"...everyone knows Rob..." ~ Paige DeChausse

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's rockin' the scene - NOLA style! The sweet lively rock alternative (and more) sounds and the party life of New Orleans paid a visit recently at North Center's hip venue Martyrs'. There, this reviewer had the extreme opportunity to meet, interview, and hang out with a soulfully jammin' nomadic band of musicians spreading the "good gospel word" of fun and rockin' music known as The Revivalists. But before meeting these wonderful yet funny guys, SouthSide highly suggests befriending The Paige DeChausse Band. This local band, blogspot readers, literally blew her (and the ears) away from the amazing spitfire sound from Paige's soulfully dynamic voice and hot upbeat tempos that made you groove to the rhythmic beat. This reviewer liked how Paige's vocals had the dramatic effect of not breaking just the heart bu also melting the soul especially when in a downtempo rhythm. To say this vocalist was hot would be an understatement. She was sizzling while electrifying the stage during such songs Jolene, Treat Me Right and up Above My Head to which she popped the lyrics to life amidst a vibrant sound. The band of DeChausse Band totally matched their female leader and her sultry voice style. They excitedly wowed this crowd with a variety of melodic tones as well as rhythmic groove featuring a cross blend of rockabilly under a bluesy tone or a fast-pace tempo with a gospel-like feep to get you seriously moving amongst the infectious toe-tappin' sound. Paige's moving tribute to The Band's Levon Helm during The Weight where a trio of vocals(Paige, Nick on guitar and bandmate on organ) soulfully rocked the ears before closing out this set with a rousing cover of Sam Cooke's class - Bring It Home. For more information about Paige DeChaussse Band, visit http://www.facebook.com/paigedechaussemusic.

"...get low, Chicago ...I know the floor is dirty..." ~ The Revivalists

The Revivalists could be described in five words or less in six different ways: "...honest songwriting with honest arrangements..." (Andrew on drums), "...continually fresh and energetic..." (Ed "Steel" on pedal guitar), "...the band your parents also likes..." (Rob on saxophone), "...vibrant songwriting rockin' jamful deepness..." (Zack on guitar), "...sexy soulful powerful love..." (David on guitar and vocals), and "...rockin' jammin' soulfully slammin'..." (George on bass). Yet that's barely the tip of the iceberg, blogspot readers, after beginning this interview. If you truly want to know who The Revivalists are besides "...dashing saxophonist with five [5] other guys ...lots of van driving mileage ...shit changing tires and truckers ...[featuring] Party Bust George..." SouthSide highly suggests checking out this nomadic troupe of musicians from New Orleans at their next performance. And be prepared to party the night away with this down-to-earth group of nice guys. Or as The Revivalists put it "...great dance songs ...that word your ass and heart ...butthole and butt-soul..." type of show awaits your arrival. As you see, this band was quite open to SouthSide about anything and everything during the interview before their headlining performance. And they didn't disappoint her or their many fans tonight either.

This was one hot rockin' "...energetic ...powerful..." performance from start to finish, blogspot readers, which also included not one but four extra songs during their encore. To say The Revivalists rocked the stage would be a gross understatement as well as not an accurate account of the Martyrs' show. This band electrified the stage with a cross blend of music genres which did soulfully jam besides keeping their fans in a constant state of movement to the infectious swing of vibrant rhythms and beats. There were plenty of booty shakin' moments that fired up the crowd (especially those near and around the stage) into having a real good time NOLA style. Yet there were also moments when the mood and pace was quite low key ...subtle to allow David's voice to be more heartfelt and to surround everyone listening into the band's melodic vibe. Then, there were moments when either sound and/or band was being neither but just simply rockin' the stage so hard that SouthSide had to stop writing and enjoy the Dixieland fun especially when they performed Chase's House where David and Rob mingled around the floor with the crowd for a bit. In a way, you could say, blogspot readers, this show was almost like attending one of those tent meeting revivals - nonstop dramatic thrills and chills to excite your soul.

So what inspired the band name? That, blogspot readers, is an interesting tale. The Revivalists got their start while New Orleans was in amidst of a rebuilding period after Hurricane Katrina where Zack ran a couple of band names with co-member David. They both liked the name The Revivalists which part of the name came from watching a 60 Minutes segment about Bruce Springsteen and how he described his tour (at the time) as a revival. Yet, historically, the band feels it's fitting how they envoke other styles of music like Bob Marley, jazz, rock, funk, hip hop and more within their own sound. And coincidentially, the members aren't from NOLA as in born and raised there. They, like many after Katrina, are transplants who helped rebuilded that music centric town. Still they, they embodied the spirit and vibe of the place they all now call home. Then SouthSide wondered what's the local scene like New Orleans and according to the band "...[it's] awesome..." where like Chicago "...there's [something going on] any day of the week anytime of the year..." Within NOLA, besides the support between musicians especially for new bands and artists, there's also "friendly" competition meaning "I'm kicking your ass on this guitar solo kind" at times during jam sessions. In the end, the scene in New Orleans is all about inclusion which also includes fans during performance.

You definitely could feel that "inclusion" during The Revivalists peroformance, blogspot readers. Spreading the love and spirit of their hometown in Chicago, this band instantly had "included" their crowd of fans and friends into their "feel good" music. Many were not only dancing but also singing along to their favorite song like Concrete, Catching Fireflies and Monster. SouthSide hadn't truly attended a show like this where the band rocked the stage with a firecracker spirit that constantly made her want to dance instead of writing notes in her imfamoust notebook throughout the set. For example, during Common Cents, it was a nonstop wave of music full of lively antics coupled with exuberant excitement shared by both band and fans as the venue was filled with hints of jazz/hip hop/funk/rock and soul. Or try Concrete where The Revivalists rocked the stage of highly intenstified hype and energetic momentum which totally had this party pumped even in the back where this reviewer observed the action. Even while in a heartfelt downtempo rhythm, this band still found a way to continue surrounding its audience with energy and momentum amist a soulful vibe as heard in Monster and Pretty Photographn. Believe it or not, blogspot readers, there wasn't a moment when this crowd wasn't still or unethusically responding (ie clapping, screaming, whistling, etc) during The Revivalists' set. Whenever the mood called for it, there was some type of reaction letting the band know they were an intregal part of this performance as well as showing their love for the music.

In SouthSide's honest opinion, they should be billed as the "hardest workiing" band, blogspot readers, due to their constant presence on the road. Last year, The Revivalists did 150 shows (almost as much as SouthSide did) and this year, it looks to be a busy one for them again as they are set to do approximately 200 shows. However, don't think they're always on the road touring. The band reassured this reviewer that they do stop home from time to time ...and honestly admitting that touring is hard on relationships. The Revivalists find it easier to perform at places where they know people "...who can show us around town..." or vice versa where people know them and open their homes to rest. "...we have friends in big cities like Chicago ...and the last time we were here, we stayed for four days..." And as SouthSide promised - The Revivalists highly recommend grabbing a slice of Piece Pizza (located on 1927 W. North Ave in Wicker Park) "...it's not pizza - pie..." becaue they are nice to cool bands. After their Martyrs' performance, Piece supplied them and guests with pies. The band, when asked which songs fans should listen to, came up with a list of songs since they are the ones to which many respond to the most. Already mentioning Catching Fireflies, try Soul Fight (off The Revivalists EP), Up In The Air, When I Die, Navigate Below and Criminal (off The Revivalists' latest CD - City of Sound) and Not Turn Away (from Vital Signs CD). Lastly since all good things including this interview had to come to an end, The Revivalists wanted everyone to know about their new album - City of Sound and that "...it's cool...". They will be on tour at a city or town near you this summer, blogspot readers, so check out http://www.therevivalists.com for more information and tour dates.

Until next time, support your local scene,
SouthSide

"...I would do anything for love but not Meatloaf..." ~ Mr. Les Flattery aka Mr. Bones

Cabaret, blogspot readers, is defined as "...a form of entertainment featuring music, song, dance, comedy recitation or drama [and] ... it is mainly distinguished by the performance venue..." However, on Friday night, SouthSide was treated to a special outting at the Greenhouse Theatre Centre by her number #1 fan/stalker, Joe, to see Kiss Kiss Cabaret. Now, if you haven't been to a cabaret show, there are some rules you must live by. Please remember this isn't The Admiral or The Gentlemen's Club where you get to sit and ogle the pretty dancing ladies as they strip, twirl around the pole or whatever. Yes, there are pretty ladies dancing during a Kiss Kiss Cabaret performance however the dances or in this case burlesque are merely to tease, entice and certainly awaken your sexual senses while performing theactric like skits to music. Also, as the definition states, there are music to juggling and magic acts (and more) to entertain you in between watching the lovely dancers, blogspot readers.

SouthSide has attended cabaret shows before but nothing like she had seen at Greenhouse Theatre Centre which was decked out in its spookiest Halloween decor for tonight's Kiss Kiss Cabaret performance. Besides featuring The Kiss Kiss Coquettes, Mr. Les Flattery as our Master of Ceremonies, The Claptrap Family Orchestra, there were special guests performing like Brad French (the "original" 50 shades of grey inside his Ultraman costume), comedian Adam Burke, and The Amazing Tomas (the magican) with Prince as part of the in-between acts. Plus - there were special appearances by Ray Ray Sunshine, Bella Canto, Lady India De Minuitt (with her awsomely handsome tall partner Drake) and SouthSide's Ms. Ammunition performing their signature cabaret acts. And not only you get a show but there's also a moment you get to be a part of the show and win fabulous prizes! For a two hour, which by the way didn't feel like an actual two hour show, blogspot readers, you're definitely getting your money's worth for an evening out on the town within the amount spent on reasonably priced tickets.

Though missing the opening act by The Kiss Kiss Coquettes, SouthSide and Joe did arrive in time to catch Mr. Bones (aka Mr Les Flattery) explaining the rules and procedures while watching a Kiss Kiss performance (he does a mean pseudo strip act too, ladies) and Ms Titi Touche's act in which truly got the audience's sexual imagination going before it was magic time. The Amazing Tomas and Prince had some of the audience (SouthSide included) in shuffling a deck of cards and then choosing whether the cards were black or red. Another act featured them in silent pantomime (with the help of a script written on a flip board) where they chose a member of the audience to pick a card, memorize it and show it to others before returning it the deck. Well, without going into long details, both magicans did guess correctly as well as had the exact card in their mouths! Next was Ramona Mourir making her first solo Cabaret debut on the Kiss Kiss stage. This world premiere featured a Halloween-theme country line, Texas-two style burlesque to the song Honky Tonk Halloween. Afterwards, SouthSide spoke with Romana to congratulate her on a successful performance noting that she looked like a natural than nervous (according to Romana) while performing her burlesque act. Then it was Werner's, the patriach of the Claptrap Family Orchestra, turn to entertain the audience with his rendition of the ever-popular Monster Mash song. Complete with vocal sound effects, this daper vampire-looking musician had the audience singing along with him at the chorus.

And what Halloween-themed show would be without a fond tribute to the longest-running movie about a "sweet transvestite" from Transexual Transylvania? Special performer Bella Canto wowed the audience with her burlesque act set to tunes - Creature of the Night and Time Warp montage before another Halloween-themed appeared on stage by Lady India and Drake. This duo act had the profound essence of a suspenseful Victorian-style opening to a Dracula-like story but then it suddenly turned into one sensually steamy belly dancing act, blogspot readers. The way Lady India's body movements seductively teased and enticed as she moved across the stage SouthSide's certain that she had a few hypnotized under her vampiric spell besides Drake in the end. After that hot number, it was definitely a good time for a (beer) intermission, bathroom break, and game show at Kiss Kiss Cabaret. If you have seen the Bozo show as kid like this reviewer, then you know all about the Grand Prize Game! Yet in this Kiss Kiss version instead of winning fabulous toys, a new bike or that fifty dollar bill (in bucket number 6!) there was a free beer if you get bucket number 1 and then other prizes for reaching buckets 2 through 6. Tonightt's contestant, birthday girl Hazel was able to reach bucket 2 to claim her free beer and a lovely coffee mug to say that she got from the Bahamas!

Now, the second half of the show featured comedian Adam Burke to which SouthSide loved his rant about people who tease and laugh at those who have seasonal allergies. She hopes they do get reincarnated as bees and not be able to pollinate. Then Ray Ray Sunshine had the audience feeling the pulse of her heart-stopping burlesque act before Frad "Ultraman" French appeared on stage with jokes, juggling (with his neon glow in the dark balls) and more. And there a little Ultraman fighting the ugly monster of the night too. Now, if you like power tools, guys (and this reviewer knows many of you do), then you should check out Ms Ammunition whenever she performs her electrifying burlesque act again. Oh the things this performer can do with a steel sander including bending at the waist and letting the spark fly between her legs! Sorry, no pictures, blogspot readers. SouthSide doesn't want to have a restraining order set against her. Yet, you could definitely smell the sensuality of sizzling metal throughout the theatre and stage. Ms Ammunition once again electrified another stage with her metal-tastic act. Sadly, it came time for Kiss Kiss Cabaret to end its weekly performance for the night but NOT before having the lovely Kiss Kiss Coquettes do a show-stopping finale to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' Red Right Hand (yes, SouthSide's an x-phile too). The quartet of Kiss Kiss lovelies in an orange neon-glow wigs seductively danced while lathering themselves and each other with matching body paint which truly had this audience (in their best behavior) cheering these girls on.

BUT the fun doesn't stop there, blogspot readers! After the show, you can actually meet and hang out with the performers of Kiss Kiss Cabaret at Kelsey's - the official bar of Kiss Kiss Cabaret until closing time (or tonight, getting kicked out before closing time). SouthSide was able to chat briefly with Mr. Les Flattery about her thoughts over tonight's peformance and he in turned shared some secrets with her. His monologue - it's not planned. unlike a comedian and there were some minor flubs in tonight's show yet SouthSide nor Joe noticed anything wrong. Oh, yeah Drake - he's about 6 ft 10inches, ladies ...yes, it was quite seductive being towered over a man that tall.

Being billed as "...Chicago's Finest Weekly Vaudeville and Burlesque Carabet show...", SouthSide ranks it at a 5-star rating and highly recommends checking out the next Kiss Kiss Carabet performance which will feature special performances by Ellie Rioux, Bella Canto, Stella Cheeks and Pearl Pistol on Oct 19th and Ray Ray Sunshine, Stella Cheeks and Shirley Knot on Oct 26th. "...Makeshift's the shit, huh?" ~ Amrita

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's back on the beat this weekend! Tonight, she's rockin' a frosty Friday and full moon at Beat Kitchen to see longtime friends Amrita and Makeshift Prodigy. She highly recommends hitching a ride on an innerstellar craft and reach the outside the paradigm with the psychedelic/rock sounds of Amrita. What a rush too! This reviewer liked how this local band honed in as well as captured the 70s intergalatic rock sound and vibe yet with a millennial twist which was fast paced, full of Stax guitar riffs and melodic on the keyboards. Amrita pumped the growing crowd with bursting energy and momentum inside its wicked space fx - think of them as an indie version of Parliament Funkadelic (with Bernie Worrell on keys), Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd mixed together. Though the bass feedback (during the second song) was hard on the ears, Amrita's music at times took on a Zen-like appearance and atmosphere that highlighted the dynamic vocal energy of front man Aaron. What was totally missing from this opening set - an awesome lighting fx to highten the psychedelic experience and the band's rockin' music. Off the album - outside the paradigm, SouthSide highly recommends immersing the ears to sugar coated god phone, love then hate and the title track ...in no particular order either. For more information about Amrita, visit http://myspace.com/amritarock.

There are nights when a band could have a good or bad performance ...or something in between. This was one of those nights for SouthSide's good friend Makeshift Prodigy where they had a show that was neither good or bad - it was very mediocre. Usually this extraordinaire melodic rock band would takes its audience on a spiritual-awakening journey via sight (with its homemade stage lighting fx) and sound depending how the music affects the ears on a personal level, blogspot readers. However sadly for SouthSide there was no such journey with Makeshift due to a couple of reasons - one of which was no fault of the band. Opening with Mathematica (one of many favorite songs off the band's current album) and Alive, fans were certainly pumped from the powerfully inspirational lyrics and melodic energy. It's so amazing to observe how Makeshift's music positively would affect their diehard fans (as well as new listeners) on a deep personal level that would be totally different for each person attending. Yet, it was hard to enjoy her own personal experience because the sound was very overpowering (even with earplugs on) and totally distored Makeshift's electronic rhythms song after song except for Sirens - the only song this reviewer was able to tolerate. Besides performing other fan favorites like Sentimentalist and Blinding Lights, Makeshift debut new song A Way Out in which the energy was taken down a bit ...less ambient but more of a contemporary rock sound though sounding a little flat within a dull staccato melody. Another "dull" moment occurred during the solo acoustic performance by front man Anthony that had a good majority of their fans being unimpressed by his dynamic vocal demonstration and style thus nearly slowing down the set to a grinding halt. SouthSide does suggest to Makeshift into rethinking about using the bright stage lighting fx in a rather confined and small venue space like Beat Kitchen. Other venues like House of Blues, Metro or even Reggie's Rock Club would have been able to handle such of an fx without blinding most of the audience or causing light-sensitive headaches (as this reviewer experienced after the show). SouthSide does still recommend blogspot readers checking out her friend Makeshift Prodigy but hopes their next show is better than tonight's. For more information, visit http://www.makeshiftprodigy.com or on Facebook.

February 2012

Hey, blogspot readers, where can you find love, learn about history, celebrate with a couple of dead presidents, sleep with a ground hog, eat, drink and get beads and still have an extra day to do it?

Why, February of course!

SouthSide highly recommends checking out these events happening during this rockin' month.

1 Feb - Dead heads (re)unite at Double Door for the Grateful Dead Tribute show! Begins 7:30p
Visit http://www.doubledoor.com for more info.

Meanwhile frieds, Dot Dot Dot and AM Taxi will be rockin' House of Blues along with State & Madison and The Scissors.

4 Feb - Rockin' Bada Brew (located in Crest Hill, IL) is the Benefit for The Fallen. SouthSide highly recommends showing love and support for her friend Nate who recently lost everything to a fire (including most of the band's, Bleed For The Fallen, gear) before Christmas. With your generous $7 donation, you get to rock to metal-tastic performances by Devils in Angels, IN2 The Inferno, Catalyst, Renegade and more. 21+ show

Meanwhile at Reggie's, it's the annual SXSW showdown where SouthSide's friend Yellow Jackets will be competing against other local bands for the final spot on the lineup. epidemic. A major risk factor for expensive, chronic conditions like heart
disease, diabetes, and cancer, it costs our health care system nearly $150

individual rights and personal responsibility?" For tickets - http://web.ovationtix.com/trs/pe/9045265

10 Feb - SouthSide gets an early jump on Valentine's day with Alpha Clef Project band at Darkroom for "The Love Before" Concert. Also featured in the lineup - Khari B, Aniba Hotep & The Sol Collective, Ish and Soltre Jones.

First head to TriCity Health Club for a workout from 10:30a to 1:30p where your $15 donation will get your bod into shape ($10 will be donated to Animal House Rescue, a non-kill animal shelter in Huntley, IL and Ken Gussy fund - to help pay for surgery in which Ken's sister will be donating half her liver to save his life). Then after working out head to Ray's Evergreen Tavern (in St. Charles) for an urban market - vendors will be donating 20% of their sales to both causes.

Meanwhile love, peace, happiness and groovy sounds will be rockin' this year's Winter Peace Fest happening at the historic Portage Theatre (located near six corners Irving Park/Milwuakee/Cicero). This all day ALL AGES event will feature bands (Digometric, General Patton & His Privates, Monk 9, Awdazcate - to name a few), DJs, Spinners, Speakers, Lasers and other surprises until 2a. Tickets are $15 - get them now! Visit http://www.peacefestchicago.com for more info.

Over at Elbo Room - Life After Liftoff will be rockin' the stage with friend RayIsDude.

And finally, SouthSide will make her debut at NOCTURNA'S monthly show happening at Bottom Lounge where the fashionably dressed of the Goth/music scene will be partying. This month, they will be celebrating new loves and broken hearts at this Valentine's themed party. GlitterGuts (cool photo folks) will be there to document everyone's best holiday black and red attire while good friend DJ Scary Lady Sarah spins your favorite "dark" loves songs (send requests in now). And as an added bonus - heart-shaped treats for all.

12 Feb - over at Mellow Yellow restaurant (located in Hyde Park), check out good friend Jesse Charboneir along with musicians Adrian (on piano), Michael (on bass), and Nils (on drums) as they jazz up your pre-Valentine's Sunday brunch from 10a to 2p. It's ALL AGES so bring the kids for a wonderful music experience ...musicians are encouraged to jam with the band too.

Meanwhile at Fitz's Spare Keys (located in Elmhurst, IL), friend Ivory Theory will be hosting a SXSW fundraiser to help finance their rockin' trip to Austin, TX in March. ALL AGES (except afterparty is 21+ only) / $7 donation

17 Feb - hey, do you want to know a hot secret ...promise not to tell anyone - sorry, blogspot readers, it's SO hot that even SouthSide cannot tell you but she can only say it's involves a local band ...a good friend and it's happening at Metro.

19 Feb - good friend, I Can Hear Myself Levitate will be rockin' a special Sunday Elbo Room appearance along with Disarmed, Curio and Track & Field.

21 Feb - MARDI GRAS partying

23 Feb - check out good friends, Kelsey Montanez and Kona Villamil (of Trainwreck Symphony) with SouthSide as they rock the stage at Elbo Room.

24 Feb - SouthSide returns to Elbo Room for more music and fun as good friend Alaya Conscious rocks the stage with Chicago Trash Ensemble, Artist vs Athlete and Zero to End featured in lineup.

25 Feb - a special, non-review outting for SouthSide. She's ditching the pad and pen for a relaxing evening at The Drake's famous Coq d'Or lounge with good friend and jazz crooner, Jesse Charboneir who will be performing three of her favorites (this reviewer has many standards and rarely heard favorites) by Bobby Darin, Frank Sinatra and Billie Holiday.

Also happening this month - Urban Circuit Market ...stay tuned here for date and details.

Until next time, support your local scene,
SouthSide
