13 Jan 13 - XXI Finals WOSP

Cześć czytelnicy blogspot, to zdarzenie zbiera pieniądze dla dzieci!
Hey, blogspot readers, it's an event raising money for kids!

Photo0536 ~ Joanna Beads

SouthSide and her daughter spent a chilly Sunday afternoon enjoying the sights, fun and music while attending The Great Orchestra Christmas Charity sponsored by WOSP Chicago inside the historic Copernicus Center. The main goal of this event was to raise money in saving the lives of sick people especially children as well as improving their medical condition by purchasing much needed medical supplies and equipment for hospitals all over Poland via the generous donations of Poles everywhere. So far, this organization has raised over $83,000, blogspot readers! For more information about The Great Orchestra Christmas Charity event and how to donate, visit http://www/wospchicago.com (the page can be translated into English if you don't speak Polish).

Photo0535 ~ Barbara Gasior photography

This day-long event at Copernicus Center occupied two floors featuring vendors and fabulous artwork and jewelry to purchase in support of organization's theme or cause (each year, the organization raises money for different theme or cause such as children's heart surgery or saving the children victims of accidents). On the 2nd floor-balcony area, there were excellent prime examples of avant garde artwork from bold watercolors to photography (by Barbara Gasior) ...some abstract as well as quite angelic (by Lidia Wiakowska). One of the particular art pieces caught SouthSide's eye was called "the lonely woman" by Irena Siwek. Plus there was a jewelry vendor (Joanna Beads) showing off her lovely beaded neck pieces.

Photo0538 ~ "lonely woman"

Meanwhile on the main floor, there were booths where young girls and tweens could get pampered with professional manis and facial makeup or have their hair styled for a small donation. Over at the larger tables, people could enter raffles and win fabulous gifts and prizes such as autographed CDs (by popular Polish artists) to gift baskets from local businesses and more. There was something for the younger kid age group like story time and dance contest. Those needing a much needed break and massage PDR Physical Therapy Center was on hand to give you a deep back or shoulder rubdown. And despite not understanding the language, blogspot readers, SouthSide and her daughter were met with friendly smiles and greetings throughout this family charity event.

Rockin' the main stage inside the Copernicus Center, featured bands and artists like Dori Koz, July Trio Autofobia and Eon Arc (just to name a few) entertained a sizable audience from traditional Polish music to hot pop rock/alternative. SouthSide highly recommends checking out Maggie D Grupa (http://www.maddgied.us and also on Facebook) who rocked out the stage to a lively set done in both English and Polish which she found to be very vibrant and full of life song after song. At times, Maggie D electrified the stage with hardcore rock riffs and danceable rhythmic groove especially when she did her cover version of the Gnarls Barkley hit "Crazy". This reviewer loved the energizing tone of the gospel organ sound matched alongside the electric twang of the guitars.

Photo0542 ~ Maggie D Grupa

Also she highly recommends rockin' a soul/funk/R&B fusion performed by Wishing Well (http://www.facebook.com/wishingwellchicago). Though offering their audience a slightly different change in pace, this local band truly brought some soul and dynamic female vocals to which each song received a warm reception. SouthSide liked how the band opened their set with a toe-tappin', hip shakin' song to draw the audience into their soulfully rhythmic groove before taking the energy down a bit to allow Anjali's vocals shine under the spotlight. These were the moments when Wishing's music was wonderfully melodic and soothing under it's soul/R&B/funk fusion ...nice floetry especially during the instrumental bridges where nothing was rushed as your ears soaked up each note played. They really got jammin' when performing a lively pseudo reggae/ska song to which Anjali had a little fun with the lyrics before setting the roof on fire with some classic soul covers by Aretha Franklin ("Chain of Fools") and The Steve Miller Band ("Fly Like An Eagle") which closed out their performance.

Happy Birthday, Kelsey...

"...tonight, we are young / so let's set the world on fire..."

Hey, blogspot readers, no threat of snow or wind can stop this reviewer from rockin' her weekend fun. SouthSide kicked off a long three-day weekend of local events with a two-night stay at her home away from home - Elbo Room. Tonight, she was there to celebrate a special birthday with good friend, Kelsey Montanez (who recently turned 21) as she covered both floors of this popular venue.

Upstairs, the audience was delighted to the soulfully dynamic yet sultry vocal styling by singer/songwriter, Bridget Lyons amidst an organic acoustic sound and feel. SouthSide enjoyed the lively mix of music genres incorporated throughout this set in which complimented the way Bridget would pop the lyrics to life underneath a fiery sound. She popped the upstairs with such fiestiness and powress in her voice that you were meade to feel each what she's feeling when writing a particular song. The music itself lent its own "voice" (besides Bridget's equally dynamic backing vocalist) to her songs that at times, the rhythms could be gentle like a lullaby as well as fiery temptress within the fervor of the guitar riffs. The percussion rhythms off the congo drum did add sparks of energizing momentum (and some Latin flavor) to truly liven up the stage, blogspot readers. Each of Bridget's songs were performed passionately yet staying within the poetic range of the words which spoke to the soul especially when the group added some blues and country to the mix. Though not liking the lull between songs, this reviewer was definitely fired up to hear more from this artist and the band backing her. And as special treat for the honored birthday girl, Bridget and band performed an extra special birthday song for Kelsey which fit the mood and general theme of the night.

ER 1

Meanwhile downstairs, Erica Iozzo and her band were totally rockin' the basement main stage with their lively performance before good friend Kona Villamill of Trainwreck Symphony acoustically performed on stage. SouthSide has seen the entire band, Trainwreck Symphony, amplied and rockin' hard on stages around town however this was the first time to hear the same TWS songs under an acoustic vibe. And guess what, blogspot readers? The songs translated very well under an acoustic guitar sound yet more powerfully intense by the emotions attached to the words in which this reviewer had never felt before when they (the songs) were amplied. It was amazing how Kona under this intense vibe and setting would become more bodily animated ...expressive while on stage mesmerizing the audience with his performance whenever he felt the "spirit" of the song moving him. Each TWS song performed amidst the acoustic sound took on a whole new meaning and definition that wonderfully complimented Kona's dynamic falsetto tone espcially when performing a touching song dedicated to his sister. SouthSide immediately felt the love and concern he has for her ...advising that she never change and to stay true to herself. Another highlight of the night came when he performed sololy on stage covering The Backstreet Boys' Bye Bye Bye - loved how he took the original pop vibe and brought it down to a more personal level truly popping the words behinds the lyrics with his voice. Closing out this set, Kona paid tribute to a dear friend who was killed by a train while trying save another from committing suicide with his version of Hallelujah ...the most moving version SouthSide has ever heard, blogspot readers. This reviewer highly recommedns catching Trainwreck Symphony this Friday at House of Blues (in Chicago) on March 2nd.

06 Sept 12

This local band has been known to inspire, motivate, enpower as well as enlighten their fans through the use of mind-blowing, epic compositions and sound heard within the symphonic/experimental rock music, blogspot readers. Now, they're poised and ready to take that inspirational experience and more to the next level. Tonight at Angels & Kings (located inside Hard Rock Hotel), Makeshift Prodigy held a listening party to give family, friends and fans a sneak preview of their upcoming (yet to be titled) EP. This follow-up to Mathematica will feature not only an intro and outro but also five new songs in between.

And the verdict from SouthSide?

If the band's goal was to bring their music, sound and inspirational vibe to more of a "adult" level and maturity, then this reviewer says Makeshift Prodigy has accomplished it, blogspot readers, with their first EP under Atlantic Records.

Nothing has been lost or muddled within the new EP's sound. The intensity of the symphonic/experimental music still remains but if you listen closely you can tell each member in this band has grown up a little within their craft. Though missing a few things (like Brandon and his lyrical hip hop verse), the direction to incoporate more falsetto vocals and powerful bursts of energy as well as upbeat, rhythmic piano-driven (check out track 2- Bittersweet Surrender) songs is a welcomed sight. There's even a touch of hardcore guitar rock riffs as heard in track 3 - Perfect Mistake and heartfelt tenderness amidst intense crescendo rises and powerful symphonic impact as heard in track 4 - Miracle.

Opening with an attention-grabbing intro and track 1- Chasing Daylight, Makeshift Prodigy's new EP will give their fans something more than hope and inspiration but also more epic-building music and energy that might bring a tear (or two) as heard in Miracle and track 5 - A Way Out. This particular track, after feeling the swell of heartfelt emotions from front man/pianist/guitarist Anthony on lyrics, had the vibe of a Makeshift anthem in the making but not as powerful. Still it's a nice follow-up to SouthSide's favorite songs, Revolution and This Is The End combined with the way the composition and music set up (especially the momentum) highlights the motivitational spirit heard inside the lyrics.

Makeshift Prodigy will be performing the new songs live as part of their Fall 2012 tour with a Chicago performance at Cubby Bear (Wrigleyville location) on Wednesday Oct 10 featuring I AM Dynamite and Board of Governors. For more information, visit http://www.makeshiftprodigy.com.

01 Apr 12 - part 2

After another SouthSide mad dash using CTA transit and bus from Rogers Park to Wicker Park, this reviewer arrived in time to party (again) duringthe April Fool's Day Fan Appreciation show. Held at Double Door, this $1 show featured a variety of music performances by friends Paragon and The Walking Shadows along with Chinese Professionals, Still Searching, I Attack and Persistence of Memory.

Chinese Pro 1 Chinese Pro 3
SouthSide highly suggests checking out the awesome drum kit setup while rockin' to the intense, electrifying combination of percussion and electric guitar instrumental epic rock by the duo known as Chinese Professionals. These two musicians (drummer Victor and guitarist Peter also part of the band Big Electric) not only vibrantly warmed up the auidence and tonight's lineup, blogspot readers, but also wowed everyone including SouthSide with a hot energizing sound of percusssion rhythms and electric riffs. How amazing was Victor's drum kit - the best place to view him working it was at the balcony where he was literally surrounded by many different cymbals, tom drums and more. And believe it or not, he used every single piece of equipment attached throughout Professionals' performance. This reviewer enjoyed the duo's rock intensity felt as well as heard via the boisterious sound in which the musicians fed off each other's electrifying vibe amidst the epic instrumental music. Visit http://www.gigity.tv/ChineseProfessionals or VicsDrumShop Facebook page for when and where Chinese Professionals will be performing again.

Paragon 3 Paragon 4
Looking for a band with that unique hardcore metal sound that features intense melodies and fierce heartfelt vocals? SouthSide highly suggests rockin' with her friends Paragon at their next performance, blogspot readers. This local band combined two unseemingly complicated though compatiable pairs into one hot metallic vibe that had the audience feeling the energized music and voice (by front man/guitarist Nate) besides hearing it. Paragon enjoys immersing their audience deep within realistic as well as emotional metal rock like especially during the instrumental bridges to songs like The Fire Inside. Nate with his heartfelt angst popped the lyrics to life between blood curdling guitar intros and momentous finishes for your headbanging enjoyment, blogspot readers. Off Paragon's self-titled CD, SouthSide recommends listening to tracks 5 (Stray Love) and 6 (Bitch Girl) where this band's version of love ballads take on a whole new meaning - it's not pretty yet very difficult to obtain and maintain amigst that metal intensity. Also recommended for listening - tracks 2 (The One Bridge I'll Burn), 8 (Leaving) and 11 (Pancake) even though every song on this CD is worthy ...so crank the volume up. For more information, visit Paragon at http://www.musicbyparagon.com.

TWS 2 TWS 4
There are two kinds of poetry, blogspot readers. The kind that spouts flowery prose of love and adoration like a Shakespearean sonnet. Then there's the other kind that's not so flowery or pretty with its words of love because they can cut like a sharp knife to the heart. Meet SouthSide's dark poetic masters of the Goth/rock kind - The Walking Shadows. Unlike its musically dramatic twin, The Dead Superheroes Orchestra, Walking featured more a darker, hardcore Goth/industrial tone within its music while poetically spewing vicious verses about love, hate and death. It's still dramatic but not the pretty kind ...not one bit, blogspot readers. Still there's plenty of haunting mystery laid deep within the band's moody synth-guitar combination in which one can feel the double edge sword of crescendo rhythms and riffs piercing the soul. You'll definitely bleed from the heart when listening to songs like Crusader (electrifying guitar riffs that rip amidst the "beautiful" rhythms yet that can be deceiving when meshed together), Bullet Holes In Our Hearts (beware of the one who loves you the most ...and last) and The Devil You Never Name (some of us have a passion which needs to be kept a secret). SouthSide highly suggests ditching Shakespeare for a moment and try The Walking Shadows' This It Not Poetry music - you might discover how ugly, dark and deceiving love really can be. For more information, visit the band at http://www.thewalkingshadows.com.

SS 2 SS 3
SouthSide also highly suggests rockin' to the energetic pop/rock sounds of her new friend, Still Searching at the band's next performance. This reviewer enjoyed the highly intense energy Still brought to their audience the moment each member stepped onto the stage. With three guitars rockin' the venue, this band's brand of music had the lively "get up and dance" attitude and pop sound in which kept them hoppin' like Energizer bunnies after having way too many Monster Energy drinks, blogspot readers. It was wild, crazy unstoppable fun (even for a Sunday night) that not one inch of the stage space was left untouched while performin songs like All Over and Dance. Though within a downtempo love ballad, Closer, Still Searching continued to exhibit that their intense energy had never left the building amdist fierce twitterpating riffs as front man Chris shined on the mic with his heartfelt vocals. SouthSide says be prepared to shake that booty while listening to this band's contagious pop vibe - perfect for any Saturday night dance crowd. Visit http://www.wearestillsearching.com for more information on when and where this band is performing again.

09 Mar 12

Hey, blogspot readers, let's get physical-ly fit with this local band! And you don't need a gym membership either. Tonight, at Elbo Room, SouthSide joined many other "fitness enthusists" fans to see her friend Workout Music exercise the stage with fun, music and confetti. LOTS and lots of confetti. Also included in this intense music workout was Trash The Dress and The Apollo Effect (from Toronto, Canada).

Though missing Trash's performance, SouthSide did sample a little of Apollo's set and as much as she tried, she couldn't honestly enjoy it. Not saying the band's music wasn't vibrantly bursting at the seams within its intense rock sound but that would depend on which genre Apollo was performing while on stage. One minute this band had a Depeche Mode/The Cure soung before rockin' the stage as a Rascal Flatts country/rock band. Seriously, blogspot readers, all of this cross-genre jumping back and forth during the time this reviewer saw them left her feeling confused. Were they a metal/rock or country/rock band? Who knows ...the stage presentation (front man included) didn't help sell The Apollo Effect to SouthSide. For more information about this band, visit http://www.theapolloeffect.com.

WOM 3

Workout Music - this band will make you sweat by dancing to their rockin' music, blogspot readers. And when a Workout set is done, you'll be drenched in confetti-ed sweat wanting more. That's what happened tonight at Elbo Room as her good friend rocked out the lineup with fun pop/rock sound amidst a flurry of colored paper everywhere. It may have been solely paper confetti this time ...next show - who knows what magical fun props this band will pull out of their hat. After opening with a soulful rendition of Whitney Houston's I'll Always Love You (best heard thus far), Workout quickly had this packed basement lounge sweatin' to some new WOM oldies. Performing songs off Dance.Sweat.Rock., this zany local band didn't allow minor technical difficulties noisly interrupting the beginning of the set to ruin everyone's fun time. This crowd was ready to do more than just "workout" to their favorite song ...they were in a party mood. From Big Booty Jeans and Aint My Jeans to Drop Them Drawers (there's a raunchy theme going on here in case you haven't noticed), WOM fans were getting physical-ly fit to the band's high intensity and octane rock sound which fueled each member to turn up the momentum even more. SouthSide liked how WOM jazzercised each performance with energy from start to finish, blogspot readers. The music's designed not for you to stand around but to snag your entire body into the catchy pop hooks, rockin' pep and nonstop action like when WOM performed Don't Stop Now and Sounds Like Church. SouthSide highly recommends donning your best sweat gear and getting physical-ly fit with her friend Workout Music at a "gym" near you this 2012. 23 Mar 12 - The Hunger Games

"...may the odds ever be in your favor..."

There's something so sinster and wrong about that catchphrase whenever someone says it throughout the hottest movie of 2012 - The Hunger Games. You sometimes get the distinct feeling the odds may never be in the main character's favor ...especially if that character is Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), cinema's newest teen heroine.

For those not in the "know" about what The Hunger Games is about, here's a brief synopsis of the first book (without giving too much information away). In a distant (or perhaps near) future, after many wars and devastating natural disasters, the US is no more and is now called Panem splitting it into thirteen districts and a capitol simply known as The Capitol. Yet there was another uprising between the inhabitants of District 13 and The Capitol in which the outcome birthed the annual bloodbath - The Hunger Games according to the peace treaty formed with the other 12 Districts. This televised sport (think American Idol, Olympics and Survivor sans the tribal council meshed into one) to the death pits one boy and one girl from each district to fight each other until one is left standing. Actually, The Games themselves is merely a government tool to remind the lowly 99% who controls them and their lives - cleverly used in the propoganda video shown during The Reaping (when the names of the "lucky" tributes are pulled out of a fishbowl) at District 12 during the movie version - the poorest out of all districts within Panem where Katniss lives with her semi-catonic mother (still mourning over the death of her husband) and sister Primrose (Willow Shields). Yet there's no excitement or support for the Games in this district no matter how hard Effie Trinket (Elizabeth Banks), one of the many fashionably colorful characters who work and reside inside The Capitol (where most of Panem's 1% call home) tries to instill the fake hope that someone from their district will win.

This reviewer liked how the screenwriters Suzanne Collins (who wrote the popular triology series) and Garry Ross (who also directed this movie) along with Bill Ray wonderfully capture the tense moments (especially during the scenes before The Reaping when Katniss and Prim are getting ready for it and at the start of the game) without any (or with a few words) of dialogue. Reading the blankless, silent facial expression from Katniss's mother as she helps her oldest daughter prepare was gutwrenching. As a mother of two daughters, SouthSide completely understood the pain and heartache this character was feeling about having to send one of her daughters to fight despite hoping they wouldn't be chosen ...knowing there would be a slim chance of returning alive. This reviewer also liked how they captured the differing reactions from District 12 to The Capitol as well as the twenty-four tributes on the playing field during the countdown. One could easily sense the range of emotions from Katniss' nervousness (especially after being sealed inside the tube to reach the arena) as she stares at Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), her stylist to the celebratory party mood within The Capitol for the 74th running of The Hunger Games that leaves a bitter taste with Haymitch (Woody Harrelson) - District 12's only past winner and mentor to Katniss and Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). The scene when he's observing the little boy excitedly chasing his sister with a sword clearly displays his distaste for the murderous spectacle even though he himself has to assist Katniss behind the scenes to survive.

Ah yes - survival - the keyword thoroughly interjected Katniss' mind from the time she volunteers as tribute to take her sister's place to through the entirity of the games where her skills as a hunter (when hunting with best friend Gale Hawthorne - Liam Hemsworth) truly become handy especially against District 2's killing machines Cato (Alexander Ludwig) and Clove - career tributes specially trained for The Hungers Games. And even though Effie emphatically states tributes from Districts 1 and 2 don't get any special favors and/or treatment during the competition, you can tell she's lying. Districts like 10 - 12, the odds are certainly set against them to win ...and that's how President Snow (Donald Sutherland) in a subtle way informs Head Gamemaker Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) after telling Snow "...everyone loves an underdog..." Cheating does take on a whole new form during this movie as dangerous obstacles as tossed at Katniss' every direction ...whether it's Cato and his lethal band of bloodthirsty cohorts (in which includes Peeta) or The Capitol's genetically enhanced things (ie wild berries or tracker jackers) - all designed to wipe out her and the weaker gamers. True the scenes are somewhat violent throughout the actual Hunger Games itself yet in the movie, it's rather tame compared to what Suzanne wrote in her book. Still you get an idea of how grusome these Games are from the intense scenes when tributes race to the cornucopia to quickly grab weapons and/or packs as fast as they can before someone kills them in the process. Without giving away the ending, yes it does hint towards a sequel.

SouthSide, at first, was quite wary upon hearing there would be a movie adaption of Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games since Hollywood has the tenacity for chopping books to add and/or delete material as it sees fit for the audience (see review for the americanized version of The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo for more clarity). After seeing this movie, this reviewer thoroughly enjoyed how the screenplay was wonderfully crafted so that if you didn't get a chance to read the book (and SouthSide highly recommends that you do read the entire Suzanne Collins' series - way better than Twilight), you won't get lost during the nearly 2hr and 30 minute run time. Yes, some minor characters and/or details were either omitted, meshed together or added for this movie however the main important details still remained to easily follow as if you're reading the book itself on the big screen. Special kudos to the set, art and cinematography direction of The Hunger Games for translating the opulent look and splendor of what this reviewer imagined The Capitol would look ...more kudos to costume designer Judianna Makovsky for raiding Lady Gaga's closet and cosplay wigs to flamboyantly dress the 1% of Panem in the most outrageous clothing designs from Effie's powdered face and expensive dress suits to making Cinna's fire costumes (in which Katniss and Peeta wear during the opening ceremonies) come to life.

SouthSide also noted the cast was carefully selected for their roles for this movie especially Lenny Kravitz with his gold dust eyeshadow as Cinna the stylist (do not scoff at the title - being a stylist can equate to being costumer/publicist/confidant/cheerleader/advisor/friend and more wrapped into one person) and Stanley Tucci looking handsomely wild with blue hair as Cesar Flickerman, The Hunger Games version of Ryan Seacrest. There's one thing more why SouthSide recommends seeing The Hunger Games. Besides the strong female character portrayed by Jennifer Lawrence, the story's love triangle (between Peeta-Katniss-Gale) doesn't weigh down the movie (and book) so heavily compared to the other popularized teen series - Twilight. Here, there's NO brooding over "whom do I love the most" or creating conflict between Gale and Peeta to have them fighting over her ...and definitely NO "team" to choose because there's only one team to root for in this movie - Katniss (or District 12) - to win. To be honest, love is the farthest thing on our heroine's mind. She's only determined to survive and (hopefully) win The Hunger Games ...not for herself or the honor of representing her home district but for her sister. Love subtly comes into play between Katniss and Peeta yet the emotional feelings like he has for her really aren't there ...or are they since she was unwillingly forced into the "star crossed lovers" scenario.

Overall, The Hunger Games - a very good adaptation of Suzanne Collins' book ...worth the price to see it on the big screen before it hits the DVD / Blu-Ray. SouthSide cannot wait to see the sequel - Catching Fire.

Highly recommended

04 Apr 13 - Counterfeit i

Hey, blogspot readers, come spend an intense evening full of anger with SouthSide. Yes, there’s a “new” wave of rock appearing in pockets here and there within Chicago’s local scene called “anger” rock from bands like Evil Twin Sister that can vividly express raw frustrated emotions through their music and lyrics. Recently at the Beat Kitchen, this reviewer met another such band that expressed not only vivid anger but also intense pain and heartache told from personal experience within an energetic, vibrant sound. If you want experience pain and anger, blogspot readers, then she highly suggests you check out Counterfeit i at the their next performance.

This trio lit up the Beat Kitchen stage with a rousing eclectic mesh of keyboard/programmed sounds and live instruments which was technically one half of the driving force propelling Counterfeit i’s “anger” rock sound. It was loud ...thunderous and full of vibrant energy, blogspot readers. In a way, you could say, the music itself was a member of the band since it sometimes shaped as well as defined the mood and tempo for each song performed during the set. For instance, take the song 241 – this reviewer enjoyed hearing the furious frustration being lashed out at the intro (and throughout) in which she felt the music was personifying the pain and hurt of a tortured soul. Mood swings can be intense but feeling them within a harsh “anger” rock sound. Yes, it’s killer but this is the reality you face when in pain.

The other half to this unique equation would be front man and guitarist Derek on vocals who puts a face to anger (from his own personal experience of chronic depression and anxiety) that many of us (at one point or another) could relate. Using these same experiences, he spotlights the highs and lows while also showing there’s solace at the end of rocky tunnel of intense emotion. There were moments during this band’s set when SouthSide literally felt her face melting from the heated venom spewing over the mic in between bouts of calm. She highly recommends checking out Counterfeit i’s single, Still, where Derek demonstrates that there’s hope after experiencing an emotional tide of agonizing pain. SouthSide, from her own personal experience, can somewhat relate feeling such raw emotions but not quite as intense or on the same level as Derek or you, the person reading this blog entry. Yet, this reviewer enjoyed how his vocals could vividly convey that charged energy especially during the song Age of the Machines. Rage at its best without being so over dramatic.

One On One With Don Preston

He's a legendary jazz musician and has been part of the Detroit jazz scene back in the 1950's gigging with the likes of Charlie Haden in Los Angeles ...has done experimental music in the 1960's and performed with a band called Aha!. This artist has played and recorded with other artists such as John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Peter Erskine and John Carter as well as Chicago's very own Lou Rawls, Al Jarreau, Nat King Cole, Connie Francis, Leo Sayer and the list goes on and on. He has scored more than 20 feature films (including a part of the Apocalypse Now soundtrack) and 14 plays and has been confused for the lead guitarist of Joe Crocker and Leon Russell because they share the same name, blogspot readers. Besides collaborating and working with Frank Zappa, his long and extensive music career includes performing with the Los Angeles and London Philharmonics to acting in films like Forbidden Island (1944), Ogo Moto (1969) and 200 Motels (1970).

Who is this mystery musician you might ask?

If you've guessed keyboardist Don Preston, then you're absolutely correct, blogspot readers. And recently while he was traveling to his next gig, SouthSide had the extreme honor of chatting with Don about his extensive music career (including that infamous scene in Apocalypse Now), how he met Frank Zappa, his likes and dislikes for modern music in general, his current project Grandmothers Of Invention and doing magic tricks.

From Don's biography, Crytogramophone Records, he has been compared to Cecil Taylor because of "...his style of attacking the keys with intense passion ...his solos also reflect intellect, technical skills and a storyteller's way with a line..." and "...his playing, like his compositions, ranges across panoramas of mood and emotion ...all colored with the freedom that comes from possessing remarkable facility..." SouthSide while asking Don to describe his vast music career that spanned over six (6) decades somewhat stumped him but then he answered with "...age begets life and fame ...that's how I would sum up my life..." She wondered if he meant with age does he feel he gets better with his musical craft to which he said "...I don't think I'm better..." In fact, Don believes that he has harder challenges to meet as he grows older. For example, he has listened to older recordings from 40 years ago and compared them to what he can and/or cannot do today. "...Now, I'm facing challenges I wasn't able to do then but able to do..."  During the course of the interview, this reviewer wanted to know if Don has ever considered returning to his Jazz roots in which he answered that he never left it. He did tell SouthSide that as soon as he's finished with this tour that he along with the drummer will be performing with Bobby Bradford in his band. Don also mentioned that he's always writing Jazz songs and performs once and  a while at Jazz clubs.

Then, she asked him for his opinion about today's modern rock music wondering if it lost its creativity and/or artistic symbolism. Don doesn't know if it lost its symbolism however he has noted that something should be done about the music writing and has heard people singing the same one note. "...rock music has lost [its] creativity and [become] too commercialized..." says Don. He also made reference to the rap/hip hop music scene mentioning it as "...people talk..." in which he said "...it's not music..." and it's boring. On the flip side, blogspot readers, he has seen a rap group during one particular evening and commented that they were good. Getting back to his original point about rock music and due to its limitation to the same 4 / 4 beat count, Don stated that was the basic reason why he doesn't listen to modern rock music much. Yet, there were couple of bands which he likes - Throbbing Gristle (one of the first bands to perform industrial music) and  Henry Cow (it was rumored the band took the name for an American composer Henry Cowell but the band members have denied it) featuring Chris Cutler who was also part of Art Bears with Fred Frith (a multi-instrumentalist i.e. piano, guitar, violin) to which he likened to Frank Zappa for his composition writing. As far as modern rock goes, Don does like the Chicago indie band called Yellow Jacket saying "...they're amazing ...very good..." after seeing them perform at one of their recent performances.

So how did Don Preston and Frank Zappa meet? According to Don, it was around 1961 when both were performing a concert inside a huge concert hall that had about 5 to 6 stages of live performances. He said they exchanged phone numbers and that was it until later he (Zappa) called for Don to do an audition. "...I came to his house..." says Don telling SouthSide Frank had a basic band set up - organ, guitars and drums as well as a record collection almost similar to him ...classical composers to which Don calls his "...kind of music..." Back in those days, blogspot readers, Frank Zappa was experimental with music and Don had a group of his own scoring art films and movies. "...sometimes Zappa would jam with us if you could call it that..." Don states, "...[it was] mostly metallic..." then adding that "...Zappa  would show up at my house  with long hair and a monkey coat ...you couldn't tell where the hair ended and the coat began..." Don told this reviewer that original name for the band was Mother but since in those days the word "mother" was meant for something else (think one of those 7 words you can't say or use), the record company came up with the band name Mothers Of Invention. However, Don couldn't join the band because according to Frank "...I didn't know anything about rock-n-roll..." So in order to "know rock-n-roll", blogspot readers, Don began working with a lot of rock bands before auditioning for Zappa's band again. By this time, Mothers Of Invention was working a little more and gaining more popularity with Herb Cohen as their manager. And the rest ...is history.

SouthSide wanted to know what was it about Frank Zappa as a musician that had Don collaborating with him. "...as a musician, he [Frank] couldn't read simple music..." answers Don, "...[but] as a composer, he wrote complicated pieces..." which Don cannot explain why that was. He did state saying over the years, Frank became a fairly good reader of music that Don found his solos interesting even though Frank thought he was inadequate. "...reading music is a skill not a talent..." Don told SouthSide while describing that Frank was exceptional as a writer to which likened Frank's style to Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. Since Don has worked with many ...the best of the best within the music industry, this reviewer wondered if there was anyone he would like to work with and/or collaborate. Well, blogspot readers, "...that's one of the problems when getting older ...a lot or people you want to work with end up dying..." He would like to work with progressive rock musician Tony Levin (of King Crimson) as well as do a duet with jazz pianist Paul Bley (who plays with saxophonist Sonny Rollins). And the name dropping continued when Don told SouthSide a story about the time he had dinner with Paul and Carla Bley - his close friends since 1955. He told her that she was very innovative back then and wrote most of the music for him as well as writing Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra.

Remember when SouthSide mentioned earlier that Don Preston was an actor? She, then, asked him if he had the chance to portray anyone or any character in a movie who would it be. There are several he would like to play but he chose astronomer Carl Sagan (believe it or not, Don has an interest in astronomy) and swashbuckler legend Errol Flynn to which he and SouthSide having something in common - their favorite Flynn movie, The Adventures of Robin Hood. Don even gave her some movie facts about Flynn's role as Robin Hood because it's widely known the studio thought he (Errol Flynn) wasn't a good actor. So to prove them wrong Errol did his scene separately from his co-star the lovely Olivia de Havilland. Now if there was going to be a movie on his life story, SouthSide wanted to know who would Don like to have portraying him. It was a tough question for this jazz legend to answer, blogspot readers. "...it would take a week to go through all of the actors..." who would audition for the role. Don did mention seeing Burt Lancaster portraying him because he's "...a dynamic actor ...did so much with his characters in his movies..." and the late comedian Richard Pryor or an actor with "...a combination of the two..." About Richard Pryor, Don called him one of the funniest people on the planet and then began telling SouthSide a story about the time when he saw Pat Collins the Hip Hypnotist hypnotized a little boy into being Richard Pryor after asking him along with others what they wanted to be. "...here's a white boy without any color prejudice became Richard Pryor..." he said stating the boy was good as he could be especially when telling the audience a classic Richard Pryor joke!

As a member of the Grandmothers Of Invention, Don explained to SouthSide the difference between them and other Frank Zappa tribute bands. "...we're older now so we can't be called Mothers Of Invention..." Don laughs, but the "...main difference is that with Napoleon Murphy Brock and myself are the only members of Mothers Of Invention today [still] performing..." since they were with Frank Zappa when he was creating and teaching the music. One thing she didn't know about the original band set for Mothers Of Invention, blogspot readers, was that they were all equal members with rights and privileges to the band. By the time it was 1974, Frank Zappa's writing not only got better but also weirder with songs like Don't Eat The Yellow Snow, The Booger Man and Po-Jama People. Don also mentioned that most fans have probably been to a previous Grandmothers Of Invention show "...so they know our level of musicship [and] where it should be..." Don called a live performance of Grandmothers Of Invention show to the level of music theater. It's "...full of surprises..." says Don before adding "...a lot of things are going on ...not your run of the mill [Frank] Zappa band..." During this tour, Don and the band are featuring the CD in its entirety, One Size Fits All which was one of the more popular Zappa albums than Live At The Roxy and Burnt Weeny Sandwich. He encourages fans to sing along with the Grandmothers Of Invention especially when they perform Sofa (that's only sung in German).  Oh, be on the lookout for Don doing magic tricks while he's playing the keyboard like eggs coming out of his mouth. Yes, you heard right, blogspot readers, eggs coming out of Don's mouth.

Sadly, as the interview came to a close, SouthSide relied a message of "hej" ("hi" in Swedish) to Don from her friend Jessica and Don responded back that they might be bringing Grandmothers Of Invention tour there. He had more parting words about Grandmothers Of Invention for fans "...hear the music the way Frank Zappa wanted it to be played ...it would be the way he wanted us to play [with long instrumentals and extra bridges] ...he would never wanted us to play like the record..." also adding "...[we] try to make it [live Grandmothers Of Invention performance] a very exciting show..." Oh, SouthSide did ask about his contribution to the soundtrack of Apocalypse Now and Don told her it was music to the head tossing scene. Lastly, Don wanted all of Chicago to know that he loves our city. "...it's one of the beautiful cities in the states..." SouthSide in turn invited him to attend the annual food event - Taste of Chicago to sample the city's culinary best if he had time.

Thanks to Billy James of Glass Onyon PR for setting up this interview and to Don Preston for taking time out (while on the road) to chat with SouthSide.

Hey, blogspot readers, welcome to a photo essay of this hot rockin' local band known as Red Mercury Sky. They recently performed an exhilerhating set at Elbo Room featuring songs like Blood On My Hands, Remains The Same and Greedy Hands. Though missing their set, SouthSide was able to catch the final twenty minutes or so in which Red Mercury Sky performed their new song, Middle Man - a powerful vocal demostration by Dan as he forcefully belted more than just heartfelt emotions on the lyrics ...there was evidence of pain and heartache to which the grit the guitars wonderfully matched. This reviewer highly suggests checking out this band during 2013.
