***SouthSide's sincrerest apologies for the lateness of this review***

Photo0284 ~ DJRC

Hey, blogspot readers, welcome the rockin' start to one HOT weekend happening around town. SouthSide's schedule is going to be extremely tight trying to fit as many shows as possible into two solid days of local and touring performances. Tonight, she's at the heart of Lincoln Park area rockin' the Tonic Room for the premiere performance of Great Divide's residency. During the next three weeks, this local band will be headlining the stage while featuring support from other bands like Cole DeGenova & The Peoples Republic and Vitek (from Nashville, TN) with DJRC rockin' the house sound before and between sets with his vibrant collection of neo soul/R&B tunes. Other performances will include Harrison Hudson and AyoH (on November 8th) and DJRC and other special guests (on November 15th).

This reviewer arrived in time to catch the rest of Cole DeGenova & The Peoples Republic's opening set and she highly recommends checking the neo-soul/rock alternative sound of what this local band is vibin', blogspot readers. The music was hip-swaying, butt shakin-licious and toe tappin' under the melodic tones of the piano/synth rhythms and funkified guitar riffs especially the band performed a fresh (as in 2 hours old) new song which perfectly highlighted the rawness heard in Cole's (front man/keyboardist) vocals. With music and voice combined like this, dancing to People's songs is strongly advised and encouraged even when it's to get very deep and funky. SouthSide was swept away by the infectious melody and rhythm as well as loved feeling the boisterious finishes of a funky riff sound. Watching Cole get emotionally and dramatically expressive, especially during the song Rich Man's Money where his body language executed the lyrics while singing, had her feeling the energized momentum of music and words off the songs. At times, his voice could be heartfelt meanwhile during others, he was soulfully expressive that the words moved you to tears. SouthSide highly suggests rockin' the ears to Blues No More, Nowadays and Radio Hero. For more information about Cole DeGenova & The Peoples Republic, visit http://www.reverbnation.com/coledegenova or on Facebook.

Though having a bit of minor technical problems at the start of their Chicago appearance at Tonic Room, blogspot readers, this band hailing from Nashville, TN, pulled off one amazing show featuring lively, upbeat tempos and rockin' horn section (horns and saxophone) with a rhythmic synth vibe. SouthSide enjoyed Vitek's spin the neo-soul sound with a slight R&B/alternative groove even while in a downtempo, this band still kept the soundwave fresh and hip for you move to the beat. Music - despite hard to describe unless you attended the show, had a way of being simple and melodic yet very complex as well as intricately complicated at the same time especially they blended different genres together. The eclectic combination, blogspot readers, certainly had an organic feel at times (when harmonizing with each other) amidst the dual synths and keyboards to add that dream-like melody and the horns for that upbeat spark of life. Then on the other side of Vitek, there was some neo-jazz/soul mixed within the alternative rock sound if listened very closely which makes this band's vivid use of genres not so easy to classify or box into one category. Having those many layers like an onion, Vitek's music does make you vividly feel the vibin' soundwave and vivacious rhythms all at once. For example, during one particular song, the different sections of the band were on differect octave levels of rhythms and melodic groove while taking the audience on a space-like ride as if you were soaring high across the night skies. During another, they got organic and tribal in music and rhythms which brought out the members being totally immersed into their rhythmic sound and dance moves. Overall, this reviewer enjoyed Vitek's uniqu floetry of cross-genres and dimensions that's to be experienced live than hearing on a CD ...it will grab you soufully as well as spiritually, blogspot readers. For more information about Vitek, visit http://www.vitekmusic.com.

You truly know you have fans at a venue who enjoy your music when everyone starts shushing everyone else as your band steps onto the stage. That's what happened when Great Divide finally began their headlining residency at Tonic Room, blogspot readers, with the vibrant yet soulful gospel/alternative rock song, Shine (track  5 off Great Divide). This featured song as well as many others definitely had their fans including SouthSide feeling the energized momentum off this upbeat tempo. Combined with the heartfelt but emotionally dynamic falsetto vocals (by Jeff and Teddy) wonderfully highlighting the "feel good" sensation to which had fans grooving to the vivid sound (especially off Great's horn section). Song after song, this local band had the venue jumpin', jivin' and swayin' to the rhythmic beat. Featuring other songs off their new album like Ain't No Roads (track 1), Great Divide rocked Tonic Room with a combination of soulful R&B groove, jazzy rhythms, some Philly funk (for the song Freedom Love) and downtempo melodic ballad that brought out the emotions and sentimental heartache during another particular song. Like the two previous bands, Great put on a powerful appearance to kick off the start of their residency at this venue. SouthSide wished she could have stayed til the end of their set yet did check out Great Divide's latest CD suggesting you listen to the vividness found in the picturesque song Autumn Leaves (track 6) and the vibrant feel that things will be okay in It's Alright (track 9).  For more information about Great Divide and it's music, visit http://www.greatdivideband.com.

CD Review

Hey, blogspot readers, the summer tunes keep playing on SouthSide's stereo system. For acoustic blues/rock/alternative fans, she highly suggests giving Dara's 9-track CD a good listen while for those who love the fast lane of electric guitar rock, she suggests sinking your teeth into the 3-track CD by Red Mercury Sky.

Dara
http://www.daratunes.com

Wow, what a soul-searching you're going to have with this particular CD, blogspot readers. This album will give you the sense that each of us in life embark on a lifelong mission in finding the undeniable truth but only to discover we're not perfect. Yet it's our imperfections is what makes and defines us as a person and who we are in this crazy world. Singer/songwriter Dara (who does all of the vocals and guitars for this CD) wonderfully conveys such a notion throughout each song reaching different stages of life. Through the use of his soulfully dynamic vocal falsetto range to heartfelt expressiveness in his voice as well as the tone, mood and different music genres cleverly meshed together, Dara offers little slices of life while taking your ears on that journey to search for the truth about yourself (via his lyrics) which at times can be somber as a sad ballad or upbeat and inspirational. For example, take a listen to track 2 - Hold Of My Soul in which this particular song was a little reminiscent of Johnny Cash's Walk The Line yet with a more tempered acoustic/alternative rock sound ...enough to highlight the dynamic tone and emotions in the vocals. This truly had SouthSide's attention but in the last place you would think - her soul. The words demonstrated how humanity when at our weakest is when we are great - it was moving from beginning to end. Check out track 5 - Heard The News where it was dark and somber amidst the lyrical imagery while listening to the emotions pouring from Dara's voice to paint a not so pretty picture about life. His words were absolutely realistic, blogspot readers, to say we rarely have that "they lived happily ever after" ending in life. Definitely check out the lively, upbeat feel of Judgement Day (track 6) where you get to feel as well as hear the vibrant blast of blues rock ...even this artist's voice clearly projectes that same excited momentum meanwhile in track 8 - No Coming Back, you can truly tell that he means it this time ...if you leave, there's no coming back though he's willing to be there when you fall ...but in track 1 - Guilt, you will be moved by the heartfelt emotions though surrounded in somber tone with a slightly upbeat guitar riff tempo. Ending with an uplifting inspirational song (track 9 - Alright) in which Dara reminds us after all of the trials and tribulations in our lives, there's always the notion things will be alright. And that's our saving grace and hope as human beings while surviving in this crazy world.

Red Mercury Sky

What do you get when you combine the best of two former local bands - Heavy The Fall (Dan Graunke on vocals/guitar and Erik Kikke on guitar and The Branded (Jay Mishur on drums and M-Shen on bass)? Well, blogspot readers, you have the sound of hardcore electric guitar rock with some melodic vocals and hip-shaking grooviness. SouthSide highly suggests cranking up the volume while listening to this 3-track CD to feel the electric vibe flowing off each song (especially the last track - Mad Love ...the "wham bam thank you fast and furious ma'am" type of  guitar rock here). This reviewer was thoroughly impressed by the tiny sample of this band's rock sound ...and don't even try to categorize it either since the music itself has its own little mood swings. The songs project 3 different sides to love (or however you want to preceive the lyrics) that is met with dynamic falsetto and emotions in the vocals, intense energy and momentum (especially at the instrumental bridges) to immerse you deeply into their soundwaves, and the electric flow coupled with the thundering percussions - SouthSide couldn't get enough of it. Yet all the while - these songs have a groovy melodic tone and tempo for that hip shaking vibe. After diving into track 1 - Blood On My Hearts, get ready to feel that emotional dynamicness of Dan's voice during Save Me (a love that needs rescuing) where the electric is a little low key, but not to worry, blogspot readers, the band does crank out the guitar rock at the chorus before quickly moving into track 3 - Mad Love (love on the fast run) - this particular will leave you feeling breathless due to its electric rush woven throughout the melody. Definitely crank this song up on the highest volume setting you have to fully enjoy every heart-pounding sound. If you want to see this band live and up close, then head to Ultra Lounge on August 10th where they will be sharing the stage with Mindsight and Sunset Empire. The show is 21+ and $8.

16 Dec 11

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's having some pre-holiday fun this weekend! She's rockin' around the holiday tree at Reggie's Music Joint for a very special performance by Misstallica (PA) featuring local band Heaven & Hell opening. Thought not big on reviewing cover/tribute bands, this reviwer does make a few exceptions to that rule and highly suggests getting your Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath (as well as Dio and Rainbow) fix from this local band - Heaven & Hell (http://www.myspace.com/heavenandhellchicago). There was no skimping on the rock experience, blogspot readers, nor were there any disappointed fans thoughout their set. Performing classic Sabbath hits like Fairies Wear Boots, Children of the Grave, War Pigs and Dio's - Holy Diver, the front man and his band definitely knew their Ozzy Osbourne fowards and backwards. Every riff ...chord ...changes and lyrics as well as Ozzy handclapping/tambourne mannerisms was captured and timely executed without a single mistake despite a couple of exceptions - no biting of a bat's head or wearing the infamous Ozzy white-fringed one-piece suit. Yet, that didn't matter to SouthSide who was rockin' out along with the Reggie's door/security team while feeling the metal excitement and head banging momentum especially during N.I.B. and Heaven & Hell.

SouthSide would like to make it clear - these rockin' chicks LOVE Metallica ...and no, fellas, they're not your average backstage groupies either. They're actually the world's only all female Metallica tribute band from Philadelphia known as Misstallica ...also formerly known as Misstallicunt and other name variations. First time in Chicago, this tribute band brought the raw head banging metal angst of Metallica and its fierce twitterpating riffs to the fans of this famed band. And that was merely the first two opening songs, blogspot readers, heard within this headlining performance. These rockin' ladies were tearin' up the Music Joint stage with a powerful force of music and sound that clearly demonstrated these rockers weren't going to skimp on the Metallica experience either. They did more than just thrill and wow this crowd. They rocked out the venue with a classic Metallica album in its entirity to the delight of cheers and screams since no one wanted to hear new Metallica material tonight. What SouthSide liked about Misstallica, besides knowing their Metallica material, blogspot readers, was the feminine vocals angst and spite that was pumped into the original lyrics of each song performed. It gave SouthSide as well as every hardcore fan a complete and different point of view than originally written with testosterone vocals. Lead vocalist Gina (also on guitar) thrilled this screaming crowd with her raw yet deep vocals spewing some of the most heated venom over the microphone amidst the gritty guitar sound. Misstallica's music by Metalallica was nothing to sneeze at either. These gals essentially captured the famed rock band's complicated and intricate guitar work and percussion rhythms. If you're a diehard Metallica fan, this performance was definitely for you. This reviewer highly suggests rockin' out with Misstallica at their next scheduled performance. Visit http://www.misstallica.com for more information and where Metallica will be featured on the stage again.

02 May 13 - Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide’s rockin’ inside a historic movie palace with a group of friendly neighbors! Tonight, this reviewer is lost amongst the crowded main floor while rockin' with Nashville’s Drew Holcomb and The Neighbors who were opening for Need To Breathe’s “Drive All Night” Chicago tour stop.

This reviewer highly recommends rockin’ with this singer/songwriter duo and his lively neighbors at their next scheduled performance, blogspot readers, for the heartwarming emotion wrapped inside an uplifting “feel good” Americana rock sound. Performing songs off their latest release, Good Light, this band impressed SouthSide with plenty of danceable fast-paced tempos and the sentimental lyrics that at times burst to life especially whenever front man Drew and co-vocalist Ellie sung together. She enjoyed how this vocalist pair not only complemented but also fed off each other in both lyrics and music. For example, take their acoustic duet towards the end of the performance in which SouthSide felt the heartfelt words pouring into the microphone ...never had she heard such tender words while Drew and Ellie expressed their deepest thoughts to their fans. This, in SouthSide’s opinion, was the highlight of Drew’s rockin’ set.

And this reviewer doesn’t want to forget about the entire band either, blogspot readers. Each Neighbor member truly captured the fun mood and/or tone of the songs performed in order to make the vivid imagery pop to life for this crowd. It was as if you weren’t the audience but part of the neighborly jamboree rockin’ the stage. Besides immersing you within the heartfelt tenderness in which you felt moments of longing and heartache, Drew and the band also made you feel alive within its energizing spirit and Americana sound. A word of advice, blogspot readers, dancing is allowed when seeing this band perform especially when they closed with a vibrant bang. Just by watching a few of SouthSide’s “neighbors” around her during the show she could tell that people (even the younger audience members) were having a good rockin’ time with Drew Holcomb and his music.

07 Dec 12 - Dan Sindel

Hey, blogspot readers, recently one of SouthSide’s good friends from Los Angeles disclosed to her and many other friends of his battle with tongue cancer. Through love, support and prayers, Dan Sindel is now cancer free. However she’ll let him tell you his story...

“...Last June, I was diagnosed with cancer of the tongue. On July 12, 2012, I went in for major surgery and had to have over ½ of my tongue removed to clear the tumor ...then went through 6 grueling weeks of radiation as well as a few chemo treatments. I am steadily recovering and so grateful for life itself, the amazing doctors who saved me and the immense support from family and friends...”

Dan continues by stating “...the rate of cancer cases is growing and affects so many people. I want to make an impact and try to save lives. I can best help by raising money for cancer research through the gift of my music...”

To give back by helping others, blogspot readers, Dan has put together a fine collection of nine (9) experimental / instrumental rock tunes in a unique CD project titled Plateaus which was recorded using his own home studio. This artist wrote all the songs, played all the instruments, and programmed all the drums and synthesizers as well as recorded and mixed the entire project himself.

By visiting his site, http://www.dansindel.us/ , “...I kindly ask [in helping] me in the fight against cancer by downloading a copy of my new release ...and give a small donation using PayPal...” With a minimum donation of $5 to download the album, Dan hopes to raise $500 where it will be donated to The Cancer Research Center to help save (more) lives, blogspot readers. So far, Dan has raised $250 (as of today Dec 10)!

SouthSide also highly recommends check out Dan Sindel’s YouTube page in particularly watching one of her favorite songs included in the CD titled Into The Ether and feel the soothing yet electric rush of flying through the universe with Dan and his instrumental rock sound ...it’s truly poetry in flowing motion, blogspot readers. Visit - http://youtu.be/h1-e45Jzq58 Into The Ether - Dan Sindel - Music for cancer research. Also check out his others like Anitras Dance (another SouthSide favorite) as well as his instrumental interpretation of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata and the works by John Philip Sousa.

06 Aug 12

Hey, blogspot readers, it's another rockin' jamboree deep within the heart of Lakeview on a Monday night! Tonight, at Schuba's Tavern, many came out to the first perfomances of The New Folk & Practice Space residency featuring top notch local folk bands/artists like Common Shriner, Jonas Friddle, Band Called Catch, New Folk and Cyndy Fike rockin' the stage every Monday during the month of August. New Folk will be releasing their debut album, Sea Fever, on Aug 27th. For more information about upcoming shows, visit http://www.schubas.com.

The Damn Choir 1 ~ The Damn Choir

Tonight, the audience was treat to a lineup featuring performances by Cyndy Fike and Jeremy Keen and the False Starts with The Damn Choir as headliner. Comparing this performance to the one seen earlier during the spring, SouthSide thoroughly enjoyed this show and highly suggests checking out this local band at their next scheduled show. This quintet of musicians brought to the stage such intensity amidst high energetic momentum highlighting the emotional vocal falsetto (from front man/guitarist Gordon) and harmonizing backing vocals that she didn't hear at their The Hideout performance. At times, you could literally feel the intense sound of The Damn's melodic Americana/folk (with some pop/alternative) music besides hearing it uplift your soul to which the vocals wonderfully translate the fierce passion and emotions within its three-part harmonies. After opening the set with a moving yet boisterous blast of sound and vocals conveying the melodic aria tone in Road, The Damn Choir rocked the audience's senses with differentiating tempos of happy-go-lucky feel (with the tambourine adding a touch a lively, toe-tappin' beat) to downtempo rhythms and upbeat energy. There was even a moment when the band performed an impromptu jam while switching between guitars to keep fans and audience wrapped inside the organic-ness of their folk vibe.

Yet, the intensity wasn't only reserved for the music, blogspot readers, but was also heard within the vocals too. It seemed we were meant to ride this emotional wave of feelings as taken straight from the songwriter's heart and  placed throughout each of The Damn's lyrics. It was amazing of what one could feel from their music and words combined within such intensity. For example, check out the new song - Creatures of Habit in which Gordon grabbed the heartstrings with an outpour of emotions behind his strong falsetto voice while the upbeat music nicely matches the mood and tone of the song. Or listen to Nowhere, where it was directly the opposite. Though in a slight downtempo rhythm, SouthSide enjoyed the liveliness of this particular song but more importantly it was to highlight the strengeth of Gordon's falsetto voice not the music (in her opinion) ...and especially liking the acapella harmonies towards the end. This reviewer truly felt him and his emotional side during another particular song in which he pleaded "...did I mention I'm falling in love with you..." yet during Devil's Frown you could still hear (and feel) his vocal intensity of angst and dynamic tone even while rockin' to the band's toe-tappin' energy and sound. And The Damn, without the intense tone, performed a vividly image-laiden ballad to which Gordon's voice pops to life amidst the soothing melodic lull of the bass cello while the rest of the band takes the harmony route inside the music.

01 Oct 12

Hey, blogspot readers, fall has certainly arrived. And with that brings touring bands rockin' the local scene around town. Tonight was no exception at Elbo Room where Fairhaven (from Providence, RI) made a special detour as part of their Plan A tour to entertain the Monday night regulars (while competing against Bears football) featuring performances of semi-acoustic and piano pop/alternative rock music within an  hour-long set. SouthSide in her research about this trio has been receiving buzz from music critics in which they are being compared to as"...one of the top up an coming bands" to  "Coldplay meets Kings of Leon" for their "...polished songwriting and catchy vocals..." They have shared the stage with other national acts like Neon Trees, OK Go, The Doobie Brothers and many others as well as can be heard on the airwaves on New England radio stations. Recently, they released their second album - Plan A, a follow up to their debut titled Origins.

And judging from the audience (in between spectacular Bear plays on the big screen) and their warm reception to Fairhaven's live semi-acoustic performance, SouthSide highly recommends checking out this band at their next show (visit http://www.fairhavenband.com for tour dates and details). To say, this reviewer was floored by everything she had read (as well as heard off their http://www.reverbnation.com/fairhavenband page) would be a general understatement, blogspot readers. Words cannot begin to describe how the combination of harmonizing vocals (by Alan on guitar, Trevor on piano and Brian on drums) and powerful yet dynamic piano-driven rhythms fused together into one moving music floetry made this reviewer feel and reacted to such heartfelt lyrics and sound. It was simply amazing as well as refreshing to hear clear and crisp songwriting that was truly spoken from the heart and soul of its creator. You could literally feel the energy rising and then crescending into one fierce momentum of energy during Fairhaven's semi-acoustic version of Firefly. SouthSide liked how the trio of vocal harmonies brought to life the powerful meaning behind the words thus nicely matching the intensity and power of the music composed around them.

Or check out the band's song Hollow, blogspot readers, it was - in one word - breathtaking. Both music and lyrics seem to pop continuously throughout amidst the melodic rhythms and tone. Even with the piano being not the central focus of Fairhaven's sound, this trio still managed to make their acoustic sound pop vibrantly to match the vocals and music intensity under one accord especially during one particular song labeled as "a work in progress" but to SouthSide's ear's it had the sense of being the band's next hit. They knew how and when to bring the energy to the ears for dramatic emphasis as well as when to bring the intensity down to a calm to numb the heartfelt senses and/or bring you to tears. If this reviewer didn't know any better, there's a certain kind of magic within Fairhaven's music to which some (like local guys Makeshift Prodigy, The Loneliest Monk and a couple of others) can tap into and move the depths of your soul ...to actually feel or be inspired from what you've heard ...very heartfelt yet emotionally expressive.

That's what SouthSide left with after seeing Fairhaven's performance, blogspot readers. If you don't believe her, listen to the band's cover version of Beatles' Oh! Darling or Elton John's Rocket Man and not be moved by the strong vocals being poured into the microphone. They just might make you cry a little...

10 Apr 12

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide recently experienced a unique performance which combined her love for the classics and rock-n-roll at Double Door. Inside this hipster venue (located in the heart of Wicker Park), fans crowded the main floor for the best spot to see Rasputina (NY) rock the stage after a lively opening set by Daniel Knox.

This reviewer highly suggests checking out the classically infused, cello-driven music amidst a Victorian Age tone and essence presented by the trio known as Rasputina. And, blogspot readers, you don't have to be a fan of classical music (i.e. Bach, Shubert, Mozart, et al) to enjoy the electrifying intense sound created by the duo cellos (accompanied with a mini drum kit to add some percussion rhythms when needed). Despite having that classical sound, it was still rock music due to the electified cello riffs which added an aggressive, razor-sharp edge to the soothing clips and staccatos heard throughout Rasputina's headlining set. Besides the lovely rockin' music, Rasputina also boasted a trio of the harmonizing vocals on lyrics which had this reviewer thinking she was at the Lyric (Opera House) or Symphony Center rather than Double Door. The angelic tone popped the Victorian style verses to life emitting such heartfelt emotions whether within a calming yet intense classical rhythm, a haunting ballad or dark semi-apocalyptic tone. You would be amazed, blogspot readers, how this classical-infused rock music kept this crowd energetically hyped (especially one fan who constantly requested a particular song until Rasputina obliged) when performing songs such as Holocaust of Giants, Cage in a Cave, and Saline the Salt Lake Queen. This reviewer enjoyed the sweeping melodies (with a moment of bluegrass or organic/Native sound) intertwining with the electric rhythms with some thunderous percussion sound woven inside time to time ...it was too beautiful that she had to stop wrting in order to bask in the awe-inspiring glow. There was passion and fire not only heard but felt, blogspot readers. Though there was classical essence deep inside this special recital performance, Rasputina did excite the crowd with their rockin' cover of Cheap Trick's I Want You To Want Me. SouthSide has heard rock covers of this particular song before but never done with classical tone and gritty electric cello riffs that had many singing along with the ladies.
