25 Mar 13 - Fight for Marriage Equality

...this is 2013 and [we’re] doing this for our children ...it’s about equal rights for everyone ...[it’s] not just about marriage ...hopefully, this is the last frontier for equality in America...” ~ Lair Scott

...marriage equality is a civil right...”, blogspot readers.

For centuries, marriage has been religiously defined as a union between a man and woman. However in recent days, the US Supreme heard legal arguments from two separate cases. one involving DOMA – Defense of Marriage Act. It's a federal law which "...restricts federal marriage benefits and required inter-state marriage recognition to only oppossite-sex marriages in the United States..." where in Section 3 of DOMA "...codifies the non-recognition of same-sex marriages for all federal purposes, including insurance benefits for government employees, Social Security survivors' benefits, immigration and the filing of joint tax returns..." Section 3 of DOMA has been found unconstitutional in eight federal courts even though it passed both houses of Congress with a high majority and was signed into law by former President Bill Clinton on September 21, 1996. The other case deals with Proposition 8 (also known as the California Marriage Protection Act), a Californian law prohibiting gay marriage in which was a ballot proposition before becoming a state constitutional amendment in November 2008. Both Supreme Court decisions undoubtedly change society as well as politically defined what marriage is. In cities like Chicago, there have been protests and marches uniting many for and against marriage equality for the LGBT community despite the wait will be months away for decisions from the Justices.

On Monday evening, the cold spring weather couldn’t stop the several hundred who gathered at Federal Plaza with their posters and/or rainbow-colored flags for a marriage equality rally and then marched around downtown to the Tribune Tower. It was a unique mix of protesters from the young and old ...straight and LGBT...etc near Picasso’s Flamingo. Speakers like Kim Hunter (of Affinity Community Services) and a Lutheran minister from Romeoville, IL, fired up the crowd with their passionate speeches advocating the main central theme of equality (not just marriage) for all, blogspot readers. They emphasized how important this issue is today and reminded everyone what was at stake in the coming weeks and months as well as telling them to make sure their voices were heard not by the Supreme Justices but by the representatives on the state and federal level.
...say ‘NO’ to ballot box bigotry...”

For example, the Lutheran minister told the crowd how she and her husband raised their three children to accect everyone as God’s children before ending “...you are loved for who you are as God created you...” Speaking to Charlie Rice-Minoso of Equality Illinois, this reviewer asked him for his thoughts about the historic importance of the US Supreme Justices hearing arguments that would politically define what marriage is. He noted how 25 years ago it wasn’t acceptable being a bi-racial couple but now, it is also adding “...it’s an exciting time to see how the scene is progressing...” Brent holding the sign from ChicagoWelcomingChurches.org had a unique religious spin by saying “...radical inclusion was the gospel of Jesus Christ...” while Pastor Kim added how marriage equality would take away the barriers and give [same sex] couples support as well as societal recognition. “...I’m happy to be able to perform these types of ceremonies...” Then, SouthSide met same sex couple Michael and Randall for their thoughts and opinions about how important this is to them. Michael, a veteran and father of two, told her “...everyone should be entitled to marriage...” meanwhile his partner of two years, Randall said “...it [marriage equality] should be given ...[it’s] a civil right ...it’s the modern era ...shouldn’t be debated...” Michael also told this reviewer that he was glad to have the love and support of his children and family.

From the youthful end of the spectrum, SouthSide briefly chatted with Liz to get her thoughts about the importance of marriage equality to which she said “...it’s time for equality for all...” and that she’s a strong supporter for gay rights, blogspot readers. While joining the protesters in their march to Tribune Towers that went east on Jackson then south on State Street and then on Wacker, SouthSide was able to spend some time with Kim Hunter asking what this issue means to her to which she stated it’s more about rights of gay marriage but equality and justice for everyone ...a civil right movement for the modern family structure, blogspot readers. “...I wish we would go to the human rights of what marriage is...” says Kim “...there are other family structures out there ...those are the types that need protection and recognition...” noting there needs to be more protection rights for them. SouthSide didn’t escape the questioning either as some of her interviewees turned the tables asking her if she supported marriage equality, blogspot readers. She supports equality for everyone and hopes her eldest daughter can enjoy the same legal benefits as married gay couple one day.

After two days of hearing arguments from both sides of the issue between these two separate cases, it's a "wait and see" process now on how the US Supreme Court will rule since a decision won't probably happen until some time in June. However, in case you haven't noticed, social media and celebrities have been outspoken oabout their views on where they stand on marriage equality. From country music artist Willie Nelson to George Takei and Jay-Z, many are voicing and/or showing their support for equal marriage rights for all.

Yeehaw!

Let's country rock, blogspot readers! SouthSide's kicking up her heels tonight in the West Loop area for some hardcore country/Americana rock during this latest adventure around town. Tonight, she paid a visit to Cobra Lounge to review the return of Catl (from Toronto, Canada) along with The Not So Good Ol' Boys (from Cleveland, OH), Hammerdown and Rivals of the Peacemaker as the featured lineup of the night. This reviewer highly suggests grinding your teeth into some of the grittiest electric country rock ever heard around town by The Not So Good Ol' Boys. This band definitely rocked the stage as one of the loudest performances ever reviewed of 2012 to which SouthSide enjoyed the raw yet emotionally deep vocals heard Hard Road and Darker Than The Devil (off their myspace page). This band's blood truly runs deep with the Southern rock sound that can be heard in other bands like Lynyrd Skynyrd, The Allman Brothers, Johnny Cash, Creedence Clearwater Revival and more to which they draw some influences from their mentors' music and sound. SouthSide got chills from front man Zac on vocals when his voice vividly pumped heartfelt as well as emotional angst on the lyrics (listen to Nashville and Hard Road as good examples). For more information, visit http://myspace.com/thenotsogoodolboys.

From Toronto, Canada, this rockin' trio gave their Chicago audience a return performance featuring a boisterous sound and thunderous pockets of energy within their nostalgic homage to early rock-n-roll. Combined with a backwater blues/punk/Americana vibe, Catl, blogspot readers, thrilled this reviewer with some exhilarating yet raw vocal falsetto (from male lead Catl himself) and emotional yet soulful feminine voice (from Sarah on piano/organ/tambourine too) as well as Johnny (on drums) adding that rump-shaking, foot-stompin' sound to each song. Under this cloud of this rhythmic music, you could hear (besides feeling it) the fire and passion especially within the band's the pseudo gospel tune titled Gospel Song. Then while picking up the tempo a bit for 5 Miles (track two on Catl's Soon This Will All Be Gone Side B), South Side couldn't help feel hot energized momentum surrounding the venue as the trio released a fury of clashing percussions and vibrant organ  amidst the rockabilly/country rock mesh. Hearing such music, blogspot readers, does tend to get the blood pumping when listening to the intense sound though the melodic organ rhythms gave that same intensity a defining balance for you to tap the toes to. The rest of Catl's Chicago performance also featured a swingin' dance full of a swampy blues/rock tune for Gotta A Thing For You (track 4 on Side A of their current CD that will definitely make you shake, rattle and roll) to a sultry little number where SouthSide enjoyed the gradual build up during the lyrics before rockin' out the stage with thunderous conclusion that rocked out Catl's show. Check out Catl, blogspot readers, for this band's bumpin' grind of Americana/rockabilly music at their next performance. For more information, visit http://www.catl.bandcamp.com/.

"...where do you want to perform next..."
"Earth"

Hey, blogspot readers, are you ready to experience a trip of the mind through music? SouthSide recently took such of an experience at Elbo Room when seeing her new friend, Trip Effect. This unique trip of musicians impressed this reviewer with a contemporary rock sound that was laced with heartfelt yet energizing music. The music alone had this certain kind of momentum unfortunately hard to describe in which each member immersed themselves into Trip's songs. Yet, that's barely the tip of the iceberg about this new band rising super fast within Chicago's music scene. Before their Elbo Room debut, SouthSide talked to Aaron (bassist) and Derek (front man and guitarist) of Trip Effect via telephone about the music, songwriting and plans of performing on the International Space Station after a "Bonnie and Clyde" style bank robbery (don't worry - not really happening).

SouthSide likes bands that bend the rules. So when asking Aaron and Derek to describe Trip's live performances in five words or less, she received not only five words but a full a paragraph, blogspot readers. Their answers ranged from "...powerful, raw, soulful, entertaining music and energetic..." to "...make you want to dance..." as well as "...captivates the moment..." Then the guys went on to add "...[we're] known to dance and become wild..." while rockin' the stage amazingly "...without misplacing our instruments..." "We don't stand like statues or jump around like a metal band..." But wht Trip does for their audience is trying "...to play so people can feel the music..." the same way "as we did while practicing..." And that's exactly how Trip Effect reacted to their own music the moment they hit Elbo Room stage ...they were totally vibin' and moving all over especially while performing Save Yourself Tonight and new song, Second Life (not on the current EP).

With a band name like Trip Effect, SouthSide wanted to know why such a name and what did it signify to them. Well, according to the band, they tried a couple of other names when forming however it was front man and guitarist Derek who came up with the name Trip Effect even though Aaron and Eric weren't completely sold. Derek says the name's signature tagline is "...divine imprint on the soul..." meaning "...the effect of life and journey we each take..." Trip's songs try to "...captivate the experiences [in which] we can all relate..." plus "...you can listen to them without skipping..." around the CD. And speaking of songs, Trip Effect advises fans to listen to Past At The Edge and The Rain because "...[the] lyrics are less straight forward..." since the band likes "...to keep people guessing..." what the songs are about. SouthSide, when hearing both songs live, did get the sense of how thought-provoking the words could be based on her own personal experiences. If you're also thinking this band has their own secret or political agendas hidden within their songs, you're totally wrong, blogspot readers. "If you had a life experience, these expereiences will fit [our] words..." says Trip. And the secret to this band's unique songwriting style - music is written first and then words are added. For Aaron, this was a different writing process than he's used to in which he likes not having to sit down and write songs. Derek, on the other hand, a former metal rocker who never though of playing acoustic rock before, handles that task by putting in some serious time and effort into each song he writes. He might spend 10 to 12 hours a day playing the guitar ...gradually putting together the melody line and everything else. This is quality time and hard work here - so you won't be hearing songs that Trip cranked out within five minutes time.

Trip Effect being such a young band, has accomplished much within a short amount of time, blogspot readers. Besides a mention in the December issue of Illinois Entertainer and an on-air interview at Fearless Radio, they opened for Sister Kill Cycle and Mechanical Animals (a Marilyn Manson tribute band) at Penny Road Pub. They even have a fan who resides in Isreal. So what do they attribute to their success thus far? Basically with Trip Effect, it's all about quality and producing really good music. While Derek writes "...like a tornado...", Aaron handles the administrative side of the band duties i.e. fan mail, answering emails, sending press releases, etc and their booking agent Monica does the rest. "...[a] perfect fusion..." for Trip Effect especially since Derek comes to practice every week with a new song "...if you want to get your band going, you have to put in the time and effort..." the band advises. Yet, despite the success rolling their way, they are very humbled and feel blessed. Derek and Aaron couldn't even begin to verbally describe what the journey has been like for them thus far however they do want it to be known that they're not doing this for the money - just to share music with everyone.

And speaking of music, Illinois Entertainer called Trip Effect - a power trio which according to Aaron, is a good description of the band. Meanwhile, someone at Elbo Room told Eric (Trip's drummer) that they sound like "...Dave Matthews on steriods...". This isn't the first time, blogspot readers. "People usually have two bands mixed together..." to desctibe Trip Effect's unique pop with a metal mix sound after attending a live performance. SouthSide asked them what could she expect to see and/or hear during their record release show. "We're just going to play our originals as many as we possibly can...[going] to hear diversity of music off the EP [Second Life]..." Yes, this band can truly rock a stage with a heavy power sound within less instrumentation. "...[we] make our sound big as possible with little as possible..." That power was definitely felt during Trip's acoustic jam session - improve style. The music electrified the stage amidst the lively rhythms and vibrant acoustic melodies in which you can clearly notice each Trip member zoning out to their rockin' sound.

Now that Trip Effect is a member of the music scene, SouthSide wanted to know their thoughts and opinions about popular (mainstream) music today. To Derek, "...pop music is somewhat disgusting...[a] money-making enterprise producing cookie-cutter songs..." adding "...[it's] not about artistry anymore..." Believe it or not, blogspot readers, classic rock bands like Led Zeppelin or The Beatles never had number 1 hits - only memorable songs and music that still stand the test of time even in the new millennium. Aaron loved this question. The bassist and producer of a hip hop artist had this to say "..Thank God for the internet...[it] gave indie scene a place to ship out music without having to bow down to big record companies..." adding "...if you have good music, people will find [you and] it..." Lastly, Trip Effect wants everyone to know all of their songs are downloadable off Facebook and Reverbnation ...and you can find them on December 30 at Chicago Loop's Sports Bar (located in Streamwood). This reviewer highly recommends checking out this hot rising band - Trip Effect ...one mind-blowing experience.

Someone shout "Amen", congregation!

Tonight, the good shepherd of funk, Pastor Funkpleez along with His Pulpit Players preached on the holiness of the funk sound ...to get our souls jivin' to the smooth bass beat and electric rhythms at Elbo Room. To help everyone get down with their bad selves, there were performances by We Are The Sea, Brian Wheat Band and Rumors of War with local band Jesters.

Combining a hot rhythm section and dynamic vocals as well as an energetic sound is what Jesters brought the stage during their performance tonight, blogspot readers. From the moment they stepped on stage until the last note had died, each member of this band was rockin' hard especially in their costumes of the night - the band in white hazmat suits while Barbara was the sexy alien in her sassy skirt and boots. This isn't the first time the Jesters appeared on stage with some sort of eclectic costume. SouthSide remembers when they appeared on stage in matching band uniforms or even furry animal costumes (during one of the hottest nights in summer). Who knows what they will wear at their next show? Yet, do expect them to wear something fun that will certainly enhance your live show experience and excitement. Now ...back to the music, blogspot readers. Throughout the night, Jesters rocked with an energetic upbeat swing as well as fiery spunk and lots of rhythmic gas (provided by the horn section). There were plenty of toe-tappin' moments to get you groovin' along with the band even while slowing down the tempo just a bit to allow Barbara's vocals to shine under the spotlight. As the band's female lead on vocals, she adds sexiness and sultry attitude (especially when expressing it via her body language) besides wowing the audience with her soulfully dynamic voice. For example, during the cover of Joe Cocker's The Letter ("...my baby wrote me a letter..."), she upped the dynamic tone in her vocals to match the band's upbeat and rhythmic sound which rocked out their set more than their cover of Pat Benatar's Heartbreaker. It was valiant effort, blogspot readers, but this reviewer had to note that the 80s pop/rock sound doesn't really work well with the horns. Still with a band like the Jesters, it's all about the fun and making sure their audience has a great time rockin' with them. For when and where the Jesters will hold court at venue near you, visit http://www.jestersonline.com/.

Now, blogspot readers, you're invited to join the congregation of funk featuring the good Pastor Funkpleez and his Pulpit Players as "services" began with some shout outs and band introduction during Pass the Funk. Soon afterward, Pastor and the band had the room swaying to the rhythmic downtempo beat that also had a slight upbeat swing to keep many in the groove while he "preached" about getting Somethin' From Nothin'. This reviewer immediately enjoyed the soothing, groovi-licious sound especially when the band jams during the instrumental bridge ...taking the audience nice and slow or fast and short with its funk flow. Yes, this band was all about the funk and much more. If you listen closely to what Pastor Funkpleez's preaching, there's a message to heard and learned within each song performed only if you're willing to listen. For example, in his ultra smooth voice, Pastor dispensed a bit of knowledge on us during the song Somebody Lied while keeping the basement lounge within the Pulpit Players' funk groove. This reviewer has heard Prince's hits and rarities done in many styles from acoustic to rock but never heard him covered by a funk/soul band like she did tonight, blogspot readers.

During this particular performance, Pastor Funkpleez took the upbeat pop version of Prince's Let's Go Crazy rendering it to sound slow within a downtempo funk beat that had an intense guitar riff work and groove. This wasn't the only time SouthSide along with the audience felt the sanctified intensity of this funk band's guitar groove. Listen to songs such as GoHigher and Bumpskool where Pastor Funkpleez will up the funkified music and tempo for a hula hooper and others to shake the hoop to the beat. However during this performance, this reviewer did notice something was missing - a female vocalist. It would have been nice if Cedric aka Pastor Funkpleez had a dynamic soul sister to add some depth and soul as well as some sexy spice to a couple of songs like GoHigher, Somebody Lied or Dance 4 Meh. A female vocalist who could help the Pastor spread the message to the congregation especially while he jams with the band, blogspot readers. And it seems SouthSide and the band are on the same wavelength with this suggestion since they're currently looking for a female vocalist for backup duties. Overall, this reviewer highly suggests getting sanctified by funk/soul/groove sound by this Pastor and his Pulpit Players when and where they hold "services" again at venue near you. For more information, you can find Pastor Funkpleez on Facebook or follow him on twitter at http://www.twitter.com/PastorFunkpleez.

25 Dec 11 - Hugo

****CONTAINS NO SPOILERS****

SouthSide's faith in Hollywood was somewhat restored this afternoon when she saw Martin Scorsese's latest cinematic achievement delightfully titled - Hugo. This movie had everything she could ever want from a movie - a heartwarming story, romance, suspense, comedy, thrills and chills, a sense of wonderment and imagination and more - wrapped inside its nearly 3 hour running time. And if you're a vintage cinema aficionado like Scorsese, then you will very much appreciate the attention to cinematic detail from the vividness of Robert Richardson's cinematography to the Parisan period music of the 1930s as well as the homage to the early filmmakers and actors/actresses which include the works of Georges Melies within this movie's storyline.

Hugo, based on a book - The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, tells the story of an orphaned boy, Hugo Cabret (Asa Butterfield in his most powerful role thus far in his young career since The Boy In The Striped Pajamas), an automaton, its inventive creator Georges Melies (Sir Ben Kingsley - fine performance for this character actor) and a mystery that connects them together. Since the tragic death of his father (cameo by Jude Law), Hugo has lived and worked in keeping the clock of a Paris train station running on time with his drunkened Uncle Claude (Ray Winestone). Yet he mostly spends his time stealing food to survive while avoiding the ever watchful eye of the Station Inspector (Sacha Baron Cohen, a light comedic but dramatic role specially tailored for him) who's always on the hunt for orphans like Hugo with his sidekick, a dog named Maxilliman. He also spends the other half of his time hiding inside the clock observing the people whose daily lives encompass the station itself. This reviewer enjoyed how Scorsese and screenwriter John Logan delicately interwove the minor plot sequences (such as the budding romance between Lisette the flower woman [by Emily Mortimer] and Station Inspector) without overshadowing or overwhelming the entire main story itself even though majority of the movie's plot does take place inside this one particular station. We also meet other colorful characters who lives are part of this station directly or indirectly - like Isabelle (Chloe Grace Mortez), George Melies and Madame Jeanne's goddaughter who lives for adventure but only through the books she reads from Monsieur Labrisse's (Christopher Lee) bookshop/library until taken to see her first cinematic feature by Hugo, the Parisan band taht wonderfully provides the backdrop music for not only the train cafe but the entire movie itself and of course the mysterious Georges Melies who run a tiny toy shop where Hugo steals his gears and workings to fix the automaton safely hidden inside the clock tower. The automaton and the mysterry surrounding it does bring all of the major and minor characters gradually closer together especially during the film's conclusion - SORRY NO SPOILER ON HOW IT ENDS.

This reviewer fell absolutely in love with Hugo. It's beautiful imagery ...the splendid view of Paris in the 1930s (especially at night when you see it run like a fast moving clock) ...the splendor or this train station as well as the detailed gears and workings of the clocks - everything was simply breathtaking. She enjoyed the touch of history about silent filmmaking and how the early filmmakers created and at times invented the tools for filmmaking (still used today though by computer) ...plus seeing the vintage classic clips by Buster Keaton, Charlie Chaplin and Douglas Fairbanks Sr to silent war footage and the masterpiece itself - Georges Melies' The Trip To The Moon (ah, still a cinematic achievement in its own right after nearly 100 years). If there's a moral within this movie, then Scorsese has said it loud and clear - preserve and treasure our vintage movies for future generations to come. SouthSide highly advises that you sit through the ending credits to view the list of silent movies (including nearly 80 of Georges Melies' works) used for Hugo. Director Martin Scorsese has truly re-invented the movie-going experience for this reviewer ...she was delightfully entertained with the sense of that she had taken an extraordinary adventure. And with screenwriter John Logan, they both created a story full of imagination and wonderment for SouthSide instilling in her a deep appreciation for the early filmmakers, directors, actors/actresses and etc than before.

Howard Shore's music told a better story and left a far better memorable impression than the Reznor-Ross composition for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Shore's music not only enhanced each scene but was also a character in itself throughout Hugo. You could say it was the only non-speaking silent character that vividly expressed the mood of a particular scene or enlightened the audience to dream along with Georges Melies while watching The Trip To The Moon. SouthSide cannot stop raving about Sacha Baron Cohen's role after seeing this movie. It was utterly amazing to see this actor in a serious/dramatic role instead of his outlandish over the top comedic stuff like Bruno and Borat. Though having a few comedic moments within Hugo (i.e. like when his leg brace would lock whenever approaching the fair Lisette), he wonderfully demonstrates a softer side to him in which this reviewer hopes to see more of. And Jude Law's and Asa Butterfield's characters during their short scenes together had this natural loving interaction as if they were truly father and son and not just playing one on the screen. The same could be said between Sir Ben Kingsley and Asa Butterfield during their screen time together. Also, try spotting Brian Selznick (not credited in the movie) for his cameo as well as other famous Paris residents like Salvador Dali (Ben Addis) and James Joyce (Robert Gill).

SouthSide highly recommends seeing this heartwarming Scorsese cinematic feature on the big screen before it hits the DVD/Blu-Ray sales. One of the VERY best of 2011.

Photo0501 ~ Joey and Brad of Your Little Ponies

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's spreading more holiday cheer before taking a break. Tonight, she's attending a very special show hosted at Elbo Room featuring 2/3 (Brad and Joey) of the trio known as Your Little Ponies (http://www.myspace.com/yourlittleponies) rockin' the upstairs acoustic stage. Now normally, a typical Ponies' show would include songs about their favorite (sexual) things and/or activities with a slight bit of humor and wit woven into the lyrics and upbeat rhythms. Sometimes they do tend to get extremely explicit with the words - hey, they're known for being the "raunchiest local band" in town for nothing. However, since it was the holiday season, Your Little Ponies sort of toned down the raunchy act (not by much) but also featured more of seasonal flavor with some Christmas tunes mixed with their standards (ie, Pangea, Dude song and more). The audience enjoyed their version of Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer (in which includes a Rudolph rant) and Feliz Navidad ...YLP style and added lyrics. Plus this special performance featured acoustic honky tonk/country/bluegrass music by their friend, Mark Jordan. Even Joey, Elbo Room's loveable bartender, sololy performed a popular love ballad in which he wonderfully displayed a light-hearted vocal tone while bringing the words to life amidst a pictureseque imagery.

Besides highly recommending Your Little Ponies (whenever they get the chance to perform together as a band again), this reviewer suggests checking out singer/songwriter Mark Jordan who featured a soulful yet bluesy acoustic set as the Ponies' took an intermission, blogspot readers. Wow - he dynamically popped the acoustic room to life with his strong falsetto voice and intense twitterpating guitar rhythms featured in some of his upbeat style. Whether taking the voice down deep to stir your soul or energizing the room with passion (as heard in his cover version - Don't You Worry About A Thing), Mark definitely had a way of capturing not only the mood but the tone of each song randomly chosen to be performed. SouthSide liked how this cover version was given a bluesy sound off the acoustic guitar though retaining that lively R&B feel. His version of Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree had a lively yet funky country/blues rock sound which made this reviewer want to dance before turning a classic like Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas from a downtempo downer to lively acoustic alternative song to fit the party atmosphere felt within the lounge

28 Jun 12 - Ministry

Ministry 7

Hey, blogspot readers, it's "date" night during this special On The Town adventure. Well, not really an actual boyfriend-girlfriend date night for SouthSide. She's simply hanging out with one of her many buds - Shawn Kellner, keyboardist of Top Shelf Lickers. Together, we went to see the legendary Ministry rock the stage during one of their two-night Chicago performances at Vic Theatre. The band, now performing as an industrial metal, once pioneered the synthpop in the early 80s with hits like (Everyday Is) Halloween but during the late 80s (til present), Al Jourgensen (front man/guitarist) revamped Ministry's sound as well as its lyrical focus.

Opening for Ministry tonight was the Cleopatra Records duo - Blackburner (http://www.blackburner.org/), two of the creepiest "Frank" looking (Donnie Darko reference) characters ever seen on stage, blogspot readers. Shawn's take on their appearance at first was "...I'm so disturbed and confused..." due to the shock value this electronica/dubstep pair had during their performance. The pair appeared on stage with glowing LED eyes and bunny ears rockin' the audience with its hardcore guitar riffs amidst a disturbing array of laser lights, special fx (a fire extinguisher) and creepy electronica rhythms. As amazing as this opening set was, it soon fell horribly flat after reaching the middle of the set. Why? The momentum had totally lost its luster, the "Frank" weirdness was getting stale, and the crowd (including this reviewer) wasn't "feeling" the music and the performance. Truth be told - the performance even put SouthSide's "date" to sleep. The shock value could only go so far for Blackburner, blogspot readers, that they would have been more suited for a place like Neo and/or an event like Nocturna. Someone even posted on Ministry's Facebook page about the opening performance stating he or she hopes Ministry had a better opening act for their Friday night performance. One this is for sure, blogspot readers, the Ministry fanbase here tonight was going to be tough to please.

Not only tough but very, VERY impatient for their heroes to appear on stage. Tension was running high amongst the balcony as well as the main floor, blogspot readers, while the Ministry crew quickly set up the stage for the band. Excitement was at an all time high especially for both SouthSide and Shawn - this was our first Ministry concert. You could also hear the excitement from the many screams and hollering surrounding us (even through ear plugs) until ...darkness falls and up pops Al Jourgensen opening the show with a soliloquy about how you're worth more dead than alive to lead into the song - Ghouldiggers which featured a video to accompany it. Throughout Ministry's performance (which included two encores for a total of 19 songs), there was a video attached to each song performed to give a better understanding of the band's music as well as lyrics if not familiar with the "new" Ministry sound and look. SouthSide liked how Al and the band poked fun at Bush, Cheney and Powell (during No W) or protested our greed and need for oil from the Middle East and big oil coporations (in Rio Grande Blood that featured plenty of footage from Iraq "war"). As you see, blogspot readers, Ministry has taken a stance these days to enlighten the masses about what's happening in the world via their songs where it's mainly anti-something (i.e. religion, government, corporations, Wall Street, et al). And this truly delighted the crowd.

Ministry 10

After Senor Peligro, the crowd on the main floor was becoming agitated from the central theme heard within the tense yet hardcore industrial metal rock sound as heard in Lies and then 99 Percenters - about how Ministry hates Wall Street ...could say it's the unofficial official anthem of the 99% and Occupy movement. Between observing the band and crowd, SouthSide can honestly say that the majority do share Ministry's hardline political point of view. It's quite obvious that this band speaks to a generation that's disenfranchised by the set establishment or by how, for example, there are more "eyes in the skies" (Watch Yourself) or how violence still begets violence even if it's meant to bring peace (Life Is Good - that featured morbidly disturbing video images of people getting blown away by bullets ...this particular video made SouthSide a little squeamish). By this time, mini mosh pit riots were forming on the main floor while in the balcony the audience up here were beginning to revolt to fist pump and head bang to the harsh guitar riffs and wild industrial keyboard rhythms (which you sometimes couldn't hear above the rock side of Ministry). The performance ended with Kybher Pass to which this reviewer enjoyed the strange melodic guitar riff floating in between the pounding percussion in this metal song and the video accompanying it displayed images of Usama Bin Laden and 9/11  on the screen.

During the first encore, with the crowd already agitated and pumped, Pslam 69 and N.W.O. truly had things exploding into wild pandemonium - moshing and slam dancing ...ice and/or cups being tossed from the balcony. However it wouldn't be safe for long in the balcony either, blogspot readers. If Ministry wanted to cause a near riot during their first of two shows, then they certainly accomplished that and more inside Vic Theatre. The band even took a quick minute or two for  what they called a "pot" break before finally ending the show with United Forces. According to Shawn, Al had to be carried off stage by his own security team just to end the show. "...holy shit that was good! You know it was good when you get carried off stage..." Shawn also stated saying  it was an awesome show but the lead singer (Al) was shitty. It's a fair enough assessment, blogspot readers. And SouthSide concurs - the Ministry show was awesome ...full of that space cadet glow for this reviewer. She enjoyed the symbolism and political (as well as personal)  pov presented in each song to the music that sent chills down her spine from the guitar riffs and industrial sound. Then there's the legion of Ministry fans - young and old who were observed rockin' out to their favorite songs.

If you haven't experienced a Ministry show, SouthSide highly recommends that you do. For more information, visit Ministry at http://www.ministrymusic.org/.
