Hey, blogspot readers, let's get honey-ized!

That's what happened to SouthSide when she ventured deep within Wrigleyville to see her new friend, Honey & the 45s rock the stage at Cubby Bear recently. This local band, known for its "...sexy ...fun ...in your face ...original ...groovy..." sound, featured a whole lot of feminine hotness and a solid variety of music fusion ranging from soul/R&B to Chicago Blues and some country/rockabilly ...under one excitable performance that had many dancing in front of the stage. According to the band, it's what keeps their fans coming back for more of that honey-ized music as well as their stage presence. And who is Honey? Well, let's just say every band member is Honey.

This reviewer had a fun time groovin' to the funky vibe of this multi-talented band especially warming up the crowd with their "I Got Your Honey" Intro before moving quickly into their fun set. She especially enjoyed the hot rhythmic soul and energy that each member brought to the stage, blogspot readers, which also brought out the steamy sexual heat from Kristina and Kim when they did their sexy dance moves. Never seen so many guys (and ladies, too) get quite interested in a band while they performed "Got the Need". Blogpot readers should check out this particular song on their YouTube page because it features not only the band but a wide range of artistic performers from acrobats to dancers and more. It's part of Honey's policy of showcasing talent and promoting artistic awareness to others.

Photo0524

SouthSide also highly suggests checking out Honey's "Got The Need" and "End of Love" where Kristina (while not behind the guitar) truly pours on the sexuality and expressive body language with her dance moves as the rest of the band matches her vocal tone within this rather upbeat soulful sound ...or check out the Chicago blues style in "Not Whatcha Do" where the Honey added a touch of dirty guitar riffs to make the music sound a little sultry and and steamy in which Kristina and Kim shined amidst the rawness heard in their voices popping the lyrics to life. Also check out Honey's country/rockabilly with a dixieland jive, blogspot readers, during "Train's Gonna Go" when this band electrified the stage with such fun energy that many around SouthSide were kicking up their heels and having a hoedown near the stage before taking that same energy down for a bit for a gritty rockabilly/Blues fusion for Lolita with Concert. And to cap off this set was a little homage to James Brown and his hit song "I Feel Good"  that really had Cubby Bear jumpin' to the legendary soul man's funky R&B/soul sound.

Photo0529

Overall, blogspot readers, it was an awesome performance rockin' with Honey & the 45s. Their usage of blending/meshing different genres for their songs did have this Cubby Bear crowd jumpin', jivin' and asking for one more song at the end in order to keep this party going all night long. Be prepared to find yourself swinging to the infectious tempo and probably copying a few of those sexy dance moves too while enjoying the vibrant feel of the upbeat tempo. Honey & the 45s not only made this set fun and enjoyable ...but incredibly hot and steamy. The band would like everyone to know "...we love LIKES ...like us on Facebook..." Also visit them on their main site, http://www.honeyandthe45s.com, as well as buy their album The Need.

Yelp's Elemental Experience

Come with SouthSide and experience the four elements of life like you have never before...

Recently, this reviewer took a much needed break away from the music scene for a fun evening basking within the dazzling glow of club lights and music with other Yelpers at YELP's Elemental Experience. Housed inside the newly renovated Castle (formerly known as Excalibur), this River North nightclub offered its participants an unique, mind-bending event which inspired as well as tantalized the senses. Each part of the Castle's four clubs represented the basic elements of life - the main floor was Earth, club Palladium (upstairs) was the perfectly named Wind, club Sanctuary was the ruby hot Fire and the pub underneath was relaxing Water.

Upon her arrival, SouthSide began her journey with Earth by sampling of Peckish's dried-frozen veggie snacks. Now, it may sound difficult to wrap your mind inside the concept of eating a frozen mixture of broccoli and other lentils as a snack but to this reviewer it was simply like popping a few kernels of popcorn into her mouth. She even took some home for the test audience to try ...and she couldn't stop eating the rest of the tiny sample! Next in her journey, she tried some Southside polish pizza (that consisted of kielbasa sausage, applewood smoked bacon and a hint of sauerkraut mixed with their secret sweet sauce), blogspot readers from Chicago Pizza Tours. In one word - yummilicious! You didn't really taste the sauerkraut in the pizza until it reaches the back of your throat ...and plus that pizza sauce gives it that sweet taste instead of that harsh sour cabbage odor. She completed her journey with other Yelpers on this floor at Koi for a delicious sample of Asian noodles (with peanut sauce and a hint of cilantro) with some California maki sushi rolls (with fresh mango and drizzled dressing) and vegan macaroni and cheese. Don't knock the vegan mac and cheese, blogspot readers, until you taste how creamy and yummy it was. Even SouthSide was fooled because it simply tasted like her mother's mac and cheese! Plus for live entertainment, there was a car racing video game and DJ spinning lively dance/club mixes.

Leaving Earth, she climbed up the steps to venture into the exciting element of Wind where most of the Yelpers congregated during the event because it featured more than just delicious samples of food and DJ, there was a seductive fire dancer and flash photo-taking. Here, this reviewer sampled more Asian dishes, sweets by Jaafer Sweets, some Filipino pork egg rolls and bihon by Isla, and some Mongolian soup. This reviewer did take a jab at her boxing skills with Reach Boxing Chicago and some exercises on the second level to work off the food eaten thus far. And to cool off a bit, she sampled some Pomegranate and (Not so) Sweet teas from Honest Tea. Both were good, blogspot readers, but she liked the (Not so) Sweet tea better. She then went to tried some sweet, tangy and a little spicy pulled-pork from the team of Porkchop and some more veggies (with some humus dip - first time trying it too) to balance out her tour of Wind before going back downstairs to visit the Fire room.  It was somewhat steamy and a little warm inside this room when she entered the ruby red room where the Fireball Whiskey and Four Loco girls greeted visitors. Here under this red glow, there was more pizza try and plenty of floor space to dance to the room's DJ spinning from the balcony.

By now, SouthSide took a quick breather to meet two organizations in the Earth room that were being featured by Yelp during this event. Delete Blood Cancer was there to inform participants about their fight against blood cancer in which you can register as a potential bone marrow donor, blogspot readers. This organization globally works to fight this disease with families, communities and organizations to recruit more donors for patients in need. As a donor, you would be helping others have a second chance at life ...and it's easy and quite painless to do. All you have to do is register online. For more details or to register, visit http://www.deletebloodcancer.org. Also SouthSide met a representative from the Academy for Global Citizenship (located near 47th and Cicero) in which she was informing interested Yelpers about the school and their upcoming fundraising event. This school uses an innovative and holistic approach towards the education process by fostering systemic change and inspiring different ways society teaches students. Currently Kindergarten through 5th grade (will have start the middle school grade next school year), this school aims to show their students that the world is larger than where they live and provides organic lunches too. And there's a way to get involved with this school, blogspot readers, by attending their Chef's Playground that's happening on Thursday, May 16th. 14 legendary and famous chefs like Rick Bayless, Paul Kahan of Avec, Bill Kim of BellyQ, Jose Garces of Mercat and more will be doing to their unique take on school lunches to which participants will have a chance to sample throughout the night. The event will take place at Terzo Piano at the Modern Art Wing of the Art Institute of Chicago. For more information and tickets, visit http://www.accchicago.org/chefsplayground.

While in the Earth room again, this reviewer sampled more delicious eats from the Castle kitchen and highly suggests munching on the fat onion rings and juicy burgers served with cole slaw on the bun. These were the most sought after munchies by most of the Yelpers. Also she suggests trying a cool glass of Black Cherry Honey Sweet wine from Oliver Winery, blogspot readers. Then, lastly before saying "good night" to Castle, SouthSide went under the sea to spend a few moments in the Water element to relax like the many others who were sitting at the high tables or booths. Unlike the other three rooms within this vast nightclub, the underground pub/restaurant is mostly designed for friendly get-togethers without having the noise of the clubs above. You can either relax at the bar or enjoy a game (or two) pool on one of four tables.  Also while down there, view the rock memorabilia displayed along the walls from a photo of Lady Gaga to a cool photo of Jimi Hendrix rightly placed near the Women's restroom.

Overall, the event was smashing time. You should check out Castle which stays open until 5a Friday and Saturday. For more information, visit http://www.castlechicago.com.

"...let's give it to the girls ...no, they don't like being told what to do..." ~ Blane Fonda

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's rockin' her weekend around town with a stop at the legendary venue well hidden inside an industrial/manufacturing park. The Hideout Inn - a perfect name for this quaint inn-like bar and it's "guarded" location, was the place to be during the busy North Coast Fest affair to catch the dream pop/electronica sounds of Panda Riot featuring that 80s pop-inspired band Blane Fonda as headliner. And as an extra bonus guest - SouthSide caught a glimpse of the famous Burrito/Tamale guy selling his delicious food to the Hideout patrons!

This reviewer arrived in time to catch the remaining performance of Panda Riot as the band enthralled its captive audience with a tribute to REM titled REM, blogspot readers. This electronica/dream pop band has a way enticing the ears with such flowing, dreamy soundwave featuring three guitars, a simplistic drum set up (2 toms and some cymbals) and electronic sound machine (to create dream-esque pop sound). Toss in the soft yet dynamic vocals by guitarist Rebecca and you have one powerful combination which could lead to a mindblowing experience from the melodic tone of Panda's music. SouthSide enjoyed hearing (as well as feeling) the floetry while amidst the downtempo groove and aria-like voice enticing the ears during songs such as Golden Age and Forest which might have you thinking Kate Bush at time. There will be times when the music alone has the tendency of making you move along to the rhythmic vibe like during Camden where the tempo and music was the back focus so Rebecca's voice could have that spotlight focus. If you truly want to enjoy music like this, blogspot readers, SouthSide highly suggests closing your eyes and letting your ears be your guide especially when Panda's performing Black Pyramids ...thus thoroughly hearing the beauty and complexity of each note played within the melodically pleasing music and the poetic lyrics. For more information about Panda Riot, visit http://www.pandariot.com.

Now it's time for something more eclectic as well as profoundly animalistic and obscure besides rockin', blogspot readers. Something that was totally a direct opposite of the opening band as Blane Fonda kicked off its headlining performance with a hot vibrant bang of 80s pop-inspired/alternative music to which caused the venue of The Hideout Inn to instantly swell with fans. More about their fans in a minute. What makes this band a little obscure and (sometimes) over the top (in a good way)? Well, let's start off with Blane's front man, Mark, on vocals. He must have been feeling his animal spirit tonight, blogspot readers, because he spent the majority of Blane's performance strutting and dancing around (in his little area) on stage with a wolf pelt on his head while draped with a some sort of tribal blanket or covering. SouthSide can only surmise that through these two wrappings he was able to channel that fiery spirit felt and seen during each song performed like Modern Woman or Opportunity Rocks. Yet there's also a heartfelt side to Mark and his animal spirit in which he poured out the raw emotions as a man deeply in pain especially during Fess Up, Face Down  and Salacious Love. Then while listening to Mark, be sure to check out the band behind the man, blogspot readers. You will note that each song has it's own distinct personality and music flavor ...sometimes blended to get you moving wildly to the rhythmic 80s pop vibe. There were moments when SouthSide heard a unique combination of disco/pop before quickly moving to something spicy and Latin-inspired (via off the trumpet) or 80s-inspired dance pop sound. Even though pushing the eclectic boundary with their sound, SouthSide found Blane to be on the cutting edge of not trying to imitate the 80s but creating their own sound that would fit within that era of music. And with music like this, do expect their fans to react crazily with their dancing motion. That's putting it very mildly too. Yet, all around this reviewer, there were times in which Blane's fans had that strong urge to dance and groove along with the band like they did during Modern Woman or shout their favorite curse word. This reviewer highly suggests rockin' along with Blane Fonda at their next scheduled show but in the meantime, visit http://www.blanefonda.com for music and other wacky musings by this local band.

01 Sept 13 - North Coast Music Fest: Day 3

Well, blogspot readers, all good things must come to end. What started off as a quite whimper is now going out with one huge exploding BANG!

It's Day 3 of North Coast Music Festival and the steamy hot weather doesn't deter anyone away because tonight's headliners - Wu Tang Clan and local guys  JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound were poised to leave everyone who came today with lasting memories until next year. Today's agenda for SouthSide included branching out further as well as around Union Park to soak up the many sights and sounds of North Coast Music Festival instead of staying to one particular area, blogspot readers. The music scene here was an eclectic mix of everything - from rap/hip hop to world fusion/reggae/ska and instrumental rock. There was even some Nawlins style Jazz rockin' a stage too! If you wanted to party to EDM again - this festival had it. Whatever your music taste was today, North Coast had it for you. However due to the extreme hot temps, this reviewer noticed how many spent Day 3 mostly in the shade (wherever it was possible) enjoying the cool breeze blowing by and/or stayed hydrated (too many long lines at the watering fountains!).

Upon arriving early that afternoon, Psalm One & Rhyme School was already in the middle of her act spilling a bit of knowledge to the attentive crowd over at the Dos Eqquis stage meanwhile over at The Last Stand stage, there was another crowd grooving to the funky rhythms of world fusion/ska by Ojo De Buey. While waiting for her friends The Coop to begin their North Coast performance, SouthSide viewed the artwork and the artists at work at the Reader Living Art Gallery that was located at the baseball field. Then, it was finally time to groove to the trippy experimental rock fusion by The Coop (http://www.thecoop.net), blogspot readers! SouthSide highly recommends checking out this local band that blends the elements of modern jazz rhythms with electrifying sparks of guitar rock and cosmic floetry of digital electronica and keyboards. When hearing how these different elements wonderfully meld together as the band instrumentally jams on stage, it might have you thinking of another band which almost has the same music fusion - Spyro Gyra.  During this set, blogspot readers, The Coop wowed the shiny happy people vibin' under the bright sun with new tracks like Hieroglyphics Technician (a mellow yet rhythmic techno-sounding instrumental coupled with complex but flowing melodies), Thousands of Days (the point of the performance when this band had this crowd feeling a bit earthy while jazzed up to the song's vibrant energy) and Loose Chains (another mellow track that allows your ears to ride the cosmic wave of flowing melodies amidst the gentle vocal tone on the lyrics). This particular song attracted many hoopers and hippie dancing people closer to the stage area.

Next on SouthSide's list of things to do today was to jam with her other friends, Gemini Club (http://www.geminiclub.fm) during their set at Dos Eqquis stage. However since this was another stage area where the bright sun was too stand under, most of the crowd found relief relaxing in the sparse shady grove of trees along side the stage, blogspot readers. Three years ago, Gemini Club played North Coast Music Festival at this area ...zoom to the present, they returned opening with a thunderous drum beat to kick of their 2013 set. Featuring the vibrant sounds of pop/electronic rock, this local group had many (who were adventurous to brave standing in the hot sun) dancing while the many others including SouthSide chilled in the shade. The heat wasn't the only thing effecting people today. It was causing Gemini Club some technical problems because (a) the band wasn't used to "working" in the daylight and (b) the above 90 degree temps made the computers on stage overheat. "...computers work best in 60 degrees..."  Even Tom's (front man/guitarist) guitar didn't want to tune properly, blogspot readers. Despite that, Gemini Club (also known for their DJ and club remix sets around town), did their best in giving their fans and other Coasties a good show by performing a couple of new songs coming out in a few weeks. Fans can now stream or download their latest EP - Here We Sit off their site. SouthSide would like to make a small suggestion for next year - how about having the stage face the opposite direction where it's not facing directly in the sunlight. Also there should have been a water station at this general area since most of the Coasties were either between the North, Coast and Dos Eqquis stages - it's long hike to the nearest and only one water station (for a fest this huge, not cool!) located by Tent stage.

Walking around the fest, there were more fashionably dressed Coasties seen throughout the park such as a couple of nuns ...actually two guys dressed as nuns ...Alice and the Mad Hatter cosplayers ...a group of female superheroes as well as the pseudo hippie/flower children. There was even a Deadmau5 character walking around the fest too. However SouthSide mostly noticed there were children ...many of them younger that her youngest daughter's age with their parents at North Coast with no special area of their own except the blanket areas where their parents kept them away from dancing crowds. Perhaps for North Coast 2014, there should be a kids area where local (or national acts like Kid Koala and/or The Arggolites - they have songs which appeared on the television program Yo Gabba Gabba) kid friendly acts perform (under a shady area) with other special activities for the younger Coasties to enjoy with their parents without having being nearly crushed or trampled by wildly dancing people especially at Last Stand stage where Dirty Dozen Brass Band (from New Orleans) was jamming. These "dirty old men who feel like spanking somebody" had this crowd grooving to the sweet jazz sounds of the Big Easy, blogspot readers. While over at Tent Stage, EDM was rockin' a crowd of gyrating party people during Paul Universe's set to which many were going insane with glee song after after song. Yeah it was super nuts inside as well as outside this stage area, blogspot readers! Hey, SouthSide found Waldo! Then over at North stage (the largest crowd SouthSide had seen all afternoon) Dastik's EDM set had most within this park bursting to life from each pulsating beat heard around the area. You should have seen the hundreds of bodies dancing and going wild under the waning afternoon sun. It was totally incredible! It didn't matter where you were - near the front of the stage, knee deep inside the middle or towards the outer edge (where this reviewer was) - there was always bodies in constant motion. Oh cool - someone was wheelchair surfing! There's Cookie Monster ...and he's a Wu-Tang Clan fan too ...and so is Cheshire Cat. Who knew, blogspot readers!

SouthSide didn't stay the entire day (felt a little winded from all of the excitement) but if she gets a chance next year, she'll brave the entire lineup of music acts rockin' North Coast Music Festival, blogspot readers. It was, in a nutshell, a fun experience. She met and befriended Coasties from all corners of the world and states ...danced till her feet couldn't dance anymore and partied like there was no tomorrow! Though this reviewer may be tired now, she's ready to tackle next North Coast 2014 ...and hopes to see you there.

"...Come on, House of Blues, get rowdy..."

Hey, blogspot readers, no superstitious happenings around town on this rockin' Friday the 13th! SouthSide's feeling very lucky as she kicks off a long party weekend at the legendary House of Blues to see her long time friend, How Far To Austin perform. But first, she was getting her neo-soul/R&B/funk groove on with her other friend Animate Objects (http://www.animate-objects.com) during the last few songs of their opening set. This reviewer highly suggests checking out this local band's funkified smooth sound and lively tempo of their modernized throwback soul groove. Though they wouldn't say more in detail, be on the lookout for something BIG and rockin' to happen in the future by this band, blogspot readers.

If you haven't experienced the rockin' soulful blues/alternative rock of How Far To Austin, SouthSide highly suggests checking out her friend at their next performance. Blogspot readers, this local band didn't simply rock the legendary venue's stage on Friday night ...each member revitalized the crowd with such electrifying momentum of hot bluesy rock and strong female vocals that it brought the roof down. Despite not being the HFTA band this reviewer remembers seeing a couple of years ago, she thoroughly enjoyed the "new" band set up and rockin' sound. After popping the stage with a firecracker of a song which featured Katie fronting the bnad within a dynmaic vocal stance amidst the band's energetic pop/alternative rock, HTFA displayed a wide variety of music genres to easily please the ears. From a downtempo melody of a soulful sound to upbeat dance/pop tempo, the band offered the crowd a little of something for every particular music taste to enjoy as well as dance to. For example during the 3rd song of the performance, HFTA had this crowd jammin' to the twitterpating riffs at the bridge with a few bars of Madonna's Material Girl in five-part harmony towards the end of the song. Or get your funk groove on amidst a blues/rock sound during another song which kept the crowd basking in the glow of more five-part harmony after Katie wowed the ears with her soulfully dynamic voice. SouthSide couldn't get enough of how Katie's voice and HFTA's music wonderfully complimented each other, blogspot readers. This reviewer was awestruck as well as getting warm shivers when Katie not only dynamically wowed but also emitted some heartfelt emotions and chateneuse-like soul to pop the lyrics to life. This vocalist was truly breaking hearts with her voice especially while in a downtempo blues/rock sound as heard in songs like Little Too Late and Morn' After Blues. SouthSide does suggests listening to other songs like Tonight, Goodnight Madison and Dry Gin yet the real highlight of the night was Katie's powerful vocals on the band's cover version of Proud Mary - HFTA took the beginning of the song nice and slow (so reminiscient of the Ike and Tina version) before exploding with a hot fast upbeat blues tempo. What a fantastic way to end their set on one electrifying jam, blogspot readers.
