CD review

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide finally took some time away from the venues and bands for a couple of days of relaxation and clearing the mail clutter of new CDs that arrived in the mail. She highly recommends the following selections as noteworthy stocking stuffers or something to enhance your personal collection this holiday season.

Dying & Falling

This 13 track (11 tracks with 2 bonus remix tracks of The Shake and Swimmers Can Drown) literally rocked this reviewer's ears even after recently attending this band's live taping at JBTV studios in Chicago. Opening with the fast pace and speed of danceable dark electronica/industrial (as featured in Swimmers Can Drown) that's coupled with the intensity of lead vocalist, Brittany, to which smooths out the raw music edginess by adding a touch of feminie sexuality and fiery passion as well as dynamic vocals, it's not too hard to find a song or two where you'll find yourself strutting some powerful dance moves on the floor at the next Nocturna, blogspot readers, especially when listening to songs like Ammunition (track 3) and Worth the Wait (track 4). What's not included in this album (but she wishes it was) was the heart-wrenching War To Win that was featured during i:Scintilla's live JBTV taping. According to Brittany, this particular song is featured in an upcoming documentary soundtrack. SouthSide highly recommends checking out the title track (#6) where the band adds a touch of dubstep/dreampop to their haunting electronica/industrial music and the vocals. Though projected in a slight downtempo groove, this reviewer enjoyed the rhythms floetry before moving quickly to the upbeat dark electronica of Face the Kill (track 7). Want to really hear how dynamic and powerful Brittany's vocals can be, blogspot readers? Then listen to The Shake (track 8) in this band takes a melodramatic turn for a ballad that features piano (piano/string arrangement by Robert Mantz)-cello (by Kitty Thompson) driven production sound which beautifully spotlight this vocalist and her voice. Here she shines the most, in SouthSide's honest opinion, sans the industrial edge bringing out more of the soulful gusto of heart-wrenching emotions to the lyrics within the eclectic mix of electronica and orchestrations that you will literally feel (as well as hear). Loved the haunting string ending to this particular song. And while listening to this CD, take a few moments to admire the lovely yet dark artwork designed by Brittany for i:Scintilla's album cover.

Release 3: Brides/Canoe
Soccer Mom
http://www.facebook.com/soccermom

Not what SouthSide was expecting when receiving this two-track CD from her friends at 100m Records yet she's glad it was a totally unexpected experience for her. Might sound confusing, blogspot readers, but it was the unexpectedness by this Boston band in which this reviewer thinks Soccer Mom's going for ...among other thing like not being able to physically categorize their uniquely eclectic music and sound. For example, check out track 1 - A Canoe Shy where this band features a harsh sounding 80s Brit pop/rock influence and sound especially on the vocals that's meant to be played and heard LOUD! Definitely crank up the volume ...go ahead and scare your neighbors while basking in the rawness of the jamming guitar riffs and percussion rhythms blasting your ears away. If that the band's intention at the time of recording, they thoroughly have succeeded in this task, blogspot readers. Meanwhile track 2 - Brides opening with a repeated calming tribal beat before shocking the system with a blaring blast of guitars and drums before finally moving into the song. As SouthSide mentioned earlier, it's hard to categorize this band since they do draw from a lot of genres and influences especially during this particular song. You will hear LOUD electric guitar rock, 80s pop/punk rock and more that's entirely meshed into a seemingly and confusing chaotic mess as the loudness of the music overshadows the vocals a bit. Yet once again, this reviewer has the distinct feeling this song was designed that way to get your head banging to the beat, blogspot readers.

evolve or die
V Is For Villains
http://www.visforvillains.com

Beware, blogspot readers, Villains have taken control of their minion scene ...especially here in Chicago! It's not even a passing fad either. This band is here to stay now that they have (finally) released a full album in between making appearances at local anime shows to rockin' out Steampunk festivals (near and far). Besides villainizing venues like Reggie's Rock Club, House of Blues (Chicago), and Metro, this band also features a merch which goes beyond the standard buttons and stickers ...they have trading cards, masks and more to complete your acceptance of their villainous control over you. Even SouthSide ...er rather Eva Trixx has had the extreme pleasure of interving the master Villain himself of V Is For Villains, Mr. Agitator in two separate interviews. Yet now that this band of musical villains have a full-length CD declaring their villainy intentions on the world titled Evolve or Die, it's time to pick a side, blogspot readers - do you evolve with the band or die? This CD features a sexually-charged intensity within its opening song Just A Sinner in which Mr. Agitator must bow to the whim of the femimine wiles  and power of Veronica Jade that he can never escape from as well as two villain anthems - Rise Above (track 3) and the title track (#9), where all villains are called to unite and heed to the call of their villainous master for world domination! Resisting will be futile ...simply just join them while they take your listening ears down a dark road of face pace electronica/steampunk/industrial rock music. Tracks flow right into each other without pausing for a moment's breath which is almost like attending one of Villains' shows except there's no Pink Elephants (a Midnight Minion, i.e. V Is For Villains fan, favorite) on the album. Still there's a love (villain-style) ballad - track 8 The Black Swan Love Song (one of SouthSide's personal favorite). Yes, villains do have emotions, blogspot reades, and can love but that love can also lead to heartache and pain. Plus check out the instrumental March of the Villains and feel the thunderous orchestrations of the minion army of many overtaking the world ...sadly it's a short track. Perhaps there will be a Part II featured in the next V Is For Villains album.

One final note, check out the fascinating artwork done by Carlos Santiago - The Headmaster of all Villains as well as manager and more for the band.

17 Mar 12

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's partyin' with the leprechauns (again) tonight! After spending part of the day at the "new" Logan Theatre (highly recommended for your cinema enjoyment and fun at a reasonable ticket price), it was time for this reviewer to rock out her St. Paddy's night. And once again, she celebrated with friends at Elbo Room. Yet, this St. Paddy's party wasn't your oridinary Irish celebration that was rockin' this popular Lakeview venue ...this party featured performances by well-known artists - 311, No Doubt and Weezer. Well ...not actually the real ones, blogspot readers. Just three local bands representing them as Homebrew, Don't Speak and Our Name Is Jonas to entertain the crowded basement lounge with lively tribute versions of songs made famous by their original namesakes.

Now, normally, blogspot readers, SouthSide doesn't cover tribute bands as part of her On The Town blog repetoire. However, just for tonight's celebration, she made the exception recommending the following two tribute bands for the way both energized and excited the audience.

Though arriving mid way through the set, this reviewer did catch the final ten minutes or so of Homebrew thoroughly enjoying the energy from the lyrical hiphop/reggae/rock fusion. There were many pockets of excitement amongst the crowd whenever the band turned up the heat on the guitar rhythms or zipped through the fast-paced lyrical floetry. The momentum was so highly infectious that even sound guy Brian Bender (also of The Hot Sauce Committee) got a little sauced from the rockin' music especially during the closing number Homebrew (where the tribute band took its namesake). Each member individually as well as collectively tore down the stage, blogspot readers, with such fierceness and intensity ...plenty of energy that everyone was literally feeling what Homebrew was vibin'. And as an added bonus, the guys electrified the stage with a teaser of traditional Irish music. Visit Homebrew at http://www.facebook.com/homebrew311.

The same could be said of the Weezer tribute band - Our Name Is Jonas, blogspot readers. Here's another local tribute band (Chicago's ONLY Weezer tribute band) that rocked the stage under intense energy while performing such fan favorites Beverly Hills, Troublemaker, and their namesake - My Name Is Jonas (which brought the crowd feverishly to life). Jonas did more than just sing the Weezer songs (without trying to vocally sound like the original artists) but the group put their own spin and fun to collectively dress up their headlining performance. This essentially created the energy throughout their stage presentation as Weezer. From matching clothing ensemble (SouthSide loved the sparkly glasses with the green lights) to engaging the crowd every minute, there wasn't a single moment where the energy had suddenly dulled or found lacking, blogspot readers. You could hear the Weezer fans singing along with Jonas (as heard during Ass Wipe [Parody of Hashpipe]) as well as groovin' to the upbeat tempo while performing Keep Fishing. Visit Our Name Is Jonas at http://www.facebook.com/weezertribute.

10 Dec 11

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide ends her weekend by rockin' with the so-called "1%"! She's went upscale (sort of) Saturday while at River North's tri-level nightspot, LaSalle Power Company to rock with gothic poets aching for love (The Walking Shadows) and social rockers with a focus (Social Focus). Also featured during this swizzlesteve.com show was Polarcode (http://www.polarcodemusic.com) and Furious Frank (http://www.furiousfrank.net).

This reviewer recommends checking out this eclectic-sounding local band that combined one of the most weirdest music/genre mesh ever heard. And she's not being harsh in her description about Furious Frank, blogspot readers. This was one band with a set up that included a lively horn section (trumpet and trombone), guitars (bass, electric, mandolin, acoustic), keyboards and drums thus producing an energizing sound mix from folk to gyspy to Mexi-Americana-punk (try saying that fast three times) and more. Furious had a rhythmic tempo that got thisr reviewer's toes tappin' to their selected tunes featuring an Irish folk amidst a country/western feel for one song about Chicago and a Latin-flavor inspired Christmas tune with Czech lyrics. Meanwhile with Polarcode, SouthSide and friends (Ryan of Sutured Psyche and his friend) had a mixed reaction about this melodramatic rock band. This reviewer at first liked the energy and momentum that wafted throughout the third floor venue exciting the audience ...nearly drowning out the club scene downstairs happening on the second floor. However, somewhere in the middle of the set, that excitement, music and momentum was seriously replaced by dullness and boredom which gradually caused lost interest from its audience. Even SouthSide was losing interest due to the many back to back power ballads filling up their performance time that didn't have more rousing rock songs in between. That was Polarcode's main problem, blogspot readers, besides the unique stage set up that included a bass-keyboard melody combination and percussions. The music needed electric riffs to balance out the rhythms and put more powerful umph into the ballads. This reviewer suggests the band ease up a little on the "melo" part - you have that well taken care of and add more rock (electric riffs) into the drama to lift certain songs (like Deal Breaker) out of its moody mode. Polarcode can still be melodramatic while powerfully engaging its audience and fanbase more.

SouthSide must warn you - this is not your average Shakespeare love sonnet paired with with music, blogspot readers. The famous author of tragedies, comedies, et al probably wouldn't have foreseen dark lovelorn poetry/lyrics coupled with symphonic/rock music from a band like The Walking Shadows. This local band on the rise featured heartwrenching words (the kind that pricks from a sticky rose thorn), emotionally intense guitar riffs and dark symphonic electronica (off the keyboard set up) rolled into one exciting set. You're meant to feel besides hear the music and words, blogspot readers. Plus both (at the same time) can have that intensity to truly bring a few tears to the eyes as well as the heart upon feeling that emotional essence. After finally seeing a full performance, yes, The Walking Shadows can get overly melodramatic if that was the band's intention but truly it's not. There's the rock side to this band which keeps it from heading down that route. SouthSide enjoyed how the guitars add the right amount of intensity to balance out the symphonic sound and to also energize (as well as electrify) the moody music thus receiving the best of both genres at once. For example, check out Shadows' Crusader in which the guitar rock sound took front and center stage over the electronica keyboard rhythms (with enough symphonic melody to be heard). That's okay since it spotlighted Craig (front man on guitar) and his dynamic falsetto style within this particular song before blasting the ears with a hot instrumental bridge of intense music that featured twitterpating riffs and rhythms ...and a John drum solo too. Even while taking that said energy down a notch or two, one can still appreciate the emotional pain and heartache intricately woven inside the lyrics as Craig sings and Mark (his twin brother on keyboards/piano) backs him with the same emotional sentiments only musically. There's no other way to describe how dark emotions full of pain, heartache, etc was beautifully expressed tonight via The Walking Shadows ...even The Bard himself would definitely approve especially after listening to The Devil You Never Name (hearfelt romanticism in a dark yet intense way that deeply cuts like a razor sharp knife), Bullet Holes In Our Hearts (what can SouthSide say - we kill the one we love everyday), or Howl At The Moon (a bluesy switch that certainly surprised this reviewer which rocked down the stage) a couple of times. This reviewer highly recommends introducing yourself to the new style of Bard with The Walking Shadows at their next performance in 2012, blogspot readers. For more information about this band, visit http://www.thewalkingshadows.com or on Facebook.

Headlining this rockin' show was SouthSide's other good friend, Social Focus who were debutting a new member to the band - Alex on drums. And what a noticeable difference from last time to tonight, blogspot readers! Even after a long hiatus from the local scene and stage, this band totally bursted into their set with such a fierce force of music and presence that it blew this reviwer away. She had never seen them take to the stage like this before ...it was an energizing vibe and momentum in which the audience was immediately sucked into their socially focused zone. Yes, the band was feeling it too especially as new member pumped them with exuberant percussion rhythm and youthful energy song after song. Adam, front man on vocals, was definitely rockin' the stage as well with more charismatic persona and presence thus pumping more vocal powress into the lyrics when Social Focus opened with Classical Man and What Are You Waiting For. It was nice to see him releasing his inner vocal demons tonight, blogspot readers, that the lyrics popped to life under that fierce vocal fire. Plus, SouthSide literally could see the energy flowing from the band's music as each member filled it with such instensity from the riffs to rhythms. For example, during Safe Word, this reviewer enjoyed how Social capitialized on the intense sound heard off the guitar riffs and Alex's drumming which had front man Adam really releasing some fiery spite into the microphone (which is usually a good lead-in to Merry-Go-Down but not heard tonight). However besides debutting a new member, Social also featured not just one but three new songs (perhaps a new album coming soon?) which included a ballad, By Your Side. The other two, Occupy Yourself and Solitaire, brought something new to the band's usual music and sound (as if they truly had one, blogspot readers), but fans will like the direction they're gradually moving towards that features more subtle rhythms and more of a harder guitar rock sound ...less powerpop rock in both songs. Though Solitaire did start off a little slow but not to worry the tempo did pick up its pace while highlighting Adam's dynamic voice before wowing the ears with the instrumental bridge. It was a little leaning towards the power ballad side (not much) ...still it had enough intense momentum to keep a few fans rockin' to the music. The song just might succede SouthSide's current favorite (Merry-Go-Down) as the new song featured on her iPod rotation list. She does suggest to Social on roughing out the edges to By Your Side - it's a stong yet powerful ballad but the bass was a little overpowering off the monitors when the band was in the downtempo pace. She found this particular song easy-listening on the contemporary side but still powerful enough not to be categorized as "melodramatic". Now a word about Alex - Social Focus, keep him! This drummer, though with the band a short time, naturally immersed himself right into the band's sound, music and style ...easily setting the tone and atmoshphere and never missing one excitable beat throughout the show. If the band was looking for that youthful energy to perk up their music, then they certainly found it with Alex. SouthSide looks forward to seeing more shows like this one, blogspot readers from Social Focus in 2012. For more information, visit http://www.socialfocusmusic.com or on Facebook.

29 Mar 12

Hey, blogspot readers, let's go clubbin'! Tonight, SouthSide's hitting the club circuit within the fashionable River North area to check out three rockin' band at Vision Nightclub. Located inside Excalibur (oh what fond and fun memories dancing there), this club hosted another Live In The Dome showcase which features local music every Thursday night with drink specials. This week's Dome lineup included locals The Lucky Dutch and Apollo House with Sons of the West (Ohio) opening. Contact Phil Rizzo at phil@visionnightclub.com if you would like to get your band featured during the next Live In The Dome showcase.

SouthSide recommends checking The Lucky Dutch at their next performance that featured a smokin' hot mix of soulful R&B and Blues sound amidst an electrifying guitar rock and energetic keyboard rhtyhms. This reviewer liked the contrasting vocals demonstrated by guitarist Nathan (deep soulful falsettos that melted the microphone) and keyboardist Claire (fiery spirit and expressive body language). However, SouthSide noted that Claire's vocals could have used more dynamic volume to be vividly heard about the band's momentous sound especially while also doing backing vocals to Nathan. Still, Dutch had this cool floetry persona going whenever amidst their eclectic music mesh that sometimes truly brought upon the electrified guitar riff power during an upbeat tempo. But on the flipside, they turned Vision into a smoky Blues club when creating that steamy atmosphere to wrap the audience inside the intense sound while in the instrumental bridge, blogspot readers. This band gave its audience plenty of chills and thrills from start to finish full of riveting energy which rocked the club til the very last note. For more information about The Lucky Dutch, visit the band on its Facebook page.

SouthSide also recommends getting to know her new friend, Apollo House at their next show (happening April 7 at Tonic Room), blogspot readers, for the band's electrifying, heart-pounding rush of guitar rock music and sound. It was pure a hardcore rush and homage of 70s guitar rock bands like Cream, Led Zeppelin (as heard during the opening song - Medicine Head), Guess Who and a little Grand Funk Railroad meshed somewhere inside the bluesy riffs. Apollo totally captured and honed into their influence vibe quite well to get your head banging to the music's intensity (Heartbreaker) ...and the bridge - that's where the music actually does all of the speaking for the band. There were bursts of energy everywhere amidst the twitterpating riffs especially when chords began zig zagging (during Not Afraid) to which one could literally feel the electrified vibrations coursing in the veins as Apollo pulls you deeper into that psychedelia rock groove (Stray). And besides boosting hot rockin' music, Joe (front man on guitars) fired up the audience with his strong dynamic falsetto voice to vividly match his band's electrified sound. There wasn't a moment when you didn't feel that emotional angst being poured over the microphone, blogspot readers, or that heartache especially during Sweet Deceit when he hit that high falsetto note. Even though the band doesn't often play this song live (and SouthSide says they should), Apollo's electric blues truly spotlighted how deep Joe's vocal emotion range could go throughout even while the riffs match his tone inside a downtempo rhythm. For more information about Apollo House, visit the band at http://www.apollohouse.bandcamp.com or on their Facebook page.

This band opened this edition of Live In The Dome with what bassist Nick called "...gut-punching whiskey teardrop rock...", blogspot readers, amidst some "...Blues, soul..." (front man Anthony) and "...hard pop..." (drummer Gregg). SouthSide recommends getting to know her new friend Sons Of The West at their next performance (with a couple happening in May at Lincoln Hall and in St. Charles). What attracted this reviewer to the band was the trio's electric energy which set the stage ablazed with rockin' twitterpating riffs and upswing rhythmic sound. At times there was an intense rush of highly charged music wafting throughout the club. On the flipside, Sons also had this mellow side to their electric blues in which brought out just more than the romanticism heard within the lyrics and a soulful sound but also emotional fury deep inside front man Anthony's falsetto. During the Sons' cover of the Bill Withers classice Ain't No Sunshine, SouthSide was deeply moved by Anthony's emotional angst vividly heard as he sung especially while doing the famous "I know I know" line where he truly poured out the heartache. Anthony suggested listening to the band's earliest songs - Tennesse Dirt or Black Blood because "...I feel they show how the band came to be and ...can hear the direction we are going..." SouthSide enjoyed Black Blood's heart-pounding blues/rock sound in which Anthony rocked the mic with his unique combination of raw heartfelt vocals and the band had the energy to match him note for note. This trio definitely produced momentous sound of electrifying rock music with very little effort, blogspot readers. According to Anthony as he revealed the secret to what brings fans back to their show, "...[we're] always putting everything we have into every show and making sure that the performance can connect with people..." Bassist Nick agreed adding "...it has to do with stuff we do off stage too. Just making connections and friendships with everyone you can and generally being good, reliable, consistent person makes doing promotional stuff way easier..." Coming to Chicago via Columbus, Ohio, SouthSide asked the band for their thoughts about the local scene there. Anthony replied saying "...the music scene in Columbus feels more cohesive..." compared to Chicago's "...and it's a lot friendlier to underage people with more underage show...There's a lot more networking and there's a strong connection between bands..." Meanwhile Nick said the scene in Columbus is smaller but here in Chicago "...[the] amount of venues and musicians out there are really provides a lot more opportunities to play and meet people...it's easier to carve out your own individual identity as a band in Chicago..." For more information about Sons Of The West, visit them at http://www.sonsofthewest.bandcamp.com or on their Facebook page.
