"...can I play with you? My band isn't really that great..."

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide has returned home!

Yes, after a couple of months of visiting other places (ie venues) around the Chicago local music scene, she has finally returned home to Elbo Room for a brief two-night stay to see bands Without Return tonight and Truckstop Darlin' (from Portland, OR) on Friday. According to Dave, owner, manager and bartender of Elbo Room, there are some exciting new things happening at this Lakeview venue - additional feet added to the downstairs lounge stage and a fresh coat of warpaint (of red and black) ...expect to see new photos of bands that have graced the acoustic and downstairs stages and many more. Plus this venue is getting ready for the annual one-day music and arts fest - I AM Fest which will be rockin' the House of Blues Chicago on Saturday August 24. More details about the 8 main acts and tickets as soon it comes, blogspot readers.

SouthSide highly suggests checking the unique semi-acoustic demo locally known as Without Return, blogspot readers, for their heartfelt tone as well as front man/guitarist Jack and his uncanny vocal falsetto comparison to Axl Rose. She enjoyed how this musician's raw yet emotionally dynamic voice not only popped the lyrics to life (like during City Lines or Fortunes of the Night) but amidst the semi-acoustic music of bass rhythms and acoustic melodies, she felt the words projecting the imagery from his dreams ...thus expressing Jack's deeper understanding of love and other things. Especially during No Light Tonight (based on a dream about him getting someone pregnant), the ballad wonderfully spotlighted the falsetto capabilities of his voice to which sent waves of heartfelt emotions down SouthSide's spine as he captured a lover's thoughts of worry and concern for the pregnant woman. Then while performing To The Sky (for those who have ever questioned anything), the downtempo rhythm spotlighted his vocal rawness while still retaining the ability to make you feel as well as experience his thought process behind the lyrics to this particular song.

As powerful was Jack's subconscious, blogspot readers, it was also amazing how Without Return's music captured the subtle tones and picturesque imagery to create a vibrant acoustic sound (when the song called for it) or gentle melodic downtempo rhythm for a ballad.  For instance, the closing song - Calm Winter, had that slight tinge of chill to the song yet you could see the picturesque images popping to life within the words with the acoustic guitar and percussion (shaker and tambourine) combined. Or feel the hurt and frustration of a man doing the woman wrong (from the male pov) in Field of Blood or the frustration of a person wanting to get out of that Small Town Trap, blogspot readers. The highlight of Without Return's set was their interesting cover version of the Lumineers song - Ho Hey to which they pointed out a unique fact about the lyrics. What made this cover rather interesting was the use of the mandolin melody to accompany Jack's acoustic harmony and vocal tone. It may have been a Lumineers song but tonight it felt fresh and new with Without Return owning it as their own, blogspot readers.

One On One with Gemini Syndrome

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide with another exclusive one on one feature with a hot band from Los Angeles currently touring with Mushroomhead! Since being unable to personally review and interview members of the band when they performed at Mojoes recently, this reviewer via email sent her interview questions which were answered by Brian Steele Medina - drummer of Gemini Syndrome. She would like to thank Brian for taking time out of his busy schedule to answer them and their management for setting this up.

SouthSide: Describe Gemini Syndrome's music in five (5) words or less and please explain why you chose those following words to describe your music.

Brian: Illuminating - Heavy - Intense - Melodic - Introspective. Illuminating: Music has the power to awaken us all from with in. Using this as a tool, sonically and lyrically, we try to bring light to ideas that may be in the dark, and focus to things that may not be very clear. Heavy: Sonically, and lyrically, our music channels a depth of emotion and understanding. Intense: Pushing our selves to extremes. Pleasure - Pain… It's how we know we are alive. In our music we create highs, lows, and in-betweens to sonically show the spectrum of life. Melodic: In all music there must be great melody and we keep this in perspective in everything we write. The melody or dissonance of a song is parallel to the harmony or disharmony of existence. Introspective: The finding, is always in the seeking. Our music is easily understood on the surface but also contains depth. The byproduct of this union is the ability to look deeper and come to realizations that wouldn't be possible on just the surface level.

SouthSide: What would you say influences the band's music and/or songwriting style?

Brian: Art inspires life, and life inspires art. Music, art, life experiences all inspire our creative process.

SouthSide: In your opinion, whom would you compare the band to and why?

Brian: We wouldn't really compare Gemini Syndrome to any specific band. Rather we'd compare it to the musical movements of the 90's and early 2000's. There was a diverse selection of sounds with a subtle, underlying themes that bound the bands together. We have taken our appreciation for these movements and the previous influences of these movements and made an effort to evolve from them.

SouthSide: Besides your current release, Pain and Pleasure, which other song(s) would Gemini Syndrome recommend listening? And why?

Brian: Every one of our songs fits a different emotion, so it's hard to say, but we have always gotten great feedback from the songs "Basement", "Resurrection", and "Take This". These songs just seem to resonate with listeners in a way that is unexplainable.

SouthSide: If given the opportunity, which artist (living or dead) would Gemini Syndrome like to collaborate or cover. Why this particular person or band?

Brian: It's hard to answer a question like this with various members having such varying musical interests and tastes. It seems a better fit to let time progress and see what opportunities become available and seize the moment with an influential collaborator than to pigeon hole and limit to just one collaboration.

SouthSide: Currently touring with Mushroomhead, is there a band or artist Gemini Syndrome would like to share the bill with and why?

Brian: Gemini Syndrome would be very pleased to share the stage with label mates Deftones and our friends Five Finger Death Punch.

SouthSide: Does the band have any plans of performing at any music fests like SXSW or something more local during 2013?

Brian: We are currently confirmed for Rock on the Range and Welcome to Rockville. We are in the process of confirming other festivals and will be sure to inform everyone as the details come along.

SouthSide: What's the one thing do you attribute your fans coming back for more Gemini Syndrome?

Brian: Synners (our fans) come back for Gemini Syndrome because our energy asks them to. We welcome them and appreciate their belief in us and always hope to give to them as much as they give to us. This unspoken understanding is what draws not only them to us, but us to them.

SouthSide: I'm curious about what the local scene is like in Hollywood, CA. How would you describe the music that's rockin' the stages? Which genre; is mostly grabbing the music fans attention these days?

Brian: The Los Angeles music scene has always been a melting pot of talent from all over the country and the world. There is definitely an inertia that is constantly pushing. The bands there are all diverse and cooperative with each other. The sounds are varied but cohesive with one another. The energetic and accessible sounds always grab fan attention.

SouthSide: Within the band community, is there strong support and involvement with each other?

Brian: There is definitely a scene living in Los Angeles. There is a community of bands that support each other on and off stage.

SouthSide: Is there any particular band SouthSide should be made aware of?

Brian: There is a long list of bands that we've played with in LA and support. Currently the most active bands are: Thrown Into Exile (http://www.reverbnation.com/thrownintoexile), All Hail The Yeti (http://www.facebook.com/officialhailtheyeti), Butcher Babies (http://www.facebook.com/butcherbabiesmusic), 9 Electric (http://www.9electric.com), Before The Mourning (http://www.facebook.com/BeforeTheMourning), and Consume The Fire (http://www.reverbnation.com/consumethefire).

SouthSide: Any last words, advice, shameless plugs that Gemini Syndrome would like to leave with the readers of this blog?

Brian: There should be no shame for anything you whole heartedly endorse. Take what you appreciate and put it on a pedestal. Remove yourself from any quicksand of negativity that keeps you in place. Always move forward and be the best you can be to yourself and others.

SouthSide highly suggests checking out Gemini Syndrome's current single, "Pain and Pleasure" on the band's YouTube website and the song also is free to download at http://www.geminisyndrome.com. The band will be rockin' out Scout Bar (located in Houston, TX) tonight and then it's off to Trees (located in Dallas) on Sunday. For the full tour schedule and where they will be rockin' at a venue near you, visit their official website or go to http://www.facebook.com/geminisyndrome and click on Tour Dates.

SEEKING DJS FOR WEEKENDS

Elbo Room is changing formats and only hosting bands from 8p-12a. On
the weekends we are looking to host DJ’s from midnight to close (1:30a
on FRIDAY and 2:30a on SATURDAY). It is free admission and in our
main music room with a full 3-way Electro-Voice sound system. DJ
would be on stage and would have to bring in their own decks, vinyl,
CD, etc. Elbo Room will have a Folding Table, Stage, Mics, DI boxes,
XLR cables, Monitors, Lights and Sound System.

We are looking to work with DJ’s to build these nights and find a
resident DJ for each night. We are looking for DJ’s to spin TOP 40
along with their own flare and mixes in between. Essentially get
people dancing, excited to party and DRINK! DJ’s will be compensated
with a $50 bar tab and 10% of the bar ring from MIDNIGHT to CLOSE in
the MAIN VENUE where they will be spinning. If a DJ has a good
following and can combine that with the in-house crowd and get people
drinking, they can make anywhere from $50-$250 for working 1.5 to 2.5
hours and getting the room packed and getting the party going.

HERE ARE THE DATES WE NEED DJ’S FOR (12am to close):
1. FRI MAY 25th
2. FRI JUN 1st
3. SAT JUN 16th
4. SAT JUN 23rd
5. SAT JUN 30th
6. FRI JUL 6th
7. SAT JUL 7th
8. FRI JUL 13th
9. FRI JUL 20th
10. SAT JUL 21st
11. FRI JUL 27th
12. FRI AUG 3rd
13. FRI AUG 10th
14. FRI AUG 17th
15. SAT AUG 18th
16. FRI AUG 24th
17. SAT AUG 25th
18. FRI AUG 31st

*************************************

[IMPORTANT]
UNDER AGED BAND MEMBERS: This is a 21+ show and everybody must have a
VALID ID to gain entry. If a member of your band is under 21, ELBO
ROOM needs to know via E-MAIL to BRIAN BENDER | Brian@elboroomLIVE.com
[9] These band members must be PERFORMING ON
STAGE in order to be in the club. UNDER AGED BAND MEMBERS are not
allowed in the club before or after their set with NO EXCEPTIONS. It
is important that when you book a show with an UNDER AGED BAND MEMBER
to notify BRIAN BENDER so you can play the beginning of the night. ALL
BAND MEMBERS will check in with the door guy before doors open and
UNDER AGED BAND MEMBERS will get marked and asked to leave the club
before their set. FANS, GROUPIES, MERCH CHICKS, CHILDREN, RECORDING /
VIDEO / PHOTOGRAPHY PEOPLE, ETC. cannot be in the club if they are
under the age of 21. NO EXCEPTIONS.

DRAW: Bands performing in the VENUE are asked to draw a minimum of 10
people to ensure production is covered and the band is able to make
money for their performance. It does no good for the club and no good
for the band if there is nobody in the venue. This is not a rehearsal
space; it is a live music venue. 1st time bands start on a weekday,
then move to a Thursday and then a weekend show based on their draw.
Artists performing in the COCKTAIL LOUNGE are asked to try their best
to draw. There is no production cost for this stage so the artist will
get 100% of what they pull at the door.

Let me know if you have any questions, comments, and/or concerns.

"Yeah, you guys are awesome ...we love you..." ~ Wildlife Control

Wildlife Ctrl 8

Hey, blogspot readers, nursing a "day after Cinco de Derby" hangover during this stormy Sunday On The Town adventure. This local party gal had the strength to rock another night inside Wicker Park's hip venue, Double Door to see her new friend Wildlife Control (NY-CA) performing on stage. She highly suggests checking out this local band who went on before Wildlife known as Brownie Mountain (http://www.browniemountain.bandcamp.com) for the eclectic mesh of punk/experimental within their instrumental rock sound. This lively quartet of musicians rocked the stage with such vibrant energy and momentum to match while coupled inside intense guitar riffs and percussion rhythms. This combination popped the ears with plenty of rockin' music foung in epic-like pieces cleverly titled Tip of the Iceberg (a song about touching tits) and Country Pop Hits #1. What this reviewer enjoyed the most about Brownie Mountain was their whimsical yet catchy song titles like Well Butter My Butt And Call Me A Biscuit or Jorge Wants To Go Hardcore But His Mom Won't Let Him which had her wondering what the thought process was behind some of them. In the end, SouthSide still enjoyed the wild and crazy guitar intensity as heard in Brownie's closing song that featured a climatic finish almost sounding like an experimental version to Issac Hayes' ending to Shaft.

Wildlife Ctrl 6

This brotherly duo, though living on opposite ends of the US coast, rocked the Double Door stage with a taste of summer within a contemporary/alternative pop sound to lift up everyone's soggy Sunday evening. SouthSide highly suggests checking out her friend Wildlife Control for this duo's burst of that vibrant summertime feel and sound paired with dynamically heartfelt vocals and contemporary piano rhythms. This reviewer enjoyed the refreshing vibe wafting throughout the venue as well as energetic momentum that sounded like a four-piece band rather than two musicians on stage especially during the opening song. Rockin' the stage with songs off Wildlife's current album - Spin, this band energized the Sunday night audience with a strong display of falsettos amidst an upbeat tempo as heard in Analog or Digital, Disguise and the title track, Spin. Blogspot readers will like how the piano rhythms added a certain amount of intensity to the duo's music besides a melodic flow of contemporary pop sound especially when wonderfully paired with a retro rock-n-roll guitar riff (as heard in Analog or Digital). In this particular song, SouthSide liked the energy felt and heard throughout the rhythmic tempo which had some in the audience dancing to the excitable beat. Even when taking that same energy and tempo down a bit, Wildlife continued maintaining that melodic piano rhythm before gradually upping the tempo again for another round of danceable beat. And, ladies, if lucky, you might be chosen to join them on stage for a quick spin around the floor. SouthSide also suggests checking out Wildlife's heartfelt single, People Change that rocked out their Chicago appearance with a bang, blogspot readers. 16 Mar 12

Hey, blogspot readers, there's a psychedelic vibe flowin' within this Irish celebration on Friday night. This On The Town adventure had SouthSide wearin' the green as she kicked off her long St. Paddy's weekend of music and fun at Elbo Room. She along with other prominent members of Chicago's local scene was on tap to officially welcome We Killed The Lion to the music family. So many bands represented under one roof there could have been a once-in-a-lifetime jam session on stage after the show. Also included on the lineup besides WKTL was other opening bands Foolish and Brothers Kung for headliner Luring Thieves.

SouthSide highly recommends checking out her friend We Killed The Lion for their groovi-licious, mind bending trip through modern psychedelia rock. Though minus the fun swirling neon lights and dazzling lava lamps in the background, this rockin' trio lit up the stage with a hot blast of vibrant electro riffs having the tendency of being calm one minute then intense the next (or sometimes both at the same time) and thunderous percussion drumming that had continuous psychedelic combination created unique rhythms to thrill and chill ...soothing melodic grooves intricately woven inside Lion's instrumental bridges and hard hitting rock sound to leave you breathless. Also SouthSide noted the way the band would cross genre within its base psychedelia music such as punk (as heard in the song Joan Jett) as well as inspire the mind with lyrical poetry (as heard in the song 7 Circles). Picking a song or two to suggest as recommended listening while acquainting yourself with We Killed The Lion was met with some difficulty, blogspot readers, since each song during this debut had its own way of engaging the audience into the energizing momentum. However, she did find a few noteworthy gems in which you can feel the psychedelic groove of what this band is vibin'. Listen to Backdown for its hot spitfire tempo which accompanied the rockin' electro riffs (loved the Frampton-like guitar whine) thrilling everyone to the bone until the last note; then, journey through Lion's Blackhole where Brian (front man and guitarist) projected a varying vocal range almost deept and grunge-like in a Kurt Cobain voice) while effectively conveying the one of the lyrics; feel the lull of Somnia amidst the wicked guitar work featuring some harsh riffs at the bridge while being devoid of any psychededlia energy; and check out The Starship and To The Sky together for one incredible trip through the electrifying groove of trippy psychedelia. Grab a free CD (and condoms - just in case of doing you know what after the show, blogspot readers) featuring songs - Joan Jett, Backdown and The Scene. Continuing tonight's psychedelia theme, this headlining trio rocked the late night audience to music from the other side of the spectrum, blogspot readers. Friend Luring Thieves wowed with another stunning performance full of instrumental compositions that featured more energizing sounds of thrilling electro guitar riffs and intense percuession drumming. This reviewer once again enoyed how each Luring member passionately a piece of themselves while performing on stage in which you could instantly feel the flowing vibrations of the strings strummed or the thunderous clash of the cymbals wafting around the basement. That's how intense this band's epic pieces were. Yet that's probably the main reason why Luring Thieves' songs contain no verbal or vocal lyrics. No human voice could match what was being played but still one could vaguely hear the soulful emotions intricately vibing through the guitar chords and drumming thus creating Luring's momentous high of rock sound when combined together at the right moment. At times, the "voice" (ie music) had a vibrant groove where Luring would play within an energizing rock sound meanwhile in others, the psychedelia took over immersing the audience into long trippy movement amongst the neon stage lighting. SouthSide liked how both bands were paired together back to back for tonight's Elbo Room lineup. Those who stayed for both sets really experienced completely two different sides of the same music genre for two solid hours. 11 Jan 12 - part 1: Common Shiner

...think Jake got a pair of panties...

Hey, blogspot readers, it's a double shot Wednesday! SouthSide's rockin' two shows around town during one incredible night. First, she's at Wicker Park's hip rock venue, Double Door, for another $1 show to see longtime friend, Common Shiner perform. This bargain priced local show also featured performances by Simpleton & City Folk, Michael Lux & The Bad Sons, Bobcat Williams and Little Big Fat. But alas, this reviewer could only stay for one performance. She had to dash away to her next show rockin' Whistler at Logan Square to hang out with Claudettess. Both are highly recommended in seeing at their next performances.

It has been a very long time since SouthSide last saw her friend and was very anxious to see how they've changed over the years. Performing brand spanking new songs (as well as a couple of favorites and cover), Common Shiner once again impressed this reviewer with the band's melodic piano-driven/contemporary pop rock sound and picturesque imagery within the lyrics. The trio of vocals by Michael (keyboards), Morgan (electric/acoustic) and Jake (bass) not only brought out the heartfelt tenderness heard inside Common's songs but also the meaningful yet inspirational messages.

For example, during one particular song, besides enjoying the boisterous power of the music and tempo, SouthSide found peace wihtin the inspirational words of encouragement when hearing "...with sharks around ...we die if we stop swimming..." Or listen to the picturesque story about Jacob (in which the soulfully dynamic music had the entire venue at a silent standstill until the last note died) as well as the optimistic poetry of the song titled The Optimist. This reviewer higly suggests listening to Common's Interdemensional Love Song though less symphonic in sound, she enjoyed the soothing contemporary pop/rock melody which spotlighted the emotional tone heard from the heartfelt lyrics. Plus the music vibrantly popped when the acoustic sound was replaced with electrifying electric riffs that sparked more energy without loudly overshadowing the fantastic vibe.

Besides rockin' the stage with a lively Go West cover of King of Wishful Thinking (an upbeat piano rhythm Common Shiner style), the band also rocked the stage with a lively version of their acoustic song, Sleep In (off Common Shiner's acoustic album). Despite now hearing the original version, SouthSide liked the upbeat tempo and pop/rock sound wonderfully provided within in this radio-ready tune for contemporary music listeners to enjoy.

Common Shiner needs your help, blogspot readers. The band is currently raising funds to finance their next album on indiegogo.com (it's almost like Kickstarter.com) - they know times are tough and will accept any donation amount that you can afford. Visit http://www.commonshiner.bandcamp.com or http://www.facebook.com/commonshiner for details.

16 Jun 12

Hey, blogspot readers, welcome to the sauciest, finger-licking fest in Chicago! Today, SouthSide and  her sidekick (her 10 year old daughter) attended the 6 Corners (Irving Park -Milwaukee - Cicero) BBQ Fest within the heart of Portage Park. The block long, two day festival featured an array of delicious offerings of ribs to burgers as well as pulled pork (and much more) smothered in some lip smacking bbq sauce from local restuarants in the area. Besides the tasty eats (and of course drinks), there were local vendors and businesses out in support of this family orinted event. And do you know what goes great with all this good food  and fun? Great music, of course, blogspot readers! This fest boosted an amazing lineup of performances by The Future Laureates, Waco Brothers, Charlie Baran & The Grupo Gringo, The Shams Band, Andrew Diehl & The Nightmen, Magic Box as well as Voodoo Kings (on the main stage) and The Polkaholics (on the north stage).

"...you're on fire tonight..." ~ August Forte of NoVo Arts, Inc.

Want to add some sizzle to your BBQ, blogspot readers, try a little Voodoo Kings next time. This local band not only electrified the stage with its unique "hot" (in a good way here) mesh of rockin' combination of punk/soul/glam/retro and more but also wowing the early evening crowd plenty of uplifting as well as spirited orgran-driven rhythms and tempos, twitterpating guitar riffs and (at times) 4-part harmonies (especially during American Lights) that melted the mic. This band constantly had feet moving to the beat and bodies (no matter the age) dancing which left many wanting "one more" song. Even while in a downtempo riff, one could still hear the boisterious energy flowing from the music straight down to the hot electric sound wrapped around the heartfelt vocals inside this toe-tappin' feel good music. This wasn't "sit down and enjoy" type of music, blogspot readers. Oh, no. Voodoo Kings certainly worked their magic in keeping most dancing throughout the set. Yet, what truly fascinated SouthSide about this particular band besides the "hot" music and rockin' sound, was the pictureseque imagery used during certain songs. For example, for American Lights - she vividly got the sense of being on a road trip with the Kings as they described different destinations along the way. Or listen to the anthem-like theme running inside Strong Will Survive ...or feel that Voodoo animialistic powress and roar when listening to Animal ...or feel that sultry as well as soulful vibe (especially inside the vocals) in When I See Her. But, beware, blogspot readers, Voodoo Kings will toss in some "hot" funk sounds at you too as heard during Last Child to which definitely had this crowd feeling (besides hearing) each vibrant guitar riffs to the thundering percussion and rhythmic blast on the organ. *fans self* The funkified sound was so hot Mother Nature rolled in the clouds and strong breeze to cool everyone down - now that's voodoo music magic at work. SouthSide highly recommends rockin' your next fest with her new friends, Voodoo Kings and bring your dancing shoes with you too. For more information, visit http://www.voodookings.com/.

"...Polka is the new punk..." ~ The Polkaholics

Now, after having some of the tastiest BBQ in the 6 Corners area with Voodoo Kings, you need to wash it down with something - like beer and polka! Don't laugh, blogspot readers, but SouthSide has special place in her heart for polka ...and who better rock a fest featuring their favorite thing in the world - The Polkaholics. This lively, energetic trio of over 50 year olds (who says you have to be young to rock a stage) once again brought their brand of polka/punk rock music creating a fun and danceable atmosphere for all ages as they performed their hits like Beer Barrel, Too Smart Polka, Blue Haired Lady and more. Yet, what makes this polka music quite special as well as unique is how they incorporate classic rock/punk sounds to the polka rhythms. Yes, it's true - polka is the new punk especially with this trio converting songs, for example, out of Iggy Pop's Lust For Life to Lust For Beer (which includes There's No Beer In Heaven) or the gospel song Revive Us Again (Hallelujah) into swinin' polka songs, blogspot readers. No song and/or genre is untouchable. Not with The Polkaholics making new converts one fan at a time. Even ever popular Chicken Dance gets its own polka sound as well as Ramones' Blitzkrieg Bop (turned into Blitzkrieg Bop Polka). During your experience with her polk-loving friends, you might also hear some Black Sabbath/Ozzy Osbourne, Deep Purple, and KISS - yes, this reviewer did say KISS as "...I want to rock and roll all night and party every day..." but here it's "...I want to polka all night and eat ribs every day..." Besides educating everyone about classic rock through polka, The Polkaholics also taught the crowd a thing or two about other polka styles or history such as German polka during Existentialist before dedicating Polka Celebration to the Chicago's polka king, Eddie Blazonczyk, who recently died at the age of 70. However, for The Polkaholics, every day is a celebration for their love of polka and of course, beer. And they did show their love for the malty brew by performing their one and only love song about it titled Old Style (then again - most of their songs has a mention or two about beer). You might think it's weird polka-ing, blogspot readers, but if you were at this performance, you could hear the impact this local trio has on its fans by the requests for songs being shouted throughout the performance as well as dancing bodies.  They even performed an encore, KISS My Polka - the band's first song written, and the crowd wanted more. "...America needs people like The Polkaholics..." according to one fan. So, beware ...The Polkaholics are bringing back the polka craze into the 21st century. 20 Oct 12 - Kasim Sulton

Photo0244

"...gotta play the martyr when playing at Martyrs'..."

Good evening, blogspot readers, it's an extra special edition of SouthSide On The Town just for you! Tonight, SouthSide enjoyed a rather intimate singer/songwriter acoustic performance by the legendary Kasim Sulton. His name should ring many bells since this bassist/keyboardist's name is attached to many well-known bands / artists such at Todd Rundgren, Meatloaf (on vocals - Bat Out of Hell II: Back Into Hell), Utopia, Joan Jett (member of the backing band - The Blackhearts), Cherry Vanilla, Blue Oyster Cult, Yellow Matter Custard (a Beatles tribute supergroup) - just to name a few. In his vast career, spanning decades, he has toured with other acts such as Hall & Oates, Cheap Trick and Richie Sambora and performed as studio musician alongside artists like Patti Smith, The Indigo Girls, and Steve Stevens. Also, Kasim has sang lead on Utopia's only top 40 hit Set Me Free (1980) and hit the Canadian Top 40 with Don't Break My Heart (1982).

So, after looking at a brief summary of this artist, one should get the feeling why SouthSide was excited to be part of this unique opportunity. It was more than just hearing music being brought to life amidst such heartfelt vocal falsetto, lively acoustic rhythms and touching yet inspirational lyrics. It was also about the stories Kasim shared with his audience ...little intimate details not noted on any CD or album cover about a particular song to life as a single dad with his son in Staten Island to which he emphatically stated that "...single parenting is not for the faint of heart...", blogspot readers. For the fans who attended this special early Martyrs' show, it was a chance for them to relive their Kasim Sulton memories through the particular songs performed. There were moments when this reviewer heard a few shouted requests (one in particular - Utopia's The Martyr even though he really didn't know all of the lyrics but did improvised a little). This audience was totally basking in Kasim's warmth and friendliness as well as compassion for the music during certain songs like Utopia's Lysistrata (which was a part of a CD giveaway where fans had to name the song after a few chords played). This particular did resonate very well with some members of the audience due to its peace activism.
"...How may here want to hear a Lorne Greene song?" That question had many suggesting Patches however Kasim lovingly soothed the tempered requests and the audience's music soul with another filling the peaceful venue to the command of his heartfelt falsetto which wonderfully captured the emotion and tone of the ballad performed. While not observing Kasim working his magic on stage, this reviewer also noted some the audience singing along with him from time to time to other songs like 15 Minutes (off his upcoming album) that perfectly captures everyone's desire of having their "15 seconds" of fame under a rather spirited tempo and upbeat rhythm though the lyrics do have a serious tone and meaning when he sings. Or check out the unlikely song (meaning unlike what he normally writes) titled Stand Up in which he wowed the audience with something he had never done before - performing an allegro (upbeat) acoustic tempo song that he just wrote. According to Kasim - it's about him but the preverbial "him". This particular song, blogspot readers, was quite motivational as well as inspirational that encourages everyone to "stand up" for themselves and be something. SouthSide enjoyed it for the heartfelt falsetto and the bridge where you defintely felt his motivational words speaking loudly through his voice. Kasim hopes to add this song to the new album.

Photo0250

Besides being a singer/songwriter, Kasim is also a wonderful storyteller. He regaled the audience with tales about his days performing at Durty Nellies with a Beatles-like band to his busy multitasking lifestyle in which he's between touring with Blue Oyster Cult, being a single parent, and recording the new album. Yet, his eyes would light up the entire room espeically when he told the story about his son who was suppose to be home doing homework and walking the dog not over his girlfriend's house that weekend. He did passionately speak about his involvement with the Band of Brothers project and Rockers In Recovery until getting somewhat heckled by an audience member to which he told him "...you see the show is not about you ...it's about me..." This project puts together 12 soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan who have been diagnosed with PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) and are given instruments. So far, blogspot readers, there have been 5 or 6 webisodes in which you can see at http://bandofbrothers.org.  And in one of the webisodes, the opening theme used was Watching The World Go By that you truly get the sense that every Kasim song expressed a sort of "every man (or woman)" sentiments inside the lyrics. He wonderfully captures what real people are thinking and/or experiencing in their lives whether it's love and relationship to socio-political ideals as heard in the closing song One World. During this particular, his assistant used his pivot head glasses to record everyone for his YouTube page.

However, the audience was saddened that he had to go. But before he did leave, we had a choice of hearing his version of Puff The Magic Dragon or the Bikini song. Someone wanted to hear Martyrs again as others were shouting their favorites to be heard and sung. To appease the audience one last time with his presence, Kasim closed out this special show with Baby, Don't Hold Back. It was truly a magical evening spent with this singer/songwriter and this reviewer highly suggests attending his next performance.

10 Jan 13

Hey, blogspot readers, if it's not loud, it's not screamin' hardcore rock! Tonight, after carefully navigating the stormy streets of Chicago, SouthSide's rockin' the Bucktown area at The Mutiny - the best dive bar ever to review hardcore punk rock music. It was screamin' ...it was loud ...and at times headbanging with hair flying everywhere as featured acts - Count Rugen, Evil Twin Sister and Cheer Up Mooncat rocked out the stage. Though being able to stay for Cheer Up Mooncat, this reviewer did check out the other two opening bands and highly suggests checking them out at their next shows.

There's something in the water up there in Waukegan that makes this twin thrash metal so screamingly evil that you not only got an earful but a faceful of this band's intensified anger and crazed madness. Yep, something's definitely in the water, blogspot readers, up there where Evil Twin Sister is from. This quartet of musicians not only broke the sound barrier for being the loudest thrash/metal band ever reviewed but they also knew how to pierce the eardrums a little even with earplugs on! And if The Mutiny had kept the volume on low during this performance, it would have taken away from the full effect of each vocialist sharing lyrical duties on the microphone especially when they performed the band's self-titled song - Evil Twin Sister. Yet, strangely, Evil did have its moment of "calm" and still retain some of that monstrous screaming and wailing within the intensity of the vocals amidst the grit of the electric guitar riff (as heard in the song Sling Blade). It was like watching a "woman" going through a rough bout of mood swings during "her" PMS cycle. Be prepared to leave this set feeling drenched from all of the frustration and anger Evil Twin Sister pours onto you. SouthSide highly suggests listening to Teeth and King of the World with the volume cranked up to its loudest setting. For more information about Evil Twin Sister, visit http://www.reverbnation.com/eviltwinsister.

Hey, blogspot readers, there's a special prize if anyone can tell her who is Count Rugen. Besides being a movie character (see a hint), it's also the name of this hair-raising metal band which was almost a direct opposite of Evil Twin Sister but still quite as intense amidist melodic side to its music. And when the music really gets going during this band's performance, watch for the long locks flying around the stage between BJ (front man on guitar) and Bob (bass and backing vocals). SouthSide loved the twitterpating electric riffs that allowed the ears to enjoy the soothing calm before being thrust back into the electrifying mix of crashing percussion rhythms and angered riffs again. She suggests checking out Count's Green Panda which had a sort of lullaby gentleness within but don't let that fool you one bit, blogspot readers, as this band will pump equal amounts of "in your face" metal guitar riffs during the chorus. It also spotlights BJ's heartfelt side to his vocals that make you feel emotionally the lyrics pouring off the mic. Then take a listen at the band's other song Nothing At All where this reviewer heard a little of psychedelia mixed within the opening before getting another earful blast of instense electric riffs blowing out the earplugs ...again. "...we're fuckin' going to rock like it's 1999!" ~ The Prep School Tragedy

TPST 2

Hey, blogspot readers, it's explosive after the 4th! SouthSide and her daughter, Sunday (name changed to protect her identity) spent their after the holiday fun at Reggie's Rock Club for a little education in shoegaze/industrial rock - The Prep School Tragedy style. Though, there was a sparse number of DelinQuents (the name for TPST fans) in the audience at this early all ages show, they still rocked the stage celebrating the official release of their debut CD - It's All A Show as part of the opening lineup that  featured Blackopz, [X]-Rx with Aesthetic Perfection headlining. SouthSide, for over two years, has watched this local troupe evolve from their zombie-fied makeup to their current status as a faux prep school-looking band with cheerleaders ...and soon a new mascot (more about that in a minute). After TPST's brief opening set, this reviewer had the chance to speak with Benn "Tran Q" Guy and Michael "Ignited" Hodes - the principle leads of this school gang about the band, CD and the mascot.

So, who ... or what is The Prep School Tragedy, blogspot readers? Well, it's definitely NOT Glee or High School Musical. "...sex, drugs cheerleaders..." or how about this answer "...sexy twisted energy..." According to the guys, they're just having fun with lots of guilty pleasure. And basically, that's true if you listen closely to the songs by TPST - there's SouthSide's favorite, SeduQtion (pronounced "seduction"), their hit - Thought I Toldja (check out the awesome video for this particular song on their YouTube page),  and Phoenix In the Sky. The Tragedy shows tend to get very intense due its hardcore guitar riffs and industrial/shoegaze sound, blogspot readers as well as sexually suggested because of the tasty eye-candy, the cheer squad, dancing on stage. Then, there are moments when this band can get extremely wide if performing a full 45 minute set. So this reviewer asked the guys why release the album now and not two years ago. The reason - they jumped the gun too soon with a release put out in August 2010 and it wasn't as polished or didn't have the music sound like what they have today. Now as a solid band, TPST team has their sound to where it should be "...like a fine wine..." have to do it right.

TPST 3

So, what keeps the fans coming back to a TPST show? For that answer, SouthSide spoke with a fan, Aydee who comment by saying "...[was] pretty amazed the first time seeing them ...having a band from Chicago is cool ...[they] have amazing performance..." Yes, they do, blogspot readers. As this reviewer mentioned earlier, their shows are intense and wild ...sometimes can get the fans along with the crowd agitated and hyped within the electrifying rock of the industrial sound. Yet, tonight, it seemed quite difficult for the guys and the band to even a whimper out the audience. Granted it was an early and all ages show for TPST but they still went onward as if the venue was packed with screaming fans performing a short selection of songs that included Hate Everything I Do. This reviewer (as well as Sunday who says "...they're cool...") enjoyed the energetic, fast paced momentum and the rosy cheek reactions from some of the audience members upon seeing the cheer squad's racy dance moves. It's definitely not a show without the cheer squad seducing and rockin' with the band ...but what's school without a mascot? So, does TPST have a mascot? Answer is yes but they wouldn't tell SouthSide what it is. "...can't reveal for many reasons..." says Michael and Benn. They had one in mind since the band's major DelinQuent Wolfie is no longer with them. This reviewer did her best in getting you, blogspot readers, the scoop about this mascot. However the guys remained tight lipped about it.

The Prep School Tragedy, to end the interview, highly suggests blogspot readers checking out their debut album in which you can get online at http://www.theprepschooltragedy.bigcartel.com/ as well their homepage  - http://www.theprepschooltragedy.com/ and Facebook. And be the hippest DelinQuent at your school, blogspot readers.

Hey, blogspot readers, who has the BIGGEST mouth among you?

SouthSide recently spent an evening at a battle of the bands competition where up and coming bands/artists were able to strut their stuff on the legendary Metro stage in front of family, friends and other students. Columbia College (of Chicago) Biggest Mouth 2013 featured 12 student band finalists performing a quick sample of their music like neo-soul fusion (Upsin Hounds), R&B/pop rock (Daryn Alexus) and more before judges to be crowned the best band. The audience also had a say in this competition too as they were asked to text their favorite of the night. Before attending the show, this reviewer (via telephone) was able to chat with Alma Cook of Alma about her music, the competition and what she hopes to achieve from it and much more.

Even though stumping the artist on the first question, blogspot readers, Alma described music as "...honesty and spiritual growth..." in which she places importance on the ability of connecting with people on what she has to lyrically say to them ...something that they will understand. For Alma, she hopes her songs as well as the lyrics themselves will have people in deep conversations where ideas and opinions can be shared together or one on one with her - which she likes the most. After each show, Alma makes herself available for anyone for discussion. "...It's all about us having different or opposing opinions rather not about me being right..." says this artist. Besides performing under her own band name, Alma is busy person performing within other artists/bands in different genres like a hip hop group to a folk music project that she just started. She also wants to be a part of an acapella group. By doing this, it will help grow into the artist that she wants to be.

Since this was her first time hearing about the Biggest Mouth competition, this reviewer asked Alma to briefly describe what it entail to which she stated Columbia College hosts a monthly battle of band  show and the Biggest Mouth happens at the end of the year. It started with over 130 bands before narrowing it down to the top 12 competing in front of an audience and panel of judges. Yet, to Alma, as a career prospective it wouldn't matter if you won 1st or 2nd prize. She simply wants "...to show people that I have something to say ...[it] doesn't matter if I win ...it's about building a fanbase..." in Chicago. Even though it was a brief set, SouthSide enjoyed her Metro performance liking the neo-smooth contemporary sound that had a lively rhythmic beat and energy. Her vocals were heartfelt as well as dynamic that definitely pleased the crowd. In case you weren't able to attend this year's Biggest Mouth, blogspot readers, you can meet and see this artist performing on the acoustic lounge stage at Elbo Room on May 14th during the "Women Rock" showcase.

This reviewer did stay for majority of the Biggest Mouth and found herself rockin' along with the dynamic vocal power during Daryn Alexus' set. She was hot! And that's putting it mildly, blogpsot readers. This artist literally had the crowd going when opening with a sultry R&B number before tearing the Metro with a thunderous rock show. Then it was Kylie Marcus who also wowed the crowd with another strong yet dynamic vocal performance despite noticing that her backing vocalist almost overshadowed her. However her cover of Heart's Barracuda (which she dedicated to her mom) seemed a little too old for Hanna's voice to handle. She didn't have the same vocal punch that the lyrics required to carry this song. Upsin Hounds had this cool neo-soul groove and sound which had many moving to the swinging rhythmic beat. It was quite funky and fun especially when the trio of female vocalists were harmonizing on the lyrics ...a touch of sexiness to highlight this group's stage appeal, blogspot readers. Though missing this band's Elbo Room performance (on April 29th), SouthSide will be on hand to cover their next show for a future On The Town review. The next band after them had the most difficult task of meeting the standard and level the Upsin Hounds rocked the stage with. For SouthSide, the music didn't seem to gel cohesively with the front man on vocals who was trying too many voice ranges during their short set. The band that truly had this crowd in a frenzy was Earl especially during the song Last Cigarette in which this reviewer enjoyed the organic feel (featuring a flute and saxophone) within the band's rockin' alternative/jazz rock fusion, blogspot readers. She however didn't care for the band's second song because the fluctuating tempos and rhythms were somewhat confusing to this reviewer's ears ...as if they were doing too much at the same time.
