatcher and Classic Me off their self-titled release, this band hit the stage hard and never ceased with the intense energy, dynamic fervor and ferocious rock sound until closing with Thank You - a new song dedicated to everyone who have supported them throughout the years. What intense excitement that was running high not only on stage but also everywhere around the main floor in which SouthSide observed their fans either singing along to their favorite Social Focus song and/or dancing to the band's music thrill ride. Whether it was Safeword or Solitaire, fans were totally grooving to the mellow-dramatic rock vibe, blogspot readers, that left many wanting more. SouthSide suggests snagging a copy of their current release to hear other fan favorite songs Note To Self, Telephones In The Skies (yes, the anagram jokingly reads T.I.T.S.) and of course the one rockin' her iPod these days - Merry-Go-Down, Social's trippy song with cool harmonizing vocals.

Av0n Dale

From Memphis, TN, Av0nDale (http://www.reverbnation.com/avdale) combined the energy of an alternative sound with a rockin' twinge of country/rock music throughout this trio's set. What made this set enjoyable was the band's flair for the dramatic that was vibrantly heard from the intricate music composition and rhythmic tempo thus creating two different complimentary styles between the Av0nDale's guitarists. Each vocalist had his own way of making the crowd feel tender sentiment and/or the raw angst of the "every man" tone to draw you deeper into the meaning of the lyrics being expressed over the mic. Fans also wildly delighted in the band's gritty guitar riffs which gave the semi-acoustic sound a slight razor sharp edge especially during the instrumental bridges.
Eagle Trace
Meanwhile from Wisconsin, Eagle Trace (http://www.eagletracemusic.com) wildly rocked the stage (at times) with four guitars thoroughly delighting I AM Fest goers (including the busload they brought with them from their hometown) from start to finish. Boasting such of an intense sound (even with 3 guitars going),  this band is very unique because it features brothers Max (on guitars), Jackson (on bass), Mitch (front man/guitar) and Cass (on drums) as well as Broderick on guitar, blogspot readers. This five-member group definitely knew how to rev up this crowd into a crazed frenzy especially during the instrumental bridges where the light-hearted tempo is fused with wild energy like within the song Attack & Release. What truly caught this reviewer's attention was while Eagle Trace performed Shepherd's Call when Mitch's voice had this youthful yet sexy cool punk tone amidst the many guitar riffs to get you moving to the beat. Also she recommends checking out other songs like Calypso and Separator. After their I AM Fest performance, SouthSide had a chance to speak with Mitch and Cass of Eagle Trace to get their soundbites about performing at this year's fest. According to Cass, "...amazing ...it was a blast..." while brother Mitch commented "...[we] played to bigger audiences but nothing like this ...such a cool place to play..." In a nutshell, blogspot readers, it was so surreal for the band. They told this reviewer that being a new band of 2-3 years old (to the exact day of I AM Fest), they have played at other festivals like Summerfest with another rising local band Makeshift Prodigy as well as Elbo Room twice. On a funny note, Cass would have something to brag about to his friends at school come Monday morning.

Leah Druzinsky
"...this is pretty awesome..." says the next performer Leah Druzinsky (http://www.leahdruzinsky.com) about I AM Fest before her smokin' hot performance on stage. She added that she's hanging out with more people than she did last year because she was nervous about performing on the venue's legendary stage. "...everyone has been awesome..." then commenting about how I AM Fest is an "...artist-friendly festival..." and how she was excited "...to live the dream for one night..." And what performance this dynamic singer/songwriter did in front of the crowd at I AM Fest 2013! Not only did she rock the stage with her her jazz-like chanteuse vocals but also with a lot of sexiness within her stage presence. Yet it was her vocals that was being spotlighted on center stage since there would be moments when she added a touch of sultry coolness or dynamic soulful heat whenever the song called for it. She truly made the crowd feel the heartfelt emotions especially while amidst a downtempo rhythm and R&B groove before really spicing things up a bit with some jazzy upbeat swing. Yeah, blogspot readers, it was that steamy. Rounding out the lineup for I AM Fest 2013 was last year's spontaneously combusted headliner - Energy Commission (http://www.theEnergyCommission.com) who had MORE wild and crazy antics in store for their legions of EC firecrackers. If you thought the opening band Pirates were crazy, you haven't truly felt what crazy is all about until you experienced what happens when this band performs. SouthSide must warn you, blogspot readers, things can really intense as well as insane especially if on the main floor of House of Blues. Be on the lookout for bouncing things (i.e. ginormous balloon balls) bouncing around you ...pink things (i.e. leis, pom poms and more) tossed by the lovely Commissionettes ...sparkly lighted things (i.e. neon finger lights) and who knows what else Energy Commission has in their bags of free giveaways during I AM Fest! And the crowd goes wild as they chase down the prizes and bouncing balloon balls during Energy's rockin' performance. This is what the band is known for - fun and music while performing songs off their soon-to-be released album like We Got Game (done in the style to Tom Petty's Last Dance With Mary Jane) but with a danceable ska twist. Sometimes Energy Commission likes to smash things on stage (like front man Jay breaking his pink ukulele) or create new art (like their artist creating an ultra cool painting with the band's logo on it). There's so much to see ...do and enjoy that you want the fun to last all night long but sadly it's an all-ages show ...so there's a curfew at House of Blues. Before the Energy's performance, SouthSide spent a few moments with Jay to get his thoughts about I AM Fest. Here's what he had to say "...[it's] a great opportunity especially those who came through the Battle of the Bands..." adding that "...no one has that 'we're above you' rock star attitude ...we give what the people expect a show..." He also commented that it was really nice to be a part of production like this at a venue like House of Blues.
Rad Chicago

In between the music acts, SouthSide visited some of the featured artists showcasing at this fest and met people like Dan Olvera (http://www.danolveraphotography.com), Jeff Radomski and Peter Bullock (http://art-hounds.com). While briefly with Dan, SouthSide was informed that there will be a HUGE announcement coming from him on September 20 but in the meantime, check out his work especially his abstract paintings that were on display. Also in the merch area, there was really cool handcrafted and upcycled goods by Rad Chicago ...lovely jewelry pieces and works of poster art by Clinton Worthington as well as villainous masks and more from the local band V Is For Villains who stopped by to recruit new villain minions and promote their return to the music scene happening on Oct 26 in Elgin, IL for the Nightmare On Chicago Street.

Overall, blogspot readers, wow what a show! And it was a near sellout success too! There's a growing support for Chicago's local scene as more and more people attend shows around town like I AM Fest. Reserve this possible date - August 23 - I AM Fest 2014. Hope to see you there!

Until next time, support your local scene,
SouthSide

11 Feb 12

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide knows an event where one can dance to retro tracks by Ministry and The Cure to current music like Grimes and Ladytron under one roof. For over 23 years, good friend DJ Scary Lady Sarah had kept Chicago's underground Goth/Punk/Steampunk/etc scene alive and fashionably well by hosting a monthly Nocturna. Yet, Nocturna is more than just any ordinary local event ...it's a party ...congregation of like-minded individuals of all ages (18 and older), genders, race and backgrounds mingling and having fun until early dawn. Recently this reviewer took a semi-break from reviewing to join her fellow festive Nocturna group members at Bottom Lounge for a pre-Valentine's New Love & Broken Hearts event.

And what a grand event it was, blogspot readers. Under the dancing neon glow, DJ Scary Lady Sarah and her crew decorated the Bottom Lounge within the holiday theme to set the atmosphere while the carefully chosen tracks for the night (some requested) wonderfully provided the Nocturna mood of love. Adding to the fun, the cool photographers of Glitter Guts were on hand to capture everyone's fashionable red carpet moment with free pictures. Plus there were delectable vegan chocolate treats (homemade) by Lady Sarah ...before you say "ew, yuck", blogspor readers - SouthSide was daring enough to try the candy treats and found them to be a little sweeter yet very delicious. Tasted way better the chocolates she got on Valentine's Day. Also partygoers were able to peruse and try out the lovely selection of masks as well as buy Valentine's (for that special someone) mirrors and more created by local craftsman Eliza Stockfish. This reviewer hopes to add a couple of her mask creations soon to her collection.

Upon SouthSide's arrival, Nocturna was already in full swing however the real fun didn't truly start until close to the bewitching hour. The dance floor was always in a constant state of motion from the enchanting yet cat-like moves by the mysterious phantom to couples and individuals displaying their unique dancing skills to each selected track. Even Lady Sarah took a quick break from the booth to dance with the crowd ...so did SouthSide from time to time throughout the night. There were no wrong or right way to dance, blogspot readers. Simply move as the rhythmic tone and beat affected you to move whether it was to The Crux Shadows' Marliyn, My Bitterness ...or Depeche Mode's I Want It All (the roland remix version) ...or Eisenfunk's Conquer. With the right song and/or genre, the dance floor was the life and soul of Nocturna fun especially when Soft Cell's Tainted Love was played. Can't have a Valentine's dance without that infamous "love" song. And to honor the memory of Whitney Houston, Lady Sarah rocked the party by featuring the deceased artist's break out hit - How Will I Know as part of the night's music linuep.

If dancing isn't your cup of tea, blogspot readers, you can do major people watching during your stay at Nocturna. This reviewer, between resting from the dance floor, spent some time meeting her Facebook followers and blogspot readers as well as observing the costumed world around her. Nocturna may project an Euro club/dance atmosphere yet to truly experience it one should "dress" up in their Goth/military/steampunk/punk/etc finest. SouthSide observed many of the retro punk with colorful mohawks to Villainized wear (Mr. Agitator and Fallon Flynn of V Is For Villains) as well as military and industrial. Plus many like this reviewer creating their own style to add into the Nocturna mix. Somewhere lurking amongst us was Ceila Sin - a haunting ghostly figure who necromances and necrotizes everyone ...everywhere with her kiss.

SouthSide highly recommends NOT missing the next Nocturna event which will take place at Metro on Friday 2 March - it's Carnivale fashion and fun from 10p to 4a. SouthSide plans on making another Nocturna appearance ...maybe she's pass out her stash of authentic Mardi Gras beads to partygoers. ALSO: Friday 17 February at Lucky Number (1931 N. Kazy 2

Feliz Cinco de Derby Day, blogspot readers! It's a calendar rarity to be sipping on delicious mint juleps while listening to the local mariachi band playing on the same day for this rockin' Saturday night adventure. Tonight, SouthSide's celebrating I'll Have Another's derby win (she bet on the wrong horse) and the Mexican holiday at Lakeview's hip locale for national and indie acts, Elbo Room with her krazy guitar rock band friend, Kazy. And believe this reviewer, this local band will rock you krazy Kazy-style!

Kazy 15

Kazy rocked the Elbo Room stage with a hardcore mesh of fierce guitar rock, lyrical hip hop verse (at times) with some screamo and more that features an electric violin used as the fourth guitar. They will get and keep you deeply immersed inside the intense Kazy rock madness from the first vibration of the electric chord until the very last has died. Don't expect, blogspot readers, for the band's sound to miss a beat in between. This type of "new" rock music and its blend of other genres is what currently thriving within Chicago's local scene and Kazy like Earthen Grave (another local band featuring violinist Rachel Barton Pine) has certainly tapped into this music market.

Kazy 5

After opening with a rockin' bang of a song, Hooks, SouthSide was instantly hooked onto Kazy's wild style of maddening guitar riffs, furious tempos (sometimes coupled with a "soft" or somber intro - don't be fooled by that), thunderous percussion rhythms and extreme vocals that can scream emotional anguish as well as spin fast lyrical verse (done by front man Rich). This awesome combination, blogspot readers, created one powerful intensifying rock experience for the audience tonight where they literally felt the energy and sound wafting throughout the basement lounge not just hearing it. There were moments during Kazy's set when you saw how intense their krazy maddness inside the music could get from the way each band member tore up the stage which left no inch of it untouched especially when performing songs like LFL and Blown.

Kazy 6

SouthSide highly suggests rockin' the ears to the following (in no particular order) like Choke for its combination of a "soft" lull before being smacked with the extreme intensity of music and vocals at the same time. Front man Rich made the ears bleed from his emotional anguish and pain while the band matched his vocal style note for note. Gamers should recognize this song title since it's featured in the popular video games Scarface and Zombie Strippers. Also she suggests feeling the pulsating heat of the hardcore guitar sound as well as heartfelt angst off the lyrics during Goodbye. Though the vocals were overshadowed by the loudness of the guitars, this reviewer still felt his vocal emotions via the intense sound wafting around the stage. And if you really want to see some intense moments while Kazy performs, blogspot readers, check out their live performance of the new song Violate. WOW - that's all SouthSide can say when hearing this song. She enjoyed the extreme lyrical hip hop vibe within the vocals which were matched with Rich's intense screamo at the chorus as well as the build up towards the bridge where Kazy hits you from all sides with their guitar rock. Yes, this latest song did more than violate the ears - it brutally assualted them within the extreme rock fusion to the delight of their audience before howling at the Super Moon with closer Wolf.

Kazy 8

SouthSide highly suggests rockin' your maddening love for krazy guitar rock with her friend Kazy at their next show. For more information, visit Kazy at http://www.kazymusic.com.

Hey, blogspot readers, it’s an adventure around town fit for a Mom and daughter! Tonight, SouthSide and her “manager” spent some quality time together by attending an all-ages show at Mayne Stage located within the hub of Rogers Park neighborhood. There, they rocked to alternative/rock performances by The Matt Ryd All-Stars and Jess Godwin with April Henry (http://www.aprilhenrymusic.com) opening the lineup.

Photo0562 ~April Henry

Though enjoying the lively, energized performance by this singer/songwriter, blogspot readers, which at times her voice did pop the lyrics to life however there were other times when she did strain to be heard above her own band and/or to reach the unattainable high vocal range. April Henry did pop the stage with a rousing child-like atmosphere full of boisterous sound and tempos but sometimes the two left this reviewer confused especially during her third song that featured a lullaby-like tone before sweeping the audience into a dramatic symphonic pop feel. Even the imagery used inside the lyrics didn’t seem to gell or create a pleasing floetry to the ears. The next song should have had the band tuned down a bit (while keeping that fiery feel in the chorus) so April’s vocals could be vividly heard above the loud guitars. It was nice to see an artist portraying the persona of a little girl who still plays with her dolls yet it was too bad this particular artist was visibly as well as musically overshadowed by the rhythmic groove of the band.

Photo0570 ~ The Matt Ryd All-Stars

He’s a little bit country but still a whole lot of that alternative/pop rock sound, blogspot readers, as he experiments combining the two elements within his latest EP – Ryd ‘Em Cowboy. Matt Ryd and his All-Star band rocked Mayne’s stage with the artist venturing into his country side but not deep enough that he sounds like Brooks & Dunn. Yet the electronic violin rhythms added to his songs did give certain songs a touch of that down home country feel and tone while retaining the lively pop sound as heard in For So Long and Nobody But Me. SouthSide enjoyed the semi-acoustic vibe during 10,000 Angels which the violin rhythms wonderfully helped spotlight Matt’s heartfelt vocals with some dramatic feeling in the lyrics before the rest of the band joined in. POW! This song took a different direction where you felt the vibrant burst of energy and sound though still remaining so heartfelt at the same time. Matt’s set also featured a few songs that were part of television shows like Marianne (featured on MTV’s Made – he’s not really proud of his songs on TV shows ...or so he says), When I Fall (featured on The Brackston Family Values) and this reviewer’s favorite, Healed (featured on an episode of Scrubs), in which had an energizing upbeat tempo from the violin. The audience were invited to dance along with Matt and his funky white guy dance moves when the band performed a rousing version of Stevie Wonder’s classic R&B hit Signed, Sealed , Delivered even though many in attendance weren’t that adventurous to dance, blogspot readers. Visit Matt Ryd and his music at http://www.mattryd.com.

Photo0578

Continuing with that energizing spirit from The Matt Ryd All-Stars band, blogspot readers, Jess Godwin and her band brought to the stage more hip shaking music and rhythmic sound which had many on the now crowded main floor immediately dancing along. This singer/songwriter really spiced things up with more than just her stage presence and vocals ...she added a lot of expressive body language to the mix while popping the lyrics to life. And wow – there was no stopping Jess from setting the stage ablaze song after song amongst the electrified riffs and lively percussions. Besides the highly intense and electrifying feel in this performance, there was also a bit of playfulness between her band members especially with the acoustic guitarist during one particular song. It highlighted the heartfelt emotion heard within Jess’ voice while pouring out her feelings to which one could easily hear the heartache in her voice. During Let’s Get Down, this artist showed off a bit of her sexy feminine and dynamically soulful sides to truly pop this R&B/soul sound within this lively pop/alternative rock song. This was one headlining performance which had a little bit of everything wonderfully meshed together leaving many dancing in the aisles (or their seats), blogspot readers.  Visit Jess Godwin and her music at http://www.jessgodwin.com.

Allo ...allo, blogspot readers!
London's calling and has royally invaded the shores of Lake Michigan once more with another exciting all British (tribute band) rock show!

Tonight, inside the hall of the world famous Double Door, Americans relived memories while groovin' to the era that brought them the powerful vibe and sounds of psychedelic blues/rock as each band performed their greatest hits on stage. This swingin' party included such performances by Cream (Badge), Deep Purple (Deep Shades of Purple), Robin Trower (The Nick Bell Band) and Pink Floyd (In The Flesh).

The night got off to a rockin' start with fine renditions of Cream songs such as Sweet Wine, White Room and more by the fabulous members of Badge. And, SouthSide's happy to report that fans weren't disappointed, blogspot readers. This trio wonderfully recreated the sounds and feel of what was Cream's heyday when this Brit band dominated the music charts with its blues rock riffs and rhythms featured in Crossroads, Badge and SouthSide's favorite, Strange Brew. Yes, chickie birds, this reviewer was righteously groovin' on the dance floor especially during Sunshine of Your Love before Badge ended their set with an homage to Alvin Lee of Ten Years After with I'd Love to Change the World.

Then, the only Deep Purple tribute band in Chicago (perhaps in the US), rocked everyone's face off during the gritty, electrifying sound waves felt and heard throughout this set, blogspot readers. SouthSide along with other fans enjoyed the thrilling rush of Deep Shades of Purple's rendition of classic hits like Highway Star and Smoke on the Water. There was high intense energy song after song that featured epic guitar riffs and psychedelic keyboard wizardry done in the Deep Purple style as heard in the instrumentals ...and what a rock high this reviewer felt while dancing to some of her favorites -  Hush (a hit Deep Purple didn't write) and My Woman From Tokyo.

And continuing with another electrifying performance was The Nick Bell Band performing the classic epic hits of Robin Trower, blogspot readers. What a hot performance which had smokin' guitar riffs throughout the instrumentals amidst the poetic lyrics found in songs like Bridge of Sighs and Day of the Eagle ...and a cowbell. Yet, it was the deep, raspy falsetto vocals by Richard which had this reviewer swooning with electric fever especially while hearing The Fool and Me. She felt the heated rush rising from the guitar's crescendo thus allowing the ears to soak up every note as the band "made love" to every note during the instrumental of this particular song before ending it with a dazzling display of heart-pumping music to drive the audience around her wild. Many had fun reliving their glorious Robin Trower moment by shouting their favorite song for the band to perform. Even the Double Door's lighting effects did a wonderful job adding to the rock experience for this band (as well as the others before them).

The orgasmic "O" finally happened for this reviewer when the headliner In The Flesh opened with one of her many favorite Pink Floyd songs - Run Like Hell (from The Wall) as members dressed the part with the hammer patches behind their "wall". SouthSide does suggest taping down the box tops to make them not so obvious to the audience's eye that they are boxess used as bricks for the wall. Anyway, blogspot readers, she was a little hard on this particular band than the others because Pink Floyd is one of her favorite rock bands and there was a discerning eye as well as attention to every tiny detail that is Floyd during this set. She knows and lives the songs like Us and Them and Money (off Dark Side of The Moon), though not really liking the added instrumental "fluff" to the song but the cool Floyd vocalist did pop the words to life with his charismatic style and stage persona. However what made In The Flesh uniquely different was this band didn't just perform the standards (i.e. the entire The Wall or Dark Side of the Moon). They took a daring chance performed the entire amazing parts of Shine On You Crazy Diamond (despite the rough audio feedback off the electric) and Wish You Were Here. Yet the happy moment for SouthSide was when they did Floyd's poking fun at politics - Pigs (off Animals) ...she wonders how good is this band's version of Dogs...

Besides the hot rockin' Brit music, blogspot readers, SouthSide spent a few moments getting to know the woman behind the fabulous yet fashionable display of jewelry near the entrance of  Double Door. For over 25 years, Venus Lane Designs  has been adorned around the necks or wrists of such famous rockers like Jimmy Page (of The Who), Steven Tyler (of Aerosmith) ...sports celebrities like Dennis Rodman and band members of Hessler and The Last Vegas. Billed as "...spiritually alive wearable art..." as seen on her business card, this reviewer asked Venus what was her secret behind many of her jewelry designs to which she replied "...I don't draw them out..." but did say that she gets inspired by objects like feathers (even before it became fashionable these days), rocks, and other materials she finds. "...[I've] been collecting stuff since I was a little girl ...started with my grandmother who was an actress..." also adding that her pieces take on an Native American inspiration. SouthSide noted that Venus' jewelry have a professional appearance and style to them however, she learned that Venus herself through "...a lot of trial and error..." Venus would like everyone to know that her jewelry is "...one of a kind..." and that she doesn't "...make the same piece twice..." "...some [pieces] are similar ...some are very feminine and masculine..." says Venus to which she states that every piece has a person vibe. She also can make a custom piece of jewelry for you, blogspot readers, featuring a broken piece from another or an heirloom. For more information, visit http://www.venuslanedesigns.com.

14 Sept 12 - Rookies Gastro Pub / Lounge

Photo0075

Hey, blogspot readers, thank goodness it's Friday! SouthSide's taking a bit of a break from bands (Eva Trix ties wicked knots!) after her "kidnapping" ordeal. While away, she's checking out two new nightspots vying for the attention of clubsters, wannabes, hipsters and et al who want to be seen or simply people watch. In the Bucktown/Wicker Park area - there's Fatpour Tap Works (located on Division near Damen ...and the bar without an outside sign as of yet) and in the Central Lakeview/Wrigleyville area, there's Rookies Gastro Pub/Lounge. SouthSide was at Rookies for an impromptu meet-n-greet as well as a battle of the DJs hosted by her friend Matthew Nalett of Chicago Music Promotions.

Walking into this establishment, this reviewer liked the spaciousness of the bar/lounge ...plenty of table seating inside and outside on the patio area. Enough room to handle the large weekend crowds of barflies and hoppers looking for another hour or two of a good time. Luckily, Rookies is located away from the central (crowded) area where most of the Wrigleyville/Lakeview bar scene is siutated. Sitting on the cusp of the area (between Grace and Newport) along Clark Stree at Roscoe, this bar has the potential in attracting the nightcrawlers walking southward towards Belmont and beyond. While inside this quaint bar, blogspot readers, check out the many portraits of famous sports figures from Sammy Sosa to Larry Bird (in his Boston Celtics uniform), Magic Johnson, Mia Hamm, John McEnroe and more. Sorry, Sox fans, there were no Minnie Minoso, Dick Allen or Frank Thomas seen on the walls. Don't worry, SouthSide will take care of that problem the next time she visits Rookies.

Since Rookies is a sports bar, this reviewer did test a sample of the menu offerings. She was somewhat disappointed because it had the usual choices such as chicken wings, Chicago style hot dogs, and nachos ...nothing really to entice the appetite. On this night, the special of the day was fish tacos and the sampler which included a bit of the wings, jalepeno poppers, nachos, chicken strips and more for $10. She did settle on trying the bar's selection of grilled wings with the Barcardi Honey BBQ sauce and here's where she was sorely disappointed. Though liking that "fall off the bone" effect with the chicken, the plate had a tepid warmth to the touch upon arriving to the bar. There was no smokey smell of the bbq sauce (or any extra sauce and bleu cheese for the veggies) but it did have a slight spicy kick that burned for a couple of minutes in the back of SouthSide's mouth. She did suggest to manager/owner Harial Patel that there should have been fresh veggies and more sauce ...it's a sports bar - come on! Men love sauce on top of sauce when it comes with their wings. And wings are made to be messy, blogspot readers, especially when smothered in some good lip-smacking sauce. Her friend next to her sampled Rookie's nachos and agreed the nachos as well as cheese sauce could have been a litte warmer and spicier.

Another problem SouthSide did find while visiting Rookies was the strange location for the bathrooms. Take the stairs down, they're located in the basement to your right  but the area has a sort of open and unguarded section of the bar where anything or anyone could be lurking unseen because the short hallway isn't well lit. That alone could be a potentially dangerous and security risk for Rookie's patrons if they are not too careful about their surroundings down there. Hopefully, management and staff will correct that by adding more lights and removing the extra chairs cluttering the far wall. Speaking of the staff, SouthSide found them to quite bubbly and cheerful (especially Jessica who was behind the bar that night) and ready to create to your favorite drink concoction or speciality. Tonight's drinks special featured peach / dirty apple shots and Old Style - both for $3. Jokingly, Matthew told SouthSide why many show up at Rookies around the bewitching hour and stay until closing because it's the home of the cheap drinks/beers prices. Fair enough, it's a tough economy ...and even harder on the restaurant/bar industry - so if you want to spend as well as at the same time save money on your bar tab - check out Rookies.

Sports fans should know that Rookie's is home to the Detroit Lions, Ball St and Michigan St. On Sundays, the bar does offer a weekend brunch (11a - 3p) special featuring a Bloody Mary Bar and food and drinks specials all day/night long. Before leaving, SouthSide did briefly talk to Harial if he has thought about hosting live local music since he does have the space and stage for small acoustic or up to trio acts. He did state he would like to have singer/songwriter as well as something classical but it would need to fit and appeal to the particular young crowd (especially during the weekends). He related that when Bruce Springsteen was town performing at Wrigley Field, he wished he had a Bruce Springsteen cover band performing to entertain the crowd inside the bar both nights. Also he disclosed soon Rookie's will be changing it's entrance from its Clark Street side to the corner door that faces Roscoe and that means the stage would be moving too. All of this should be happening within a few weeks, blogspot readers.

22 Mar 12

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide got a little funky to kick off her weekend! This On The Town adventure brought the roving local scene queen back to Lakeview's hippiest music venue, Elbo Room for a battle of the bands. Local bands were competing for the chance to join a lineup of others at the Whippersnap Music & Arts Festival rockin' Stonehouse Park (located in Earlville, IL) happening in July. The Whippersnap Music & Arts Festival is three (3) days of music featuring over 50 acts on 3 stages, family camping and fun. This year's fest will also include a pre-party, an illuminated forest, craft beers made available at the Main stage and Party Barn (must be 21+), late night movies and more. For more informatin about this summer festival, visit http://www.whippersnapfestival.com.

Among the four competing tonight was SouthSide's friend Digeometric who not only electrified but funkified the basement lounge amidst its intense rock fusion of soul/R&B/psychedelia. This band's spontaneous flow of energy felt throughout had many instantly groovin' to the pulsating melodic beat within the many intricate and intertwining rhythms going at so many different directions yet always on the same accord. At times there was a boisterous blast of music vibrating across the stage meanwhile in others the hot horn section provided the energizing spark of Digeometric's instrumental pieces to counter the cool guitar riffs for that trippy psychedelia feel. What SouthSide saw in this band was the local version of 70s funk masters Parliament and Earth, Wind and Fire combined especially the way they would rock the stage with one fiery hot jam after another. For instance, blogspot readers, Digeometric had many feeling that ska-funk fusion with its dreamy island breeze before suddenly upping the funk sound with some guitar-led Stax rhythms giving the lounge a soulful vibe to groove amidst a dizzy height of crescendos. During that particular song, the band took everyone higher until ending our psychedlic trip with a rockin' landing. Or how about a little electric rock to get the blood cuddling as the horn section spicing up the energy in another epic instrumental piece before taking both energy and music down to a cool jazzy breeze ...SouthSide loved the poetic floetry and subtle excitement wavering within the melodic vibe. This reviewer highly recommends getting your funikied rock groove on at Digeometric's next performance but in the meantime, visit Digeometric at http://www.facebook.com/digeometric and listen to songs WuDawg and Pseudo.
