Tonight's On The Town adventure took SouthSide on a rare journey deep within the West Loop area for an evening of soul/funk/neo-R&B at City Winery. This music revue featured local bands The Diplomats of Solid Sound with The Diplomettes and The Right Now with The Heard headlining the lineup and DJ sets by DJRC and Mr. Gac with a funky montage of video images accompanying the music. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This was SouthSide's first time visiting City Winery which is also a full-scale restaurant/wine bar as well as a sophisticated music venue. City Winery, blogspot readers, can almost be compared to Roger Park's Mayne Stage. The venue itself is quite spacious with ample seating and room near the stage for dancing. However during this performance, the tables in this reviewers were set too closely to each other that you don't have enough room to either move and/or sit comfortably without trying to bump into your table neighbors. SouthSide did browse through the menu which offered a delicious array of yummy food selections to appease your foodie palette. Yet, the main feature of City Winery of course is the wines and it's very extensive with a suggested house selection for tonight's music performance as well as a list of imported and US craft beers. City Winery does also has whiskeys but not much in the cocktail department (they only have The Manhattan) which was somewhat a disappointment for this reviewer. Then again, blogspot readers, this venue's main focus is wines from France, Italy and California that you can either be served from the tap or bottle.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Opening the evening of funk/soul revue was a lively DJ set by host Rich aka DJRC featuring a mix of his favorite sounds of past, present and modern soul/R&B/funk, blogspot readers. Along with his video montage (that included classic clips from Soul Train and a 70s car commercial), the unique combination of sight and sound not only dazzled its audience but also warmed them up amidst the cool AC before The Diplomats of Solid Sound took the stage. This reviewer enjoyed The Diplomats' set but feels it could have been better if the female vocalists, Sarah and Kathy aka The Diplomettes, displayed more of an energizing force in the vocal department to match the fiery soul of the band's music. There were moments, blogspot readers, when both vocalists complemented the music backing them (i.e. Give Me One More Chance) however there were times when the vocals seem lackluster and didn't have that soulful umph to boost the emotion and/or heighten the lyrics to make the soul pop to life. To SouthSide, they seemed to be holding back just a little until the right song or moment to really drive home that dynamic soulful voice to wow the audience. The band behind The Diplomats of Solid Sound was indeed solid in the sound department, blogspot readers. This reviewer found the music to be fiercely intense as well as coolly smooth within its R&B/funk soul fusion that offered lots of energizing buzz especially when you have hot rhythms from the saxophone and steamy funk from the guitars and drums. Even though the saxophone was sometimes virtually overshadowed by the rest of the band, it still made its presence heard and known like during the instrumental jam that set the stage ablaze with a fiery rhythmic beat and swinging tempo for some daring enough to dance near the stage. For more information about The Diplomats of Solid Sound, visit <a href="http://www.myspace.com/thediplomatsofsolidsound">http://www.myspace.com/thediplomatsofsolidsound</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Where The Diplomats of Solid Sound lacked in the vocal department, The Right Now's female lead vocalist made up for it, blogspot readers. Not only did she popped that wow factor with her soulfully dynamic voice but also upped the sex appeal that truly complemented the band and its image for the audience. Hot is not the word for this band's performance at City Winery. It was a steamy ...sultry as well as groove-tastic performance full of rhythmic beats and melodies from beginning to end. This band knew how to get many within the seated area to gravitate towards the dance floor even while it got a little crazy when Adam and Lucas (of The Heard) joined The Right Now thus turning up the funkified rhythm section to full blast. It was an explosion of soul rocking not only the stage but the dance floor during the instrumental bridge. Yet it was Stephanie and her voice which had everyone feeling this band's groove, blogspot readers. At times, she could fog up the room from the sultry sexiness of her voice projected over the microphone especially while the band performed in a downtempo rhythm thus allowing her to shine but when the tempo was more upbeat and happening, that was when she popped the entire to life. *fans self* And when the moment was right - Stephanie didn't hold any emotions back as the intense energy bouncing off the band behind The Right Now assisted in helping her vocals be more expressive on the lyrics. She let the audience have it all including some sassy body language to complete the sex appeal for the band. The true highlight of this set was when she did an acoustic version to Prince's How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore (a rarely covered B-side). Overall, blogspot readers, SouthSide says be prepared to sweat as you groove to the funk/soul sounds of The Right Now at their next performance. This band definitely turned up the heat (even with the AC going) by dazzling the audience with its rockin' energy and steamy yet sultry female vocals by Stephanie. The touch of craziness is simply an added bonus to keep you locked within The Right Now groove. For more information, visit The Right Now at <a href="http://www.therightnow.com/">http://www.therightnow.com</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Get your dance shoes on! It's now truly the time to party, blogspot readers, with The Heard! This local funk jam band many within the audience (including good friend August Forte) kicking up their heels to the rhythmic sounds of their funk/soul fusion on the dance floor area. SouthSide instantly liked The Heard's brand of lively energy and funk vibe as each member got down with their bad selves especially when they paid tribute to James Brown at the beginning of their set. It was very cool to see how his musical legacy had some influence on the music before moving onward to other instrumental songs like The Walrus and Spoon Fork. The music, blogspot readers, can be simplistic with its rhythmic tempo and upbeat groove as well as complex from the way these musicians (especially the hot rhythm section) added a little music piece of themselves into the notes. For instance, listen to The Heard's epic piece titled The Falcon in which you will feel yourself vibrantly soar amongst the towering crescendoes while experiencing the intense melodic tempo around you. The horns vividly expressed the spiraling dizziness of your winged flight as the rest of the band dips and upswings to new heights upon coming towards the end. Then set got a little hotter and a whole lot steamier when Stephanie (of The Right Now) leant her dynamic voice during this performance adding more spice and spitfire that matched The Heard's smooth floetry style. Not to worry, blogspot readers, if you missed this rousing funkified performance by this local band. You can catch The Heard rockin' the stage every Thursday night at aliveOne (located 2683 N. Halsted) ...just be prepared to dance your pants off while having a funky good time. HOWEVER, it was the afterparties as well as the many local shows rockin' the smaller venues/clubs that were getting spotlighted attention from this busy reviewer. Case in point, SouthSide opted to party with her #1 fan, Joe, at Martyrs' (located in the Northcenter neighborhood area) to review Goodnight Criminals which also featured performances by opener Argo Navis and headliner Veritae. Tonight's central theme was all about experimental, mind blowing trips into the electronica/rock music accompanied to random projected images on the screen to enhance your show enjoyment. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/7714421170/" title="Argo Navis 1 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Argo Navis 1" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8283/7714421170_d44e9f6ab2_m.jpg" width="240" /></a> - Argo Navis</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">This reviewer highly suggests blogspot readers rockin' to the tripped out instrumental megatronica rock fusion of Argo Navis at their next live performance. And she truly suggests you seeing this band live for the full and power effect this band and its music will give you. Think of these local guys as a young Pink Floyd when it was all about the instrumental/experimental electronic fusion of rock amidst rhythmic floetry of each guitar, percussion and digital wizardry felt and heard. Argo literally exploded with vibrant blasts of soundwaves upon soundwaves that sometimes came with riff or digital changes to take you further as well as deeper inside the music. Joe said afte a few songs that their music was atmospheric to which this reviewer agreed with him because if there were lyrics, the experience wouldn't have been mind blowing one bit. For example, after the heartpounding intro of one particular song, Argo presented a sort of a calming lull (while scenes of clouds floating by on the screen) in between energetic bursts of momentum and organ rhythms ...there were a few melodic tones here and there but just enough to make you feel that vibrant sound flowing around you. It was intense experience by this quintet of musicians never to be forgotten. For more information about Argo Navis, visit the band at <a href="http://www.myspace.com/argonavisband">http://www.myspace.com/argonavisband</a>.</div><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/7714958994/" title="Goodnight Criminals 1 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Goodnight Criminals 1" height="180" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7258/7714958994_a834001355_m.jpg" width="240" /></a> - Goodnight Criminals<br /><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">It would be criminal if you didn't check out SouthSide's newest friends, Goodnight Criminals, at their next live performance, blogspot readers. Though a step up the notch on the electronica/experimental rock fusion ladder, this local band thoroughly captured the essence and sound of the dark moody themes yet adding some light and texture that you don't go emo. It's more like a club mixture and experimental rock which at times the music does have that danceable groove to the electronica rhythms or you might hear some heartfelt emotions being brought to life off the lyrics. You could say they're almost a millennial version to New Order if you really want a comparison. And just like the previous band, Goodnight Criminals enhanced the audience's show enjoyment with their random images projected on screen that also included scenes of last year's Snow-maggedon. After opening with SouthSide's favorite song - Pretenders (track4 off current EP release - Liars, Thieves and Pretenders), this band rocked the stage with a mix of paced of upbeat as well as downtempo songs from the EP like We Fall Down (which uses scenes from the Michael Douglas movie - Fall Down) where you can feel the electronica melody flowing more in a live setting than off the CD. Still, this reviewer was impressed by the band's energy presented throughout each song to the guitar riffs that offered a razor-sharp edge to a couple of songs and the dynamic falsetto vocals - not usually heard in a genre like this. Also there were moments when the music had piano-driven feel to the song thus adding more melodic tone to Goodnight's electronic sound or when the music did get dark and moody yet retaining a lighthearted vibe for you dance to. Besides the images shown, the lighting sequence for their set also helped enhanced the atmosphere setting the right mood and vibe for their audience. It's a bird ...a plane ...nope, it's an F-16 buzzing by again at the speed of sound, blogspot readers. It's Day 2 of Chicago's Air and Water show and the clear blue skies are abuzzed with planes of all sizes and eras from World War II bombers and parajumpers to the famous Blue Angels thrilling a packed crowd along North Avenue beach. However, SouthSide's not one for crowds but she didn't miss any of the action seen in the skies as planes zoomed pasted as far as UIC (University of Illinois-Chicago)/Medical District and Bucktown areas majority of the afternoon. Today, she opted to rock out her Sunday with her daughter at Three Aces to catch her new friend - The Grisly Hand (from Kansas City, MO) during their double performance there. </div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">This quaint 6-member band were the featured musical guests during Three Aces' Sunday bunch crowd to which they performed a selection of lively, toe-tappin' Americana/folk (with a bit of Country and Western) tunes deep within the heart of the Windy City. Yes, blogspot readers, this reviewer is not a afraid to join a hoedown and rock to some good o'l fashion fun-tastic Americana music presented like this band did. Throughout the first half of their double set, she enjoyed the spirited tempo and inviting atmosphere that surrounded the music of Grisly members and flowed around the backyard of this restaurant/venue. </div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Even while in a downtempo rhythm, the band rocked the yard with intense guitar and/or mandolin picking but there was one minor thing plaguing this performance - sound volume. While the music was great to listen and enjoy, blogpsot readers, the sound quality was a definite issue especially with the band being outdoor. Mostly, during the set, the music outweighed and overshadowed the vocalists but it wasn't a technical issue either. SouthSide, in her best opinion, believes female vocalist Lauren needed more vocal umph of her own to be heard loud and clearly above the guitars standing beside her. She does have the vocal powress to truly make certain songs pop yet it wasn't felt or heard during this particular half of the show. This reviewer wished she had more time to stay for the show's entirity but had another engagement to attend.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Despite the minor technical problems, The Grisly Hand did, blogspot readers, put on a rockin' show at Three Aces. The audience seemed to enjoy the spirited camaraderie and the witty storytelling laced within the lyrics that ranged from heartfelt emotions to humored wit. Off their latest album, Western Ave, this reviewer recommends checking out all four-track but feels Still Feeling Blue and Black Coffee deserve special attention since both songs exhibit a little soul sound not usually heard in Americana/folk music. SouthSide also had a chance to check out Grisly's first album - SafeHouse (from 2010) and suggests getting quite acquainted to their Cherry Mash Waltz and Losin' You (Has Done A Number On Me).</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Hopefully The Grisly Hand returns to Chicago for another show before it's winter but in the meantime, blogspot readers can catch this band rockin' around Kansas at the Uptown Theater and The Riot Room (both located in Kansas City, MO) as well as The Bottleneck on Sept 22 in Lawrence. After rockin' part of with The Future Laureates at SubT in Wicker Park, it was now time to dance til dawn in the Wrigleyville/Lakeview area at Metro with the other fashionable vampires. <br /><br />In its 23rd year, this monthly event hosted by friends William Faith and DJ Scary Lady Sarah (also of The Bellwether Syndicate) spun featured requests (by the Facebook Nocturna group members) from industrial, dubstep and emo to techno, metal and more. This local club scene is nothing like the club scene along River North area - no one's dressing impress another just yourself. Whether it may be a pirate to ALex DeLarge (a Clockwork Orange reference) or post-industrial or something you create yourself. It's nice watching the reactions from those hanging out at the bars on Clark Street while walking towards Metro on Saturday/Sunday morning. Dressing "weird" in black does tend to keep a few from bothering you, blogspot readers. <br /><br />SouthSide knows they don't understand that everyday is Halloween. While at Nocturna, this reviewer did her usual people watching before hitting the dance floor - she loved the array of fashions strutting or dancing around Metro. This monthly "meetin" attracts people of all ages as well as racial backgrounds and beliefs ...it's more like a "safe haven" where no judges on how you're dressing or dancing. And if you want to show off your best industrial or metal dance moves, Nocturna is the event to do it especially at this local venue. Plenty of dance floor to show your fancy footwork while rockin' to tunes like a remix of The Smiths' How Soon Is Now, New Order's Blue Monday or SouthSide's request Cyanotic's Alt_Machines. <br /><br />Tonight's event had friend VVasher VVoman passing out some of her vegan chocolat s'mores - yummy and of course, Sarah's cauldron of sweets to keep dancers recharged with sugar between dance breaks. Yet besides the music, Nocturna also features local artisans from Lunasol Arts (<a href="http://www.lunasolarts.com">http://www.lunasolarts.com</a> and also on Facebook) displaying their fine handcrafted Goth jewelry, neck pieces and more for sale. Lots of pretty things to accessorize your Dark Shadows like this year, blogspot readers.<br /><br />SouthSide highly suggests spending a Saturday night with the local "vampires" of Nocturna at the next monthly meeting to dance until dawn.<br /><br /><br />Until next time, support your local scene,<br />SouthSideAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4886526953128809490.post-14860329304661430382014-01-25T15:36:00.000-08:002014-01-25T15:36:00.480-08:0027 Apr 12"...<i>who's that with the whistle? That's impressive</i>..."<br /><br /><br />Hey, blogspot readers, it's a rockin' Friday night to close out SouthSide's April calendar. Tonight, she's at the hip Northcenter area checking out the action and music inside Martyrs' where friend Derek Nelson and The Musicians were performing. <br /><br />And what a rockin' hoedown-like performance did this Americana/folk rock band did in front of a near sell-out crowd. Derek Nelson and his band gave their fans (as well as new fans) something to get happy throughout the the set featuring hot electric violin rhtyhms and guitar riffs (including a lap steel guitar), eclectic upbeat tempos and a dynamic vocal combination that melted the mic. After opening with American, this local group of musicians began the task of keeping everyone within that groovy music feeling under such lively rhythms and beats to get your body swaying to the Americana/folk sound. There was no avoiding it either, blogspot readers. The energy felt (especially during songs This Time) kept many enjoying the uplifting vibe yet while performing Storm, SouthSide literally felt the sensation of a coming thunderstorm from the way the music and sound personified it. She could feel the static electricity heating up as the music crescendo to the point when it suddenly (and unexpectedly) meshes and clashes together like a hard summer rainstorm ...complete with tornado winds and more. <br /><br />During another particular song, the crowd was rocked to the organic vibe of country/folk featuring a mandolin inside the fun tempo to which Derek Nelson and the band began a mini jamboree on stage. SouthSide highly suggests checking out the soulful yet gospel-like vibe of Darlin that truly had folks around this reviewer dancing up a storm. To her it was the highlight of their performance due to the band's ability to pop out of their "normal" mold exciting the crowd with vibrant energy musicially and vocally with a fiery spirit to bring the lyrics to life. Still there were a couple of moments within Derek's show where you could see as well as hear the heartfelt emotions pouring from the lyrics, blogspot readers. In one particular song Sayanora, the vocals within this ballad tone allowed Derek and his dynamic falsetto shine amidst a slight upbeat tempo but it was during Jesus when he really showed off his vocal style. Though a little darker than the others, one could hear the emotional heartache and angst vividly expressed in his voice while sensing the tenderest of all his feelings. SouthSide enjoyed how his female vocalist counterpart besides matching his vocal style also complimented his dynamic energy and soulful sound as heard in songs Come and Wait and closing song Ghosts (where Derek and the band rocked out Martyrs').<br /><br />If you missed this hot performance, not to worry, blogspot readers. Derek Nelson and The Musicians will be rocking the stage again at The Hideout on May 11 for Machinegun Mojo's farewell show. Tonight, SouthSide’s doing more than just rockin’ out Lakeview’s local rock venue, Elbo Room ...she’s partying until closing time with Esh the Singer (WI), Astor Place Riot (KY) and The Last Chance Boyz (IN) on this chilly winter’s night. Though unable to rock out with this beer-drinking, girlfriend-stealing scumbag band aka The Last Chance Boyz (can find them on Facebook) from Michigan City, IN, this reviewer highly suggests checking out this lively bunch off rockers who did a very mean punk version of the Richie Valens classic La Bamba. Hopefully, these Boyz will return to Chicago for a full review and perhaps an interview, blogspot readers.</div><div style="font: normal normal normal 16px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/8423675769/" title="Photo0592 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo0592" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8237/8423675769_beb8476223_m.jpg" width="240" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/8423672515/" title="Photo0599 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo0599" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8075/8423672515_986826acb0_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">The Astor Place Riot</span></div><br /></div><div style="font: normal normal normal 16px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">Upon her arrival, SouthSide was automatically mesmerized by the symphonically pleasing sound of a uniquely blended mesh of music genres. It wouldn’t be fair to this band from Lexington, KY – Astor Place Riot in describing how awe-inspiring the music felt or how wondrous the floetry surrounded this reviewer as it drifted across the stage during their performance ...unless you were personally there yourself, blogspot readers. To say it was an amazingly good set would be a gross understatement especially to way this band blended the edginess of symphonic rock with some dreampop, shoegaze and piano-driven sound and dynamic vocals (by front man and guitarist Josh) here and there that made the basement lounge vibrantly pop to life. Sure this reviewer could compare this band to another popular and/or local band she knows but for the sake of Astor’s review, they’ll be spared that since she got the general feeling they want their music to stand on its own merit. And it did. During one particular song, her ears were lost within the energizing pop of the symphonic sound that she briefly forgot how it highlighted the heartfelt sentiments sung by Josh before flipping the script for a more alternative/rock sound and less symphonic while keeping an electrifying tone in the music of the song that followed. SouthSide highly suggests mellowing out when Astor cranks up the intense volume while they perform long instrumental bridges to which the fiery spirited sound excited this audience and fans who demanded for more. Snag Astor Place Riot’s current release Crossing Lines that features songs likes 2 Against 3, All In, Prevail and In Too Close – this particular song truly brought out Josh’s falsetto vocals as well as the band’s intense crescendo music rise at the instrumental bridge. SouthSide enjoyed the natural floetry from the unique combination of Jasmine’s voice and the electric guitar (used as an electronic sitar) when she sang a couple of traditional songs. Then, it was time for something a little different from Esh (the Singer), blogspot readers. Tonight for her Elbo Room debut, this dynamic rock artist without her full band took the intimate, acoustic route to which thoroughly impressed and wowed not only this reviewer but also the Elbo Room regulars and management. Compared to when SouthSide first heard and met this artist, she enjoyed change of pace that featured a much more dynamic stage and vocal presence out of Esh in which her voice vividly brought each song to life with energizing fire and spirit. And so what if she flubbed on her favorite song (Rolling Stones’ Paint It Black), it was still cool to know she has moments when the famous words can escape her grasp but can still rockin’ it out for her fans while attracting the new listeners who came up from the basement lounge.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/8424731628/" title="Photo0624 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo0624" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8511/8424731628_b699c5d292_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div></div><div style="font: normal normal normal 16px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: normal normal normal 16px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: justify;">Esh is more than just a dynamic female vocalist, blogspot readers. She has a special unique talent of conjuring strong female emotions and then translating them through her choice of songs whether they be her own originals or covers. From the Elbo Room regulars and management, they compared her to Stevie Nicks because of her deep, classically trained vocal style. It has gritty edge in which you’re made to feel her voice permeating through your soul not just sitting there in your chair listening to it. For example, she soulfully drenched the ears with her powerful rendition of No Doubt’s Don’t Speak to which Nick (on electric guitar) took a much slower tempo pace to allow Esh’s vocals to be dynamic and strong while Chico as her male backing vocal added a touch of gentleness. Or check out her version of Radiohead’s All I Need – one of many “wow” moments that SouthSide had to stop writing and just be in awe of this artist’s voice as she emotionally pumped all that she had into this particular song. She turned Chris Issak’s Wicked Games from an overplayed radio hit into something so sexually hot and intensely wicked within slower downtempo electric rhythm. Even while performing her original like You Should Know Me, it wasn’t only her voice doing the “speaking” in this song. Her body language was clearly voicing its presence too, blogspot readers, that she packed a powerful punch of fire and spirit into each word breathed over the mic. Check out her other songs like Toxic, I’m Doing Fine and Burn This Place Down and get ready to be wrapped inside a strong woman whose voice will take you on one heck of a emotional rollercoaster ride ...she will expose your ears to moments of deep heartache and intense anger through her songs. Created for those who simply enjoy more than dressing up in dark fashionable wear, Nocturna is more like a social community where one can dance as well as hang out with friends (or make new friends) or people watch til dawn to a solid yet unique playlit of music created by members of Nocturna. <br /><br />Tonight at Metro, SouthSide and her guests along with many others turned this popular Wrigleyville venue into a hip underground club for its special event that featured a raffled giveaway - 5 pairs of Ministry tickets to see them live on Jun 28th at Vic Theatre. Plus GlitterGuts was on hand snapping away at the dancers or at their photo booth to capture how eleborately dressed the Nocturna members looked. And what truly makes this event special, blogspot readers - it's an environment where there's no judgement or prejudice amongst the attendess ...not towards how you're dressed or dancing. Everyone is made to feel welcome and safe especially by Sarah and William. Besides the music and community gathering of friendship, Nocturna is all about supporting local business and artists too, blogspot readers. This month's local business was Do Bats Eat Cats (<a href="http://dobatseatcats.etsy.com">http://dobatseatcats.etsy.com</a>) which featured the latest fashionable jewelry and more to accessorize your dark Goth look. SouthSide highly suggests checking out the lovely skull dangle earrings to neckpieces on the website.<br /><br />Nocturna always features the best in what's current and new from underground and/or indie / alternative artists. So don't expect to hear any big named pop star on the dance floor, blogspot readers, but you might hear Ministry ...or Depeche Mode to Ladytron (like Destroy Everything You Touch - SouthSide's latest "that song is stuck in my head" of the month) and Frontline Assembly to entice you to show off your fancy footwork on the dance floor. This months's playlist (as hard as Sarah tried to accommodate everyone's request) featured a rather interesting spectrum of songs some of which SouthSide hasn't heard since her youth - like Siouxsie & the Banshees- Peek a Boo, The Cure- In Between Days, Peter Murphy- I'll Fall With Your Knife, and David Bowie- Scary Monsters. Yet she did enjoy others played during the night such as BlutEngel- Über den Horitzon, Helium Vola- Omnis Mundi Creatura, Crystal Castles- Not in Love (feat. Robert Smith), My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult- A Daisy Chain 4 Satan and many many more. Sarah usually via member requests taps into her HUGE playlist of shoegaze, ethereal, post-punk, new wave, darkwave and beyond to keep Nocturna dancers on the floor until dawn (around 5a). But do pace yourself. If you're running low on sugar, Sarah has a cool cauldron of candy sweets handy on stage by her DJ booth.<br /><br />And you don't have to be a "professional" dancer to rock the dance floor, blogspot readers. Create your own steps as the floetry of any particular or favorite song moves you. Or simply watch the others showing off their fancy footwork ...you might even catch SouthSide dancing like she did on Saturday to Depeche Mode's Personal Jesus or Ashbury Heights- I Can Kill You So Easily. However, if dancing's really not your "thing", try people watching, blogspot readers. SouthSide does it when resting between a group of songs. It's fun watching the parade of fashion on display whether happening on the dance floor or moving around Metro because you never know what will appear on a given month perhaps a Villain or VVasher (woman). Last month, someone was fashionably dressed as a dashing pirate ...another month, this reviewer was entranced by the mysterious Phantom and his seductive dance movements. This month was no different. Many, dressing to impress themselves and not others, spared no expense with their clothes ...one came in a lovely corsetted dress ...a few others were in their post-industrial look complete with gas masks. Yes, blogspot readers, fashion is whatever you make of it for Nocturna. The fashion reflects the style and/or who you want to represent which is truly the beauty of Nocturna. You're free to be who (or dress) what you want to be.<br /><br />It was an exceptional turnout for this month's Nocturna "meeting", blogspot readers. The dance floor was at a constant state of movement with fashionable people having a great time amidst the hot playlist of songs keeping them there. Yet don't fret if you missed this Nocturna. There's other offshoots you can attend like Nocturnica (dark underground electronica version of Nocturna), Back to the Grave and The Lonely Tarts Club. If you live and/or around Chicago, join the Nocturna Chicago Facebook Group to get information about and pertaining to the American Gothic Productions club event, Nocturna as well as meeting other members.<br /><br /><br />Until next time, support your local scene,<br />SouthSideAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4886526953128809490.post-7873620462203681072014-01-21T15:43:00.000-08:002014-01-21T15:43:00.068-08:0001 May 12 - Elbo Room Booking InfoHey, blogspot readers and band/artists/musicians, this information was given to SouthSide if you're wondering about the booking policies at Elbo Room. <br /><br />Read very carefully...and have a good show!<br /><br />Booking at Elbo Room…<br /><br />[COCKTAIL LOUNGE BOOKING]<br /> If you are an ACOUSTIC SOLO ACT, ACOUSTIC DUO, ACOUSTIC BAND with no<br />drumset (aux percussion is fine)… please contact KAYLA as she<br />handles all the bookings for this genre and our cocktail lounge. It's so hot that SouthSide's cooling off by rockin' to music performances during this special On The Town adventure. Tonight, she's hanging out at Wicker Park's hippest rock venue - Double Door for a pre-Pitchfork party featuring three amazing acts currently on tour presented by Conflict of Interest. Music fans crowded the main floor to see ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and UME (both from Austin, Texas) with The Red Paintings (Australia) opening the show. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This reviewer thoroughly enjoyed the sights and sounds of The Red Paintings which combined a rather semi-acoustic music set coupled with two artists creating art on stage with the duo musicians. What truly made this performance very interesting to review was the elaborate costumes worn on stage which was a bit shocking especially after a record-breaking temperatures. She wishes that she had pictures to show the anime-inspired wear complete with a Russian hat and coat and kimonos adorning the two. The opening act itself could be described as intense and eclectic while having a vibrant folk music amidst such beautiful melodic rhythms even when performing a song about young woman who committed suicide leaving behind a young child. The highlight of Red's show came at two points, blogspot readers. The first happened during a powerful rendition of a rarely covered Nirvana song You Know You're Right that demonstrated a fine display of vocal emotions on the lyrics not only popping in the ears but smacking the music right into your face with such intense acoustic sound. The second happened at the conclusion of Red's performance when the electric was tuned up at the beginning of The Revolution Is Never Coming in which was the most powerful display of fiery emotions and frustrations ever witnessed by SouthSide. She enjoyed the political overtones heard within the lyrics that everyone inside the Double Door could feel the venomous heat dripping from Trash's lips as he spewed "...your revolution is never coming..." Wow...so intense and so true, blogspot readers. SouthSide suggests checking out this band. For more information about The Red Paintings, visit <a href="http://www.theredpaintings.com/">http://www.theredpaintings.com</a> for fall tour dates with Mindless Self Indulgence.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Are you ready to rock, blogspot readers? SouthSide means ...are you REALLY ready to rock with this next band from Austin, TX? Are you ready to do more than headbang to wild, intense electric guitar-driven punk rock with this band known as UME? And wow - did this hardcore trio ever blow this reviewer's (and everyone else in the vicinity) ears away! They had this crowd feeling as well as reeling within the full blast of hard-hitting electric riffs throughout their performance full of that gritty Southern rock sound. Even while taking the energetic momentum down for a moment, UME still kept that intense electric charge going though it was also the moment when Lauren's (the band's female lead on guitar) microphone needed to be upped a little. This reviewer was totally grooving to the crazy floetry off the harsh chords that sometimes might be a bit jarring on the eardrums (if you don't have earplugs like this reviewer) but that's how this bands rocks, blogspot readers. Don't expect this band to slow down either. It got brutally rough ...and that was a good thing. Each song had that "in the your face wham bam thank you, ma'am" type of rock coupled with Lauren's vocals on lyrics. She might fool you with that soft voice however you'll be amazed on how raspy and dynamic as well as soulful she can be a lead vocalist adding lots of steamy sex appeal most times. Yet watch out, fellas, she can rock harder than most of you especially when she hits that moment within an instrumental bridge or jam - she really lets her hair fly all around while making her guitar "sing" and wail with such energy. Ending on a high note, UME was one of the most exciting rock bands SouthSide has seen so far and suggests checking out this band at their next show. For more information about UME, visit <a href="http://www.umemusic.com/">http://www.umemusic.com</a>.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Now it was really time to rock out, blogspot readers! To the sound of joyous cheers and thunderous applause, Austin, Tx band And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead stepped onto the stage ready to blast us away with intense yet melodic guitar rock. One thing you can definitely say about this band (besides the long name which accompanies it) is its core sound was designed to be epic dazzling the senses with rhythmic chords and dramatic crescendoing buildup throughout the instrumental bridges before returning the song's original tempo. Yes, the music was almost like an orchestrated composition and very expressive to the bone which also highlighted the front man's vocals on lyrics. And believe it or not, blogspot readers, this was merely the prelude of more great things to come from And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead. For this reviewer it was the melodic sound that instantly grabbed her attention. She enjoyed how each guitarist played the riffs with a vigorous fervor and such intensity while creating beautiful rock music in between the harsh floetry and tempo pace. To say, SouthSide awestruck would be a gross understatement and it would be somewhat difficult to describe the energetic momentum that flowed within this venue. Midway thru the performance, And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead debuted songs newly recorded when they were in Hanover, Germany which demonstrated a stark contrast in music style than what was heard at the beginning of the performance. Instead of the melodic sound and rhythms, the new songs demonstrated the band's progression into hardcore rock intensity with gritty guitar riffs and raw vocal angst on the lyrics. Now this stage along with the crowd was totally on fire, blogspot readers! Fueled by the cheers, the intensity grew by the minute as show became wilder and crazier ...not one inch of the stage was left untouched though the crowd (especially where SouthSide stood) was somewhat restrained. Yet that doesn't mean they weren't enjoying the intense rock performance. And though the melodic side to this band was not really present within their hardcore side, you can still hear and feel the epic crescendoing rise and dramatic smack of sound was there to leave you breathless and wanting more. This was SouthSide's first time reviewing a band like And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead performing under such "grueling" pressure - which isn't a bad thing to do since it did keep the many fans attending this show very excited and caught up within the momentum. It was certainly the wow factor for them each time the guitars wailed to its gritty sound or the drums thundered out its rhythms until the end. Overall, blogspot readers, this reviewer recommends checking out this band live up close and personal at their next show and be prepared to have all five senses blown away when they're finished rockin' the stage. Tonight, she's visiting a new sports bar that just opened featuring a familiar face for some beer and football (just kidding on the beer part) And, OH MY GOSH - Brian "B-Rock Da Fender" Bender (former Hot Sauce Committee, The Branded, A Birdsong Valentine member) actually wearing a real button down shirt too! It was scary seeing him all grown up and business-like as General Manager, blogspot readers. This reviewer recommends checking out this new neighborhood bar . And you really can't miss it because it's the only establishment without an outdoor sign<em>*</em> announcing its name but so far that gimmick seems be working because when SouthSide arrived around 10p Thursday night, the place was jumping. That's very good for a cool pre-Autumn night too, blogspot readers. Fatpour Tap Works seemed to be the place for watching New York Giants trounce on Carolina Panthers or simply hanging out with friends after a long day at the office. It was quite a scene for a pre-weekend day.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">On the outside, this bi-level building establishment looks rather small even with an outdoor patio area (there are heated warmers to keep the chill off you). Yet looks can be quite deceiving, blogspot readers, until you're inside Fatpour itself. The every inch of this bar space (on the first and second floor) is put to good use ...there's plenty of seating at the bars on both floors but if you're with friends - check out the booths which have the taps on the table ready to pour your favorite beer. There are also table seating for four and SouthSide highly suggests sitting close to the enclosed keg room ...great spot for people watching and checking out the kegs and kitchen area. Also sports fans, you're never without a view of the game and/or highlights since you're surrounded with flat screens. And if the keg room wasn't where it's located, you would easily have a perfect 360 degree view of each screen on both floors. Tonight, this reviewer was a little daring and decided to sample Fatpour's sangria. The verdict? Nice, cool and refreshing with a powerful kick from the alcohol. Making his rounds as General Manager, Brian disclosed to SouthSide that Fatpour has 150 bottles/cans of beer as well as 50 kegs inside the keg room. Looking at the menu, he pointed out that each beer/wine etc is arranged by style ie - Wheat to Pilsners/Lagers and Ales (both pale and amber) ...even Belgian too! Plus they have ciders, stouts and wines (reds, whites and sparkling). Brian highly recommends sampling Fatpour's Fish Bowl which comes with a sparklers. Maybe ...during SouthSide's birthday next year.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">After ordering her drink, SouthSide had the difficult task wondering what to eat! The food selection was vast and offered a wide variety of yummy eats from starters to sides and soups and then the entrees. That's where her server - Lauren, assisted this reviewer in what to choose from the menu. The first thing that caught her eye was BBQ chicken wings and she wasn't disappointed by her choice either. In fact, SouthSide had to remove her rings off her left hand. They were that lip-smacking smothered within the tangy sauce with the right amount of kick in the after taste at the back of your throat ...the sauce you could smell even before the plate arrived to the table. And the sauce wasn't store bought either - homemade from scratch kind of sauce (great on the veggies too). The wings were cooked just the way she likes them - crispy skin on the outside and moist and tender meat in the inside. Lauren suggested she try Fatpour's mac-n-cheese ...and guess what, blogspot readers, it's simply to die for. The small portion this reviewer tried tasted as if her own mom was in the kitchen making it ...melt in your mouth taste from the creamy cheese sauce over the noodles. In a nutshell, SouthSide was in food heaven tonight. And lastly before the kitchen closed for the night, this reviewer tried the "create your own pizza" selection even though Brian highly recommends his favorite - Notorious B.I.G. - this monster of a pizza features bacon, pork butt, prosciutto, pepperoni, sausage, onion, and tomato sauce. The basic "guy" food groups prepared on this pie. However, SouthSide opted for her own creation pepperoni, sausage, tomato sauce, and mozzarella cheese (she did ask for black olives but they didn't have that item). She enjoyed the fresh dough crust cooked nicely for a crispy bottom and chewy taste with the toppings. After taking leftover pizza home, there was none for SouthSide since the pizza goblin had it for breakfast before school the next day.<br /><br />Other menu options, blogspot readers, include Grilled Lamb (quite upscale entree item for a neighborhood sports bar but will have to sample the next time she returns) and Pork Chops as well as sandwiches such as Pulled Pork and Mango Chicken Salad and sides from fresh fruit to sweet fries, tots and more. And if you have any room left in your stomach, there's also a dessert list for you - Framboise Float, Skillet Cookie and Caramelized Plantains to entice your sweet tooth. On weekends (Saturdays and Sundays only), Fatpour has a brunch menu featuring items like Stuffed French Toast and Chi-town Skillet to other tasty entrees from 11a to 3p. Then, there's the daily specials to whet your after work appetite, blogspot readers. On Mondays, it's Fat Day, Tuesdays - $2 Tacos and $3 Mexican beers, Wednesdays - $4 select 12oz bottles, Thursdays - it was "skinny" Day and Fridays - from 3p to 6p, it's 1/2 off appetitizers, $20 Fish Bowls and $5 PBR and select shots. During the weekend, the Fatpour specials are $7 Bloody Mary and Mimosa bar and $5 Beermosas and of course, brunch. Be sure to say "hi" to Lauren and tip her well as well as the hardworking Fatpour staff, bartenders, and servers. From what SouthSide on Thursday, Brian and the co-owners hired a a solid team of people including the chef and kitchen staff (from which you can watch them working on your food orders too). <br /><br />As far as sports goes at Fatpour - unofficially it's a Chicago sports bar in which they support ALL Chicago teams including the 1st place White Sox (kinda rare on the Northside). According to Brian, officially the bar is a University of Wisconsin, (the hated) Green Bay Parkers and Phladelphia Eagles bar, blogspot readers.<br /><br />The verdict: overall, SouthSide's not really a barfly but she wouldn't mind going to Fatpour Tap Works to hang out with friends and/or bands after a show or day at the other "office". She was thoroughly surprised how much serious thought went into this establishment ...it's in a prime Division Street location to capture the bustling Wicker Pack/Westown/Bucktown/Ukrainian Village night life and scene (especially during the weekends). It's an upscale but not too much make it be or have that River North bar atmosphere - more like a regular Joe and Jane to meet, hook up, and dine within moderately priced food items. This reviewer loved the friendly hip charm which attracts a wide range of genders, sports fans, races, and age demographics without the drunken college kid appeal. Plus, on Fridays and Saturdays - check out the live DJ spinning current pop hits and mixes upstairs.<br /><br />For more information about this establishment, visit <a href="http://www.fatpourchicago.com/">http://www.fatpourchicago.com</a>.<br /><br /><br />Until next time, support your local bar scene, <br />SouthSide<br /><br /><br /><br />*<em>currently there's a sign now</em></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4886526953128809490.post-86851102044013819132014-01-13T19:42:00.000-08:002014-01-13T19:42:00.116-08:0025 Aug 12 - I AM Fest 2012<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">Once a year, fans, artisans and musicians are brought together under one roof for a special, one of a kind all day festival known as I AM Fest, blogspot readers. Started over three years by 9 founding band members of the Chicago Noise Machine, this locally produced fest has grown by leaps and bounds featuring many artisans within photography and waterworks to jewelry craftsman as well as bands of differing genres rockin' the stage at the legendary House of Blues. Every year, there's always something new and exciting happening during I AM Fest, blogspot readers, so this year Southside decided to take a unique approach in covering this annual event. This reviewer came only prepared with her infamous notepad and pen and an open mind about each of the ten bands performing though already knowing and/or previously reviewed half of the lineup. The goal was to attend I AM Fest with a fresh set of eyes (and ears) as if she had never heard or attended an event like this before. Also she asked random people at I AM Fest from artists and musicians to fans and those behind the scenes in putting together this fest for their thoughts and opinions about the day's event.<br /><div style="text-align: center;"></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Kicking off this year's rockin' Independent Arts and Music Fest(ival) or I AM Fest for short was the winners of this year's Battle of the Bands - The Studs and The Giving Moon. Both bands, blogspot readers, thoroughly not set the pace and mood of the festival as well as its lineup but also got the festgoers pumped and ready to rock out all afternoon long. To say they had hot performances would be an understatement, blogspot readers - those two bands gave the other acts a run for their money by fueling the audience with electrifying , intense energy within their music and sound. So far, I AM Fest was off to a good start. Next to perform on stage was <strong>The Underlined</strong> - an ecelectic mix of classical with acoustic Americana/folk music during their first appearance as a band on stage. SouthSide did like their unique vaudeville-esque style and sound however the set lacked that burst of energy felt at the beginning of the show, blogspot readers. Still, this was a welcome change compared to the steady stream of rock usually heard at I AM Fest. This reviewer highly suggests listening to the following by The Underlined - Knots and Midwestern Sky. Then afterwards, <strong>Cobalt & The Hired Guns</strong> took the stage exploding with a burst of energy and momentum within the band's urban pop folk/alternative sound though at first the bass cellist did have a hard time keeping up to the fast paced tempo during the opening song. Yet when the tempo dropped to something a little steadier as well as livelier, Cobalt's unique mesh of blend genres produced an rockin' sound. One of SouthSide's guests commented that band reminded him of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones heard from Cobalt's peppy list of songs performed. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Continuing with the theme of explosive energy and music, <strong>The Alaya Conscious</strong> blew everyone's minds (and ears) with melodic rhythms within the band's guitar rock especially while opening with the song White Noise. SouthSide definitely could feel the flow of momentum surrounding the House of Blues during the chorus and instrumental bridge where the blending mesh of hardcore guitar riffs and flowing melodies merged into one heart-pounding, head banging metal experience. Featuring new material especially for I AM Fest 2012 like Throat and Grace, fans will enjoy feeling (besides hearing) the intensity to which this trio performs under from beginning to end amidst a complexity of electric riffs to draw out the epic composition of each song. Also halfway through this event when <strong>A Friend Called Fire</strong> electrified the stage with their opening song, The Lightning. This opening song not only fuel the audience's energy throughout the set but also the band's as they rocked this legendary venue with an explosive bang when Jon strummed the guitar on his knees to close out the performance. This act truly had rock fans excited for more bands as the stage was now set for <strong>Board of Governors</strong>. Voted as having the "Best Hair" in Chicago, last year's I AM Fest openers were poised and ready to turn up the heat as well as electricity with their electrifying guitar rock sound. And this band, blogspot readers, did not disappoint their fans who were screaming and rockin' out along with this trio. There was excitement for the intense riffs and percussion rhythms flowing throughout the main floor ..but watch out for Board's chord changes too -not only will it increase the band's music intensity but also your rock experience even while the hair is flying around the stage. Check out Homo Sapien though taking the energy down a bit there remains life and momentum to keep you rockin or Slow Down yet you don't want to not after listening to this particular song.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"> Next representing the singer/songwriter genre of I AM Fest was <strong>Leah Druzinsky</strong> and her band in which she brought her soulful and dynamic voice to the House of Blues crowd though there were times when she was overshadowed by the band. Yet she did give these fans a powerful display of her vocal powress and emotional emphasis as well as a taste of her sweet seductive side as a sultry temptress during a couple of songs that lit the stage on fire. SouthSide noted the crowd's enthusiastic reaction throughout her performance while they grooved to her soulful style and sound especially when the band jammed instrumentally which was a good lead-in for the next performance. Now, it was time to sweat and rock out with <strong>Workout Music</strong>. blogsot readers! This local band best known for their wacky antics on stage while entertaining an audience with a few surprises besides performing their hit songs like Don't Stop Now, Drop Them Drawers, and SouthSide's fave - Ain't My Jeans. Last year's I AM Fest, they cluttered the House of Blues stage with confetti. Well, this year - it was messy mixture of bubbles, confetti, streamers, and beach balls everywhere on the main floor. You should have seen the area AFTER the event was over ...what a clean up job for the staff and crew! Viewing part of this set from backstage, the guys definitely were ready to party like last year. Then closing out I AM Fest but also following with Workout Music's crazy lead was <strong>The Energy Commission</strong>. Featuring an artist creating a portrait during their performance, this band also had other surprises for their fans like dancers to liven up certain songs (ie We Got Game and We're Strugglin') to kick balls and pom poms being tossed into the crowd. SouthSide enjoyed how this group rocked the stage with a variety of genres from hip hop fusion to rocl alternative with such exuberant energy and stage showmanship, blogspot readers. They had this crowd on hyperdrive from start to finish as they rocked out I AM Fest 2012 with a bang!</div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Throughout the event, blogspot readers, SouthSide sampled a random select group of people for their thoughts and comments about I AM Fest 2012. Tracy, for example, has been a staunch supporter of the local music scene as a fan and now as a crafts participant within this year's event. She stated "...<em>it's great supporting each other and other artists</em>..." while Mr. Agitator (of V Is For Villains) said "...<em>Brian Bender (co-founder of I AM Fest) will always be my girlfriend</em>..." Memebers of Board of Governors were excited to see The Alaya Conscious perform as well as the other bands in the lineup too. Wags (of Red City) expressed that I AM Fest is "...<em>an opportunity for local musicians to express themselves on the stage that they deserve</em>..." Sarah, Wag's sister and first time I AM Fest-goer had this to say "...<em>I love it ...live music is the best thing in the world</em>..." Other comments ranged from "...<em>more of a sense of pride in music [within] Chicago's music scene</em>..." from Leonard (of We Killed The Lion) to "...<em>a kind culmination of things that Elbo Room does for Chicago's local scene and bands ...something like this is awesome</em>..." - Dave (of The Alaya Conscious). Adam (of A Friend Called Fire) had this to say when asked for his thoughts "...<em>seeing the bands come together is refreshing regardless of genre and the people ...every band that's here should be playing for them [the crowd] like this every night ...definitely an experience</em>..." while bandmate Jon stated this "...<em>it's nice sitting in a room with people some we know and other we don't without the bullshit</em>..." Memebers of Workout Music excitedly had this to say "...<em>I AM Fest is an opportunity that Tim and I have been waiting for since the age of 14 years old</em>..." and "...<em>an opportunity to play at House of Blues, I'm glad [I AM Fest] exists</em>..." Finally but never least, Matt summed up the entire I AM Fest experience with this, blogspot readers, <em>"...the openers earned their spots on stage [tonight] and watching the progression of bands [on the lineup] was amazing ...and Workout Music - partying like there's no tomorrow</em>..." which was followed by "...<em>I AM Fest builds such community and friendships amongst the bands where they will be doing shows together at other venues ...it's amazing watching everything as it happens</em>..." Nicely put but it was also time to "...<em>trainwreck</em>..." the after party!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">What a day!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">What a fest, blogspot readers!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Until next time, support your local scene,</div><div style="text-align: justify;">SouthSide</div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4886526953128809490.post-62836677942321469752014-01-13T02:13:00.000-08:002014-01-13T02:13:00.806-08:00One On One with Sid Yiddish<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /><div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/8146676260/" title="Photo0258 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo0258" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8470/8146676260_eeef075c26_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">Sid Yiddish – the local scene’s mysterious throat warbler ...a former America Got Talent contestant ...Denmark’s favorite non-Dane celebrity ...leader of his Candy Store Henchmen band ...and now. a “Ludacris video extra turned college grad student”. Yes, blogspot readers, you read correctly. Sid Yiddish, that man of mystery sometimes dressed his infamous Jewish costume for shows, was part of the Ludacris video for “Jingalin’” over the summer. And spotting Sid in it won’t be too hard either ...he’s the only non-practicing Orthodox Jew hanging out with the ladies. After a long busy summer and beginning of fall, SouthSide was finally able to snag a few moments with the space alien from Saturn, Texas in his “office” at Columbia College recently to chat about what’s new within his universe to how he landed that role in Ludacris’ video and more.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">After settling into his underground lair, SouthSide began the interview with Sid’s description of himself today compared to a year ago within five (5) words or less. According to him “...no comparison...” but he kindly added “...<i>educational adventurous inspiring innovative tuqueish</i>...” <i>Tuqueish</i>, blogspot readers, was Sid’s new word of the day. So what evil plots or schemes does an “...educational adventurous inspiring innovative tuqueish...” have planned for unsuspecting earthlings? Well, he’s learning how to use the universe then he’ll eventually teach his method to others ...as well as “...<i>take over the solar system then [the] universe ...maybe the world</i>...” IF it’s still here after 21 Dec 2012. So what’s new and happening in Sid’s world, you might wonder, blogspot readers. Believe it or not, this former AGT contestant has a publicist! Recently, he met with the “team” who will be handling everything which includes getting “...<i>gigs and world wide fame</i>...” This package also includes putting together a Wikipedia page that might have a mention (or two) of SouthSide. Don’t believe any of the rumors about Sid and her doing a waltz across Wabash towards State St, blogspot readers. Even though he couldn’t say (“...<i>hush hush</i>...” says Sid), the “team” is currently working on some stuff for the upcoming holiday season.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/8146678176/" title="Photo0260 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo0260" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8193/8146678176_5f3e222c8a_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">In his weird Furby voiceover for SouthSide’s daughter as entertainment. Sid briefly relayed the story on how Lee Klawans of Dr. Evil Publicity (<span style="color: #3a00ff; text-decoration: underline;">http://www.DrEvilPub.com</span>) approached this local space alien and take him on as their very first client. So far, he has met an entertainment attorney, social media person and many others who are hard at work on his image and future gigs. At Columbia College, Sid is listed as a First Year Interdisciplinary Media & Arts Immediary grad student under its three (3) year program in which he loves. Funny thing is, blogspot readers, he’s not the only Sid in class. He also added that his advisor (for the year) is Paul Catanese and “...<i>[the] teachers are great</i>...” He had done three (3) presentations that two had featured The Henchmen performing in classroom with him. As you can imagine, it did attract curious onlookers on those particular days. “...<i>[we] did a parody of Mack The Knife as Stake The Knife</i>...” that showed off Sid’s patented hand movements to direct the band. Also, he did another one titled Ninety Minute Delay on the Eisenhower. Then recently, he got a little dicey with a “blue” film called Blinded By Masturbation (in which has received over 70 views thus far on YouTube, blogspot readers). Briefly, Sid told SouthSide the censored story of how he caught his female Terrier, Nutters, doing the act (while using her tail) ...and believe it or not, the dog’s fixed. Sid does have respect when it comes to underage kids in the room and did his best to control his language.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">Yet, it doesn’t stop there, blogspot readers. Sid has been busy doing things with MultiKulti like Fractulation where in one part he’s plunging to earth and PSAs Volume I 2011 – 2012 (came out over a month ago) that features another SouthSide friend, General Patton. Besides that, Sid has been busy with new releases such as Sid Yiddish Live @ Mr. Earl’s Funhouse (it’s a short run – 31 copies under the label, Human Burial Records (located in Kenosha, WI) ...sometime next year, there’s Covered Wagons (under the Trash Fuck Records), Stentor Radio Interview (a 2010 interview with Denmark’s Clean Boys) and then off Placenta Recordings (located in MI), Danish Viking Astronaut. Here’s what Sid had to say about that “...<i>they approached me ...wanted to record me if you can believe that</i>...” PLUS, there will be a box set of Sid Yiddish, blogspot readers! It will feature early Sid (before Sid became the Sid Yiddish we know today) dated from 1979 to 1999 (Vol. 1) and 1999 to 2009 (Vol. 2) “...<i>who does this?!</i>” Sid excitedly exclaimed. And like the Sid Yiddish Live CD, this box set will be limited-run too. That’s not all, Sid fans! Sid Yiddish and his Candy Store Henchmen have a new album titled – Leather Strawberries Live On WZRD (according to Sid the title has nothing to do with sex ...it’s about fruit rollups). He thought it was a great title since aliens like him (especially those from Saturn, Texas) eat and LOVE Hello Kitty Fruit Snacks. “...<i>[It] gives you energy to zap more people</i>...”</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">And, we’re still NOT done, blogspot readers. In the meanwhile, Sid’s working on a return trip to Denmark for the Summer where he’ll be part of a book project of translated Danish poetry. The exchange program will include 3 to 5 dates here as well as there but Sid hopes his extremely busy schedule will allow it. There’s another project in which Sid posed for a photographer/artist, Ed Patterson as the biblical figure, Abraham sacrificing Issac for a church located in Greenwood, IN. The photographs were taken at Indiana Dunes and here’s another interesting fact, blogspot readers, Jason “Evil” Covelli (of Human Burial Records) portrayed Noah. “...<i>hopefully I’m able to attend the opening [happening sometime in Spring of 2013] ...will start a Kickstarter program to go</i>...” And if that’s not enough Sid Yiddish news you can use, there’s more. He was an extra (an spectator) in a 17th Century period piece about Daniel Mendoza, the first Jewish world champ boxer when he beat Sam Martin, the Bath Butcher ...according to UK Boxing History, King George III was a fan of Menoza. On Oct 6th, one of Sid’s cover songs, Man Titties, was aired on the Dr. Demento Show, blogspot readers. Then with Torque Monks, Sid hopefully will have the album Behold The Pale Monk, Healthy Poison and Live @ Solarium De Luna released sometime in 2013. As if that’s not enough, he also has more compilations that were TOO many to name during this interview. However, expect to see Sid Yiddish somewhere ...anywhere and/or everything next year.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: normal normal normal 12px/normal 'Times New Roman'; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/8146644611/" title="Photo0259 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img alt="Photo0259" height="180" src="http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8466/8146644611_2463600a56_m.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">So how did Sid land a role in Ludacris’ hit video, Jingalin’ (and he LOVES saying that word, blogspot readers)? In his Ferbie voice again, he told SouthSide the brief version of this long, interesting story. About eight (8) months ago, Sid sent out emails to land various gigs until a casting agent contacted wondering if he wanted to come down to Atlanta for a video shoot. At first, he declined the offer but his label, Aleatory Records flew him down. That’s when he found out why the famous rapper/hip hop artist Ludacris wanted him – “...<i>what Jew works on Sabbath [Saturday]?</i>” Plus, they thought he was a practicing Orthodox Jew. Sid did tell this reviewer that they did cut the one scene where he’s playing a dice game with the sheik which is almost a set for the “ a Jew, Sheik, etc enter a house party” type of joke, blogspot readers. He even showed her the actual dice that was used for the video ...a notable keepsake from his mark within hip hop/rap world. Yet, it wouldn’t be Sid Yiddish if he didn’t do a parody of Ludacris’ Jingalin parody where there’s an alternate version by Jew-dacris by MultiKulti. Despite Sid’s recent as well as future accomplishments, Sid Yiddish is quite humble. And that’s the honest truth, blogspot readers. “...<i>[It’s] gotten me open to more doors ...more coverage [including] more Facebook fans, gigs and records</i>...” Those who have recognized him (from the video) on the “L” (Chicago’s elevated public transit system) ask him “<i>How can I meet Ludacris?</i>”</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">With Sid’s enormous and busy schedule between recording, show appearances (sometimes with the other local masked man, Flabby Hoffman) and school, you might wonder how he can add one more on top of what he has on his plate. He was part of the Great Fire & Traveling Truck Show in which he and others traveled around town as sideshow acts (an homage to the traveling sideshow acts of the early 19th Century) performing feats of amazement and more. Sid told her it contained a bunch of actors and actresses, a tarot card reader and also a bearded bee lady to entertain the audience. Sid, though trying his best to describe what his performance was, told this reviewer that he does something with banjos ...something that’s never been done before at a Sid Yiddish show. SouthSide wished she could have attended the final show (held in Pilsen) since ABC’s 190 North (a local news/entertainment program) was going to be there to film.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">Before ending this interview, Sid did reveal that he’ll be an election judge for the upcoming Presidential election and his considering a spec for a commercial (he let SouthSide see the email ...sorry, blogspot readers, she can’t reveal that secretive tidbit to you.) Also, coming soon on the internet – <span style="color: #3a00ff; text-decoration: underline;">http://www.SidYiddish.org</span> and despite currently under construction, there are photos of Sid on there. PLUS – he’s going back to the studio with Tom Repentry (of Monk 9) where they’re working on a parody of that popular song – PSY’s Gangnam Style.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">You can find Sid (as well as His Candy Store Henchmen) on Facebook, Myspace, Twitter, YouTube, etc.</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">Until next time, support your local scene,</div><div style="font: 12.0px 'Times New Roman'; margin: 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px 0.0px; text-align: justify;">SouthSide</div><div><br /></div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4886526953128809490.post-86107107678357206172014-01-12T16:53:00.000-08:002014-01-12T16:53:00.245-08:0020 July 12<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><br /><div style="font: 11px Arial; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">Hey, blogspot readers, let’s rock the weekend! SouthSide’s hitting the streets to cover two hot shows in one incredible Friday night. First, she’s checking out part of the action at Wrigleyville’s Goose Island Pub where her frieind, Andy Metz and his Meddlin’ Kids ...yet on this night, they weren’t meddling anymore. They’re now Hero Monster Zero! Don’t worry, blogspot readers, only the band name has changed ...not the eclectic, energizing mesh of hardcore guitar rock and lyrical hip hop. Though briefly there at Goose Island before having to leave, this reviewer enjoyed the intense performance of boisterous riffs and thundering pound of percussion rhythms. Even while taking that same momentous energy down a bit, there was still plenty of energy and life to be heard as well as felt especially within Andy’s (front man on guitar) vocal tone of angst and frustration. There were fun moments of experiencing a lively rockin’ jamboree or perhaps some rock/alternative when in a downtempo rhythm that pops with vibrant sound, blogspot readers, before getting into the lyrical groove of Hero’s fusion of hardcore guitar rock and hip hop/rap – both to which was executed nicely. It’s a fast pace type of Hero show whenever the band easily flows in and out of their eclectic mesh up to the delight of their fans who get to enjoy the best of both musical worlds (and then some). Sadly, SouthSie wished she could stay til the end of Hero Monster Zero’s debut performance but she had to make the mad dash across town to Schuba’s Tavern for Xoe Wise’s headlining CD release show. For more information, visit <a href="http://www.andymetz.com/">http://www.andymetz.com</a>.</div><div style="font: 11px Arial; margin: 0px; min-height: 12px; text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="font: 11px Arial; margin: 0px; text-align: justify;">Now at Schuba’s and rumor has it that Mayor Rahm’s in da house! Well, blogspot readers, that’s NO rumor ...Chicago’s mayor was in fact at Schuba’s enjoying the local lineup as well as snapping photos with tonight’s headliner, Xoe Wise, before her performance. This set, however, was completely different from the last time SouthSide saw this singer/songwirter. Tonight for her official CD release of <i>Archive of Illusions</i>, this artist performed not as a solo acoustic act but with a full band. This move definitely captured a different sound and feel of her music and vocals, blogspot reader, in front of this “standing room only” crowd. Comparing the intimacy felt and experienced when she’s performing as an acoustic singer/songwriter to what was seen tonight, this reviewer in her honest opinion sadly preferred Xoe as solo artist. Despite liking how vibrant and alive her music sounded with the full band backing her, her songs also lost the personal touch and feel from a songwriter that SouthSide enjoyed. It would have been better if there were more acoustic originals to highlight how dynamic her vocals could be yet she was sometimes overshadowed by the band. Case in point, her cover of Mazzy Star’s 90’s hit, Fade Into You. This reviewer liked Xoe’s take on this haunting melodic tune but she and her docile voice were seriously drowned out by the music as well as the idle chatter heard throughout the venue. The crowd chattering was so loud she wondered: a) how Xoe was able to hear herself sing and b) how the crowd could take notice that she was singing when no one was really paying attention to her and the band. The downtempo crawl of this particular cover song being sung as a ballad was a tad lifeless and too slow though popping with a few sparks of life at the instrumental bridge. SouthSide also wasn’t particularly “crazy” with Xoe’s other cover song performed earlier into the performance – the Blonde/Rick Springfield/Carly Rae Jespen mesh up featuring her friend Erin Walker joining her on stage. This reviewer tried her best to get into the lively switch from 80s pop to millennial pop done in a blink of an eye but it wasn’t doing anything musically for her to enjoy. Granted, SouthSide understands this was Xoe’s first performance with a full band but it was truly not her best. The CD release show though featuring lively country/folk alternative rhythms or heartfelt downtempo sound didn’t capture majority of the crowd’s attention and/or interest (SouthSide included) due to the minor miscues and song choices for her set. This reviewer still recommends seeing this singer/songwriter but as an acoustic artist only. Also, let it be known that she detests terrible, poorly scripted movies based on Greek mythology or legends and/or remakes (i.e. the remake of the 80's Clash Of The Titans). That being said, blogspot readers, SouthSide went to this movie screening without any high expectations that Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters would be a fairly decent sequel to its predecessor. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Okay, you have permission to throw stones at this reviewer for pre-judging the movie before actually sitting inside the theatre (with 3-D glasses) to review it.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Given the "quality" of this year's so-called summer blockbusters (so far) only two have been highly recommended by SouthSide ...one, btw, was a foreign film, blogspot readers. Oh before, she forgets - must EVERYTHING be in 3D or REAL 3 D (what's the difference, can someone explain that to her?)?! She understands it's a cash cow these days but it's becoming so annoying and pas se these days.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Anyway, blogspot readers, you have come to read a review about Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters not hear a rant about the difference between 3D and REAL 3D ...then again, this review will start to feel like a rant once you have finished. Let SouthSide explain. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">This sequel to Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief is a dumbed down version written for today's millennial generation of the Greek myth about the famed Golden Fleece and its healing powers. Instead of Jason leading his crew of the Argonauts in the quest of finding the Golden Fleece, it's Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), his demigod friends - Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Grover (Brandon T. Jackson), camp rival Clarisse (Leven Rambin) and baddie cousin Lucas/Luke (Jake Abel) and half brother Tyson (Douglas Smith) on the quest to find the Golden Fleece in order to do one or two things: (a) to save their Half Blood camp (a magical place where the children of the Gods train, live and etc) or (b) resurrected Kronos (Robert Knepper), a molten-rock looking Titan who was "murdered" long ago by his own children - Zeus, Hades and Poseidon. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">So why does Camp Half Blood (someone could have thought up a better name than that) need saving? Well, according to the voiceover by Polyphemus (Ron Perlman), 4 young children of Gods were trying to reach this place but only 3 made because young Thalia (the older version portrayed by Paloma Kwiatkowski) sacrificed her life to save the others and since she's Zeus' daughter, he turn her into a tree thus creating an unseen barrier protecting the other campers from outside predators (i.e. cyclops) and whatnot. After the camp is attacked by a mechanical Minotaur bull (who's bright idea was it that this thing should be spewing great balls of fire and/or having whirling razor saw blades for a PG movie?!), the campers discover the beloved tree that has been protecting them for so long is *gasp* *shock* *oh, the horror* poisoned! This sparks the the quest for the Golden Fleece given to the camp champion, Clarisse.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">However there can't be a quest without an oracle prophecy for our hero, Percy Jackson to solve ...or this would be a rather short movie run time, blogspot readers. So after discovering he has a half brother (it seems if the God of Water mates with a nymph, you get a cyclopetic brother) and a prophecy about two children of Zeus (wait, SouthSide thought Poseidon was his father?! Where's Maury for the DNA results?) fighting over the Golden Fleece to either destroy or save the Olympians, our hero along with his friends and his brother whom he doesn't consider as his brother (just yet) also set off on the quest to find the Fleece located at the Sea of Monsters (aka Bermuda Triangle to us mortals) to stop their cousin Lucas (or Luke depending whichever name he responds to or uses throughout this movie - very confusing) from using it on Kronos to overthrow Zeus and others, blogspot readers.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">It's amazing how Greek mythology wasn't <i>this</i> exciting and <i>this</i> adventurous when SouthSide was younger. And yes, she's being very sarcastic for good reason. Besides Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters being a poorly written re-telling of Jason and the Argonauts and the Gold Fleece, this sequel also read like a "woe is me" after school special because each Percy, Annabeth, Tyson and Clarisse learn a lesson at the end of this movie. You add baddie Lucas or Luke (whichever name you prefer) to the list since he learns one too. **<b>Caution if you don't want to know - stop reading now and skip to the end</b>.** Percy learns that he has the right to choose his own destiny, Annabeth learns she must not pre-judge another despite what happened in the past, Tyson learns to accept his one eye self and love who he is and finally, Clarisse learns that champion is not based on self endeavors but on teamwork. Also there's a whole lot of political correctness tossed about in this movie (i.e. it's wrong to call "dead confederate sailors who have given their lives to Hades" zombies but it seems they like that better than the long name) and even Lucas' dad Hermes (Nathan Fillion) has a moment learning that the mistakes made by a father in turn creates a vengeful son.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sighs - as if this generation of kids need to learn lessons like these in a movie like this...</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Sadly, blogspot readers, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters wastes the fine talents of Stanley Tucci (aka Caesar Flickerman of The Hunger Games and Catching Fire / Dr. Abraham Erskine of Captain America: The First Avenger) as the name-forgetting, "always getting water out of vintage wine bottles" camp director - Mr. D which is played as if he's a total dolt and Anthony Stewart Head (aka The Prime Minister in Little Britain / Rupert Giles of Buffy The Vampire Slayer series) as Chiron the Centaur, the camp's chemist/potions. It also has the Graeae witches (the 3 grey witches) starring Mary Birdsong, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Missi Pyle driving (of all things) a high-flying, speed-breaking taxi cab with their one eye adding a bit of comedic relief while giving Percy more details about the oracle prophecy. Speaking of comedy, blogspot readers, it horribly falls flat in this movie. Let SouthSide know if you have heard this one before "...Christians have a guy who can do this reverse (i.e. changing water into wine) ...now there's a God!" Surprisingly, that (and others) drew a few laughs but sadly, not a huge "ha ha ha" from the audience.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Overall, what can SouthSide say or recommend about Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (which is based on the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan - 5 books in all, blogspot readers ...groans)? Nothing much except the ending does allude to a sequel (oh, joy). You can definitely see that most of the production cost went to the fx (special effects) department than developing a decent re-telling about the quest for the Golden Fleece. Her advice - stick to the books, kids! Save your money, parents! Or better yet, rent the 1963 movie - Jason and the Argonauts and the 1981 movie - Clash of the Titans (both featuring the late Ray Harryhausen's stop animation fx). Two great movies ...a bigger bang for your buck. Trust SouthSide, Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters wasn't enjoyable ...even in 3D.</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">She hopes Hollywood generously paid Zeus well for the butchering of his myths and legends...</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Until next time, support your local scene,</div><div style="text-align: justify;">SouthSide</div></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15781209617172261323noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4886526953128809490.post-38955908333773796252014-01-11T12:42:00.000-08:002014-01-11T12:42:00.793-08:00FH-FB053-1112 Floral Embroidery Design Car Seat Covers, Airbag Ready and Split Bnech, Pink Color<a href="http://www.amazon.com/FH-FB053-1112-Floral-Embroidery-Design-Covers/dp/B006RL3KQW%3FSubscriptionId%3DAKIAJ5DAUUMCL6FZ25KQ%26tag%3Dle0372-20%26linkCode%3Dxm2%26camp%3D2025%26creative%3D165953%26creativeASIN%3DB006RL3KQW"><img src="http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41nPtlBY8QL._SL160_.jpg" /></a><br /><strong>Features</strong><br /><ul><li>Front seat covers have velcro opening on the top for easy insert of headrest. If it's a Wednesday, then it's time for the weekly local music showcase hosted by Matthew Alfano (of Mason's Case) at Lakeview's Elbo Room. However tonight, SouthSide enjoyed the entertainingly delightful set of singer/songwriter performance by new friend Josh Damigo (from San Diego). Recently sharing a tour with her other friend, Matt Ryd, before heading back to California, this artist entertained the audience with funny tales and Disney movie theme songs at the upstairs lounge.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">SouthSide highly suggests checking out this singer/songwriter at his next live performance which wasn't so ordinary or a typical acoustic act, blogspot readers. This reviewer got the distinct feeling he likes to keep his audience on their toes. And by doing just that, there were little surprises around every corner with this singer/songwriter. At one point, he improvised a song while Matt Ryd (acting as his roadie) re-strung his guitar - more about that one in a minute. With his heartfelt emotions inside the dynamic vocals amidst a unique acoustic sound that featured a loop to add his own voice and/or music as backing, SouthSide enjoyed the energy and spirit to which this singer/songwriter had wrapped around his songs. Even while emitting some heartfelt tenderness, Josh and his voice made you feel not just the music but every word spoken. For example, he took a popular Jim Croce ballad (I'll Have To Say I Love You In A Song) sort of flipped it to make the song feel more personal and sentimental within his vocal style adding the right amount of emotions that he almost made SouthSide cry. And to sing part of the song without a mic - now that was impressive to this reviewer. Just to hear his natural tone emitting the purest emotions loud and clear in a downtempo rhythm ...well don't know how the audience felt but to her - it was truly amazing. One small note, Josh had a rare chance to perform with AJ Croce at a show. </div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">After that tender moment, Josh did lighten up the mood with his Otis Redding's (Sitting On) The Dock of the Bay sounding song to which will definitely lift you out of your doldrums due to the wit and humor in the lyrics. Another fun moment was when he performed Pocket Change but not as song but in a poetic spoken word style with the audience clapping and Matt using a speaker box for percussion rhythms - all this while he was trying to string his guitar. Now, add a couple of improvisational voice beatbox tones to a loop machine and watch this song take off into a new direction. Yet, also SouthSide enjoyed his vivid imagery during the song LA Is Not My Home to where he clearly conveyed and described life there off his lyrics before rousing the audience with another demonstration of his vocal powress as heard in the song, Saves The Day. Now Josh concluded his performance with song requests from fans like Slow Going and Cougar (yes, a song about older women with their cubs) in which both featured intense guitar playing as well as a spectacular demonstration of his dynamic vocals. Then out of the blue, Josh started singing a couple of bars of Disney's Little Mermaid, Part Of Your World, blogspot readers, that not only surprised this reviewer (since Elbo Room wouldn't be a typical place to hear Disney tunes) but also quite unique to hear this iconic song from a male point of view. He even did a few bars of Kiss The Girl too before standing on a barstool to powerfully close out his show.</div><br /><div style="text-align: justify;">Josh Damigo, blogspot readers - an artist not afraid to sing Disney songs at a venue! This time, she's rockin' the Northwest side at Abbey Pub for the final MTM GRP CHGO's Respect the Mic Vs Fresh Produce concert series of 2011. This Chicago-based hip hop events company has successfully ran a mixtape Mondays/Tuesdayz (an original paid open mic) in the past thus starting this concert series "...<i>to influence and educate artists on creating their own lane</i>..." Hosted by well-known producer Tony Baines (who has has produced music for known artists like Twista, Mic Terror and many more), every participating artist and producer that performed on stage also earned money during tonight's event. Besides performances and producer battles, the legendary DJ Maseo (of De La Soul) was scheduled as headliner with Chicago's own Notrydo.Sincere and others opening for him. However, due to time constraint, DJ Maseo was unable to perform, blogspot readers, but SouthSide was granted an exclusive interview with this artist in which she asked for his thoughts about the music industry (hip hop in general) today to whether or not De La Soul would have the success it did back in the 90s if entering the scene now ...and many more.<br /><br />Many might know DJ Maseo as a man wearing many hats within the music industry. Besides being a rapper, producer, DJ, 1/3 of the ground-breaking hip hop trio known as De La Soul and the laugh behind Gorillaz's Feel Good Inc hit single, did you also know he's a father of four and very philosophical about the world (music and more included) around him in his own comedic way, blogspot readers? When asked to describe himself in five (5) words or less, DJ Maseo had plenty to say about himself to this reviewer by responding "...<i>nostalgic fresh inspirational tenacious and loving ...that could be abusive</i>..." You should add "...<i>funny too ...when it don't cost</i>..." to that list because during most of the interview he had SouthSide laughing so hard from his comedic wit and point views though being very blunt and truthful about what he had to say. "...<i>my comedy is free ...my donation to the world</i>..." since he still had kids to feed. DJ Maseo did mention he was approached to do a reality television show in the past but turned down that offer (plus not stating whom or network that made the offer). This reviewer asked why to which he replied saying that he didn't want to expose his family to that kind of environment opting to keep them and their lives private. "...<i>lose families that way</i>..."<br /><br />Despite insisting that his personal views about the music industry (mainly hip hop) would kill his career, DJ Maseo in his own philosophical way had plenty to say on the subject. When asked if De La Soul would have the same success today as it did back in the 90s, he said no because records don't sell today. He also stated by saying "...<i>[we're] at the age when people like music but don't love it ...the era before us, music meant something ...made a difference</i>.." DJ Maseo continued by adding music today "...<i>[is] just business</i>..." in which artists are fighting a "...<i>creative war ...and we [the artists] lost</i>..." He cited one more reason why De La Soul wouldn't be successful today. "<i>You don't have to be quality just current</i>..." says Maseo "...<i>artists today are machines ...feed the people the same bullshit and they start thinking it's the shit</i>..." Then SouthSide asked him how has the music industry and hip hop changed to which he responded "...<i>today's hip hop is good</i>..." but personally cannot relate to the genre. It's his belief that "...<i>music is impressionable on the youth</i>..." using an example how his parents couldn't understand anything he listened to beyond Grandmaster Flash. "...<i>Hip Hop [like rock] was rebel music ...rebelling against society</i>..." says DJ Maseo "...<i>now it's part of society and economic grain ...it [hip hop] is watered down ...even rock is watered down</i>..." Then he concluded by adding "...<i>it's not rock ...it's rock with pop ...rock is not chaos anymore</i>..."<br /><br />Briefly, DJ Maseo discussed how he would like to see the right people educating the youth about hip hop. He said this because he had the opportunity to teach a college course on how to be a DJ/hip hop producer. "...<i>soon you will need a piece of paper ...credentials [to work] in the music industry</i>..." He believes that having credentials is another form of control "...<i>teaching us on how to follow the rules throughout life</i>..." SouthSide did agree with this artist when commenting that there's "...<i>no outside of the box thinking</i>..." especially in today's educational system. That being said, this reviewer wanted to know his thoughts aobut music in general to which he said hip hop/rap shows what's (truly) goes on in the world though "...<i>we rely on it too much</i>..." In his eyes, he sees music especially hip hop as entertainment and nothing more with its many varieties catering to select group of people such as Latino, stripper, gangsta, party, religious, etc. "...<i>it [hip hop] has something to offer people of like minds</i>..." Other genres, according to the philosophical mind of DJ Maseo, conjur fairy tales within music and unlike hip hop, cannot connect with individuals. "...<i>hip hop has no generation gap ...unlike rock (i.e. classic and modern), there's more of an understanding and connection because hip hop is within its same genre</i>..." Though believing "...<i>no other genre of music can bridge the generation gap</i>..." like hip hop can, DJ Maseo does see hip hop falling towards that sub-genre path as Rock did.<br /><br />Before ending this philosophical interview, DJ Maseo encouraged everyone to follow him on Facebook and Twitter as well as join his 600,000 plus followers on his U-Stream channel. He was the first artist to use this medium to connect with a web audience and use all of the U-Stream's features and preferences for his webcasts. DJ Maseo broadcasts live from his house what he calls a "Wayne's World" like show that features him and special guest DJs/artists. While parting with "...<i>I come from an era when everyone was a star based on creativity to me</i>...", Chicago hip hop artist Notrydo.Sincere added his own personal thoughts about DJ Maseo into the conversation stating "...<i>DJ Maseo is an icon</i>..." He also commented how the artist and his music saved his life from the streets and gangs. To DJ Maseo, that was more rewarding to hear than any accolade or award received. For more information about DJ Maseo, visit <a href="http://www.myspace.com/djmaseo">http://www.myspace.com/djmaseo</a>.<br /><br />Before the main event of Respect the Mic which featured brief performances by Contagious, D Money, Rio and Notrydo.Sincere, DJ Maseo instilled some helpful advice to all of the performers in the audience that they can actually do this full-time without a big time contract backing them if they follow two simple steps: start it as a passion and then treat themselves and their craft as a business to make money. The opening acts presented a wide range of up-n-coming artists performing different styles of hip hop/rap on stage such as gangsta to party and some having a heavy bass or melodic sound. In SouthSide's opinion, there were a few hits and misses based on the audience's reactions even though each hip hop act had a few minutes to impress them with their tracks and stage presence. Sometimes it was the microphone used that was the main culprit during a performance from bad feedback to low volume that this reviewer couldn't hear a single word said. Or perhaps it was a combination of things (i.e. music, MC) which didn't generate much hype or energy at all. Mid-way through the show, there was producer battles in which producers pitted their best beat tracks against each other and the audience (by show of hands and cheers) voted for their favorite. These were fierce ..."take no prisoners" competitions for a cash prize, blogspot readers. SouthSide missed most of the battles because she was interviewing DJ Maseo however she did stay for the final rounds. Who were the top finalists of the night? Who won the cash prize? Keep reading this review to find out.<br /><br />Notrydo.Sincere may sound like something Yoda would say to any Jedi apprentice when doubting their abilities in using the Force. however that's not actually the case, blogspot readers. This Chicago artist received this special moniker from his grandmother which now has become his own personal mantra in life. "...<i>that any and all things must be done with the deepest level of passion and sincerity ...it leads to the highest power associated with 'doing' versus the attempts of a mere 'try' ...all one seeks to pursue must be done 'sincerely'</i>..." It's something this designer, songwriter, producer, keyboardist, and drummer tries to embody within his progressive music and style of hip hop that's known to be "...<i>lyrically passionate and captivating</i>..." Yet who is this artist really? When asked, he described his music to be "...<i>cultured dignity powerful love that comes from an honest place</i>..." It's meant to be inspiring and motivating but there's one thing that separates him from the rest, blogspot readers. He's the ONLY hip hop artist SouthSide knows with his own drumline. Incidentially, that was her first question to Notrydo.Sincere - what inspired him to incorporate a drumline with his act. He replied that he wanted to be different like The Roots whose music features live instruments (i.e. horns, percussions). He first met Jamie Poindexter (captain of the the drumline and who runs a program to keep troubled youth off the streets) while working on a marketing campaign for a client and soon the two performed together at Round Fest. That was four years ago. Notrydo said "...<i>they [people] like it but feel intimidated at first ...now we're getting a lot of press about it</i>..." This artist and his drumline has appeared in festivals around town performing sixty shows (or more) a year.<br /><br />Notrydo.Sincere and his drumline along with backing MC Kaotic rocked down the Abbey stage with an energizing percussion force and rhythmic momentum that kept this crowd hyped despite the shortness of his set. The live percussion sound against his DJ complemented each other giving every song performed that resounding umph of electricity (and more) as the music wafted throughout the lively venue. This reviewer not only saw the energy surging amongst the crowd as well as inciting them to react but also felt it immediately when this artist first hit the stage and during his cover of Tony Baines' <i>Incredible</i>. She asked him if there's a message that he's trying to convey within his hip hop to which Notrydo replied "...<i>every time ...people need to understand it's a movement ...[something] way bigger than me</i>..." This artist uses unconventional methods to get that message across to the masses like putting his entire album Robot on a 2 Gig flashdrive featuring more unconventional hip hop music. Currently, he's working on two projects one of which with producer Tony Baines that's a special tribute to Prince calling it the purple album. So SouthSide, had to know what inspires this unique hip hop artist's music and lyrical verses. Notrydo replied stating "...<i>good music</i>..." with a beaming smile which might surprise many that he doesn't listen to rap music per se but does listen to instrumental classics giving his recommendation to Pandora. And classic would be any genre. Whether it's rock, the legendary blues artist John Lee Hooker ...even A-Ha. What Notrydo is really into these days is Afro-beats and he did disclose to SouthSide of his plans to move to Africa one day having dual citizenships here and there. Who knows, blogspot readers, one day there might be an Afro-beat album by this phenomenial artist. Closing this interview, Notrydo.Sincere suggested blogspot readers listening to his track <i>Let's Go</i> "...<i>wrote it in one take ...I love to be inspired ...to be spontaneous ...that's why women love me</i>..." Also Notrydo dedicated one of his favorite inspirational Fela track to this reviewer at the end of the show and she could absolutely hear why it would inspire and motivate him. The music within this particular track had a lively beat and energizing rhythm that instantly had her dancing to the melodic groove. Tonight, she's deep in Wrigleyville at Metro for an extra special show featuring her friend, Midnight Conspiracy during Dead Fame Bass event. This 18 and older show featured dance/dubstep/remix DJ sets by other artists on the lineup including Cenob1te, Ruckus and Enoptix until wee hours of the morning. <br /><br />When this reviewer arrived, the main floor of Metro was already filling up with party people ...some dressed in their finest costumed attire for the occasion from the anime to J/K pop wear and glow sticks. All night long the main floor was in a constant state of motion while on stage with the DJs were hoop girls showing off their best hula hoop tricks and dancers underneath the neon glow of the dazzling lights. Openers like White Muhammad had this crowd groovin' to the lively yet downtempoed dubstep of old school reggae/ska remixes with a bit of techno inserted into the rhythms. This particular DJ had the entire venue under his infectious beats especially when rockin' the stage with "I Guess I Got My Swagger Back" track, a hardcore dubstep rhythms within the robotic tone. DJ Enoptix continued where White Muhammad ended who kept this crowd hopping and more the electronica sound thus turning the scene into one wild chaotic spontaneous frenzy of clubsters. SouthSide enjoyed the techno mixed with a haunting Goth sound that was very energizing at time ...very a excitable in momentum as Enoptix wowed the fans with a couple of new tracks and originals.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/6895454801/" title="Midnight_3 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7180/6895454801_fc1bacb9f9_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Midnight_3"></a><br /><br />SouthSide's friend, Midnight Conspiracy has their "eye" on you, blogspot readers. This gigantic "eye" (actually a DJ booth for the duo) has LCD lights pulsating to the music as well as a laser lights thus adding to the already dazzling effects within Metro. Though the balcony was the best (and safest) place to view the "eye" and its special effects, the main floor of Metro seemed to be the perfect place to bask amongst the excitement and frenzy of the crowd now that club atmosphere was on full blast. There were body surfers (Midnight Conspiracy DJs included) floating around the crowd though against the rules. Besides, body surfing, there was also brief periods of moshing and slam dancing on the main floor. Yet, how can one contain such energy felt as well as heard from the music when each Midnight track pumped more excitable momentum keeping everyone captive within the nonstop motion of dancing? The crowd really felt the dazzling light effects when Midnight Conspiracy performed both The Eye and remix version (of the song) ...and boy, did SouthSide feel the earth move during the uncontrollable wildness around her. It was insane inside the music membrane, blogspot readers. This had to be one of the wildest shows seen so far in her reviewing career.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/southsidechgo/6895449173/" title="Midnight_3 by SouthSideChgo, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7208/6895449173_4021106155_m.jpg" width="240" height="180" alt="Midnight_3"></a><br /><br />Overall, SouthSide sees Midnight Conspiracy and the "Eye" becoming a huge hit with their legion of fans. " according to JP of Villains Company and are the "...<i>good villains</i>..." according to Johnny (the oldest member of Villains Company and JP's father). This villainous band is quite different in band makeup as well as music style than from what this reviewer has covered over the year. This particular band doesn't come to the stage with any fancy costumes or industrial/hardcore rock music but each member does represent a vast variety of rock genres from Eric Clapton to Coldplay and Soundgarden within their sound and music which truly makes Villains Company quite unique, blogspot readers. During the frantic frenziness of what's known here in the states Black Wednesday (the day before Thanksgiving), this reviewer not only got a chance to see this Southside band rock the Hard Rock Cafe stage as well as conduct a rather revealing interview with the members of Villains Company.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrkGOZ_7qvxq7pykJQJkd5NfmDJI_FHKyrSgHHM8aTNQX6am2BW7aJ4y57QSu6i3JtC4JklcZB3Y4UifGPoqUsFikV7bloKbi0JXlceOJwLDXovOT9wjWQF1RX0rl8kACsCVk2Z4_rGGUG/s1600/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-7656-8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="256" nea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrkGOZ_7qvxq7pykJQJkd5NfmDJI_FHKyrSgHHM8aTNQX6am2BW7aJ4y57QSu6i3JtC4JklcZB3Y4UifGPoqUsFikV7bloKbi0JXlceOJwLDXovOT9wjWQF1RX0rl8kACsCVk2Z4_rGGUG/s320/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-7656-8.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;">Mark Baker 2012</span></div></div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">Describing the band to SouthSide as "...<i>blue-collared workers having fun</i>..." like ordinary Joes, she asked JP what made Villains Company "ordinary" compared to the other Villain(s) bands out on the scene. For one thing, blogspot readers, they're not rockin' the stage to make money. Perhaps when most of the members were kids, they did have aspirations of making money and traveling the world with their music. However, that was before getting married, starting a family and holding down regular day jobs ...and way before practicing once a week in a month's time with pieces of the band practicing together. Can't dispute, blogspot readers, when priorities and families come first (sometimes) while you are involved with a band. JP told SouthSide a story about how their bass player (Jon) who works for UPS and resides in Gurnee, IL couldn't make it for their Double Door show at one time supportiing the night's headliner. According to him, "...<i>any</i> <i>band would have let him go ...but with Villains Company, [we're] family</i>..." also adding "...<i>we have priorities and families now that we're older</i>..." So how did his father, Johnny, end up joining the band? "...<i>we</i> <i>were looking for a guitar player and [him] join the band ...plus I know his work schedule and where he lives</i>..." then jokingly adding "...<i>he thinks he's all that but he is</i>..." And if his dad ruins the show by missing and/or adding a riff or two, the rest of Villains Company doesn't mind because Johnny has what they call "old man" clause on his side. Meaning, Johnny has classic rock credibility, blogspot readers. He may be the oldest member of this band but you should have seen him acting like a young twentysomething. Rumor has it, he does sometimes attracts the young ladies. "...<i>now</i> <i>he has an 'I was out with your son' excuse [when] coming home late</i>..." Also, on a sidenote, Johnny gives great hugs, ladies.<br /><br />Oh, by the way at 11:46p, Julie left the interview. </div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWVylwOmHhxigRKJ7rUK6fpym_li1Xec3ZShPuGK8VOJtHr0c820hiI2Hd0v5d3oYUs-xy-8g2YNz2sqRb0nCIe02hQLNYpabYwB7fPHRyF3iT7pGPt7x7UV_G20phKwLVLob_yoKVoXZv/s1600/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8368-6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" nea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWVylwOmHhxigRKJ7rUK6fpym_li1Xec3ZShPuGK8VOJtHr0c820hiI2Hd0v5d3oYUs-xy-8g2YNz2sqRb0nCIe02hQLNYpabYwB7fPHRyF3iT7pGPt7x7UV_G20phKwLVLob_yoKVoXZv/s320/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8368-6.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;">Mark Baker 2012</span></div><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">While wanting to be known that they're "...<i>play for fun</i>...", blogspot readers, Villains Company also wants you to know that they're "...<i>not try to be the most modern band out there</i>..." either. What makes this band stand apart from the other Villains bands is their drive to bring back the crunchy blues with melodic rhythms and emotionally heartfelt vocals besides being the local "...<i>sideshow</i>..." (according to JP) that does "...<i>all of the grunt work</i>..." (according to Junior - he's the "straight to the point" answer man). Yet, musically they draw from many influences like from JP's father - there's Pink Floyd and Journey to Jeff (being the "baby" of the band who's a Taurus and into latex) and his love for the hardcore metal sound. Every member has their own particular taste and genre of music and by looking at each one, you wouldn't think they were members of the same band. (Now we're joined by Jeff's landlord - Augie). Also what makes this band make up even more unique is that each one have their own style while performing on stage. For example, with Jeff being the drummer, he goes for more of the wooly-haired, metal shirt wearing comfy attire compared to JP looking business-casual with a tie and his father, Johnny, going for the "old school" dapper look with his fedora hat. According to JP, if Jeff were to cut his hair and shave, it would be "...<i>like a Samson and Deliah effect on the band</i>..." In the past they did try to adhere to the suggestions given to them for a couple of shows yet it didn't work to the band's liking. Noting that it's hard to compete out there in the local scene, Villains Company aren't really competing. They like to keep it real for themselves and their fans.<br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjAroztqGT26uT7XF1OFuSzGkPVHnsOUgTOr9B4u5sx4VSP-TWdX_eg8HddbjYpuZ2p_MVRQKvUZEoFHF9UEDfGVFP3xrJ4xbD1usQo6B-U2icQ70J3u59dTIGcewy7gHCrNIV8L-Newxq/s1600/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8498-45.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" nea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjAroztqGT26uT7XF1OFuSzGkPVHnsOUgTOr9B4u5sx4VSP-TWdX_eg8HddbjYpuZ2p_MVRQKvUZEoFHF9UEDfGVFP3xrJ4xbD1usQo6B-U2icQ70J3u59dTIGcewy7gHCrNIV8L-Newxq/s320/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8498-45.jpg" width="213" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;">Mark Baker 2012</span></div><br /><br />During the course of the Villains Company interview, blogspot readers, (and believe, SouthSide it was sort of a wild backstage interview here with a photographer, disco ball and tubful of Pabst Blue Ribbon), she asked the band which songs said fans check out. JP replied with three good selections - Feels Good, Momma and I Am You. Those particular songs were also fine examples of Villains Company musical style and sound. For example take Feels Good where JP not only was vocal expressive on the lyrics but his body language enhanced as well as convey the mood and tone of the song especially while becoming more dramatically heartfelt than dynamic under a falsetto range within a semi-downtempo rhythm. Meanwhile I Am You took a more melodic tone than most of Villains' songs while within an alternative/rock style because there's a sense of floetry that highlights JP's voice even though he did get a bit overshadowed by the rest of the band. Still, this reviewer particularly enjoyed how the song was reverently played so their fans and Hard Rock audience could enjoy the beauty and wonderment of all notes as well as the digital programming used. It was quite soothing to hear the vibrant electric wail down to melodic bass and percussion ...for a such a complex tune, there was simplicity to be found and enjoyed. Lastly, (definitely not least), Momma is a rather upbeat rhythmic tune in which JP did outshine the band, blogspot readers yet more than that. He was truly expressive on levels where the band had to keep up with him and his vocal powress to which SouthSide could honestly say Villains Company shined under the Hard Rock Cafe like rock stars before adding another heart-touching moment to their performance. Long story short version, blogspot readers, JP phoned a friend who was miraculously survived being shot 5 times after being robbed of his iPhone at the 47th Street CTA Red Line rail stop. SouthSide still gets teary-eyed thinking about this guy though missing the show was still determined to rock out with his friends soon. Check out the YouTube video done by photographer Mark Baker of Mark Baker Photography of JP calling the shooting victim <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eZCVVALQbc&feature=youtube_gdata_player">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7eZCVVALQbc&feature=youtube_gdata_player</a>. <br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2na2ho_HyZX0E9O99FX5LRzUZgfI5ZeUiaj0-rGXxwZiPXxWcZMCUGXI9n2xIBfGSvo5eAYOAmwf7rRaFGH9ptG-LXCDzFqPDtVzhrmAXy4qUDtXDl1nL2Dx8j-IajtbS4qxIjrAQsnhP/s1600/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8391-20.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" nea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg2na2ho_HyZX0E9O99FX5LRzUZgfI5ZeUiaj0-rGXxwZiPXxWcZMCUGXI9n2xIBfGSvo5eAYOAmwf7rRaFGH9ptG-LXCDzFqPDtVzhrmAXy4qUDtXDl1nL2Dx8j-IajtbS4qxIjrAQsnhP/s320/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8391-20.jpg" width="320" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;">Mark Baker 2012</span></div><br /><br />In between questions and learning about the band, SouthSide got a crash course about the American holiday, Thanksgiving (which was happening the next day) and the craziness of Black Friday to which it's described as "...<i>an addiction ...[Americans] like rockin' the coupon</i>..." that this reviewer may never understand why anyone would wait in the cold eating a turkey dinner waiting for the mall to open. Still, it's hard to get fans to come to shows especially the day before Thanksgiving aka Black Wednesday however tonight, she caught this band on a good night. Also, there was mention of the other crazy practice of saving parking spots with furniture to toys during the wintertime while covering all other subjects but religion. Political wise, Villains Company can be also considered as a "...<i>uninionized company</i>..." "...<i>this is why I vote democratic</i>..." says Jeff. Sadly it was getting late and the band wanted to see Out for Hours wrapping up this pre-holiday feast when SouthSide asked them if they had any final words or thoughts to say to their fans and blogspot readers. As you might imagine, they had plenty to say. From "...<i>if we didn't have this good company, we wouldn't have smiles on our faces</i>..." to "...<i>still have a lot of possibilities in our music</i>..." but JP did get the final word about Villains Company when saying "...<i>it's all about local scene and making it happen ...no one gives the local band chance</i>..." to which he and the band appreciates what SouthSide (and many others) do for the local music scene. <br /><br /><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-A5FwtmKSfcPYyo-xPlfxEhvMb3T5okNFFbj27ZQT54cY2jmFjyN8-1CtImSbqunTw01Hoba7SqmxJEtHudr3cZ5VtbL_KNb3MztHsdjdakhgbJGe3ALPdiTua3RmTDhj3Zi8E9R678SY/s1600/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8044-30.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" nea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj-A5FwtmKSfcPYyo-xPlfxEhvMb3T5okNFFbj27ZQT54cY2jmFjyN8-1CtImSbqunTw01Hoba7SqmxJEtHudr3cZ5VtbL_KNb3MztHsdjdakhgbJGe3ALPdiTua3RmTDhj3Zi8E9R678SY/s320/Black+Wednesday+-+Hard+Rock+Cafe+-+Chicago-8044-30.jpg" width="213" /></a><span style="font-size: x-small;">Mark Baker 2012</span></div><br />What a nice way to end this interview, blogspot readers. <br /><br />For more information about Villains Company and where they will be doing the grunt work for the other company of thieves, visit <a href="http://www.villainscompany.com/">http://www.villainscompany.com</a> or on Facebook.<br /><br />Also, HUGE photo credit goes to Mark Baker of Mark Baker Photography who snapped the photogs of the band while on stage and during the interview!
