23 Oct 12 - Rah Rah

Hey, blogspot readers, the fun never stops when rockin' around town with SouthSide. Tonight, she was suppose to be reviewing the Canadian band Rah Rah at Double Door. However, she missed hit. HOWEVER, she made up for it by snagging an impromptu interview with Marshall Burns (guitarist/vocalist) of Rah Rah to discuss about their live performances to what's the local scene like in Toronto, Canada.

SouthSide: In five (5) words or less, please describe Rah Rah to my blogspot readers.
Marshall: "...having fun and playing rock-n-roll..."

SouthSide: What makes Rah Rah's live performances fun and interesting that it brings your fans back to another performance?
Marshall:  "...one thing we started to do kinda fun with theactrics and robot cats ...big balloons that spell out our name ...confetti cannons [which was apparently used during their Double Door performance] and sometimes a candy-filled pinatas ...[We] sort of rotate through the fun to create a party atmosphere and try not to take ourselves seriously ...the songs are somewhat serious ...after waiting all day to play for 30 [or 45] minutes, we must maket the most of it..."

SouthSide: In Toronto, Canada, what's the local scene like? And is there fairly good amount of fan as well as other band/artist support?
Marshall: "...[It's] very supportive in the arts where we're from ...Toronto is like the size of Montana with small towns around it ...there's bands and clubs ...people are very supportive.."

SouthSide: What genre of music is quite big or happening in Toronto these days?
Marshall: "...there's a lot of punk, metal, indie ... a little bit of everyting ...[SouthSide asked if he saw an American influence on Canadian music music at this point] ...yes, there's some American influence in Canadian music ...I like city of Chicago and the band Wilco..."

SouthSide: Is it easier for an indie Canadian band to get their music heard on radio?
Marshall: "...yes, because we have Canada-only as well as college radio which makes it easier for bands like Rah Rah to get heard compared to probably here in United States..."

[At this point, SouthSide did ask Marshall if there was some way they could take back Justin Bieber. Marshall said he feels for us.]

SouthSide: In your travels thus far, what is your impression of the American indie/local music scene?
Marshall:  "...our New York shows went really well ...feel encouraged by the good responses ...we're going to tour the Midwest before going home for shows in Canada then hitting LA [by the end of November at Bootleg Bar]..."

SouthSide: Which selection of Rah Rah songs should my blospot readers particularly listen to first?
Marshall: "...the new record [The Poet's Dead] because it's fancy and new ...we're proud of it ...it's the first one we put a lot more time [and effort] and it shows ...there are three [3] other albums out there but start with the new one and work your way back through the previous ones..."

SouthSide: Do you have a wild and/or funny road trip story about your tour thus far?
Marshall: [He didn't remember one but said the other members of the band probably have one] "...Steve Earle [singer/songwriter, actor, producer] walked by me in New York ...didn't meet him..."

SouthSide: If given the opportunity, which artist/band (indie/mainstream living or dead) would like to collaborate with? And why? Which song would you work on together?
Marshall: "...Bob Dylan because he's the best songwriter I've heard ...wouldn't want to touch any of his songs but would like to get a couple of tips from him..."

SouthSide: Any last words or final thoughts about Rah Rah and its music that you would like to tell my blospot readers?
Marshall: "...the new record came out today ...hope people check it out..."

And off that new record, SouthSide recommends listening to Prairie Girl and Art and A Wife as well as visit their YouTube page to see the funny little 1:30  video called My Guarantee featuring fun with paper robots and birds.

Heads up, blogspot readers in Seattle, WA, Rah Rah will be performing on Tuesday Oct 30th at High Dive along with James Coate and Jess Grant Conspiracy. For more information, visit Rah Rah at http://www.rahrahband.com or on Facebook.

04 Sept 13 - MACHINA

Let's dance, blogspot readers!

Come to a mid-week dance party with SouthSide ...so put on your favorite shoes and dance the blues away!

Tonight, SouthSide continued her exploration into Chicago's dance scene and this time she's deep inside the underbelly of Metro - Smartbar. This underground venue is where you can go clubbing without leaving the Metro building after seeing a show (but you must be 21 and older). It's a very cool ...dark bar/nightclub that attracts up and coming to industry famous DJs. However tonight, Smarbar serves as the weekly hump day meeting place for MACHINA. A mini version of Nocturna (a 18 and older dance event that happens once a month on Saturday night) yet this event features alternative, industrial, goth, new wave, techno and punk music from 80s and 90s that many (like SouthSide) still enjoy dancing today. However unlike Nocturna,  MACHINA features a different DJ (or two) each week spinning your favorite songs and/or remixes until 4am ...oh before SouthSide forgets - it's FREE to enter. And since this was the first Wednesday of the month, DJ Scary Lady Sarah was at the DJ booth along with her special guests Jim Marcus (of Die Warzau) and Jason Novak (of Acucrack) - both  from bands performing at the upcoming Cold Waves II event at Metro.

When SouthSide arrived, Jim and Jason were already deep within their DJ set spinning exclusive Cold Waves II artist material and Wax Trax tracks as well as new and retro classics until Sarah took over again at midnight. Their two sets featured plenty of hard-hitting techno and bass-line electronic remixes (and more) that kept dancers on the floor demonstrating some of their best moves. And for a mid-week event, there was a good size crowd forming inside Smartbar, blogspot readers, having fun on and off the dance floor. Plus as an added bonus during tonight's MACHINA event, she was also raffling off two pairs of tickets to a lucky winner to attend Cold Waves II. Besides dancing under the dazzling lights, there was showing of random Aeon Flux episodes to help aid in the mood and atmosphere of MACHINA, blogspot readers. Yet, if dancing isn't your ideal fun, be seen at Smartbar! There are plenty of comfy seating along the bar and near the dance floor to do some serious people watching and/or enjoying a bar special with your firends. Some of tonight's MACHINA attendees came fashionably dressed in their "finest" industrial and/or goth attire ...or something in between - originality was the theme that ruled this club scene. You didn't have to dress to impress anyone except your own self, blogspot readers.

From a selected set list (as requested by MACHINA fans or Sarah), dancers crowded the floor to songs like The Smiths "How Soon Is Now?" to Skinny Puppy "Smothered Love" and Malcolm McLaren "Buffalo Gals". Other featured artists during her sets also included Ministry,  The Clash, Bow Wow Wow, Joy Division, Love and Rockets, Ultravox, Soft Cell and many, many more! With a list like this, DJ Scary Lady Sarah keeps the floor alive and dancing by mixing it up so there's a little something for everyone to enjoy all night long. Despite spending most of her night observing the happening scene around, SouthSide promises that on her next visit to MACHINA she would be hitting the dance floor more and writing notes less, blogspot readers.

Overall, blogspot readers, MACHINA is a happening scene in which SouthSide highly recommends checking out this Wednesday. It's a cool fix to get away from the mid-week doldrums before the weekend comes.

So Long 2012!

What a year 2012 was, blogspot readers! Besides preparing for a Mayan apocalyptic end that never was, we survive the ups and downs of Mother Nature’s wild weather ...learned how to “Gangnam Style” while “Call Me Maybe” against our will ...went on strike for better wages and benefits as US government works tirelessly (or not) to keep many from falling over the fiscal cliff ...took political sides rooting for Team Mitt or Team Barack in the most heated presidential race ever seen ... and witnessed another Disney sci-fi flop (WAY bigger than 1979’s The Black Hole) and then the mouse acquiring the force. There were many tears as we wept for the families affected by mass shootings as well as cheered (or jeered) for the passage of same-sex marriage and legalization of pot (within certain US states) ...and here in Chicago, watched another so-so sports season (well, SouthSide’s baseball team did quite well under their new manager) that ended with a whimper. Love it or hate it ...it was SOME year, blogspot readers.

Before closing out the year, SouthSide would like to take a moment in saying “goodbye” to the notable passings which happened during the course of 2012. They may be gone but won’t be forgotten...

SouthSide took a slower pace in covering Chicago’s vibrant local scene during 2012, blogspot readers, though staying busy by attending the annual events like BBQ Fest in Portage Park (June), Taste of Chicago (July), I AM Fest (in August), Chicago Ideas Week (October) and Chicago Roots Collective Festival (in November), she attended a couple of fundraisers and Nocturna events to rockin’ at live tapings inside JBTV studios (with The Parlotones and I:Scintilla) as well as discovering new (Swedish American Museum and Andy’s Jazz Club) and unusual (Blockbusters Video and Guitar Center stores) places to hear live music performances. Plus, this reviewer took some time out to participate in a few charity events such as Cancer Walk and Chords for a Cure. There were also fun (as well as interesting) On The Town moments where SouthSide enjoyed some steamy cabaret (Kiss Kiss Cabaret) as well as death defying acts by sideshow freaks (Gearbox Fantastique II) and delicious eats (Fatpour Tapworks) to checking out a legendary Ministry (at Vic Theatre) and a local farmer’s market (Independence Park). And she even appeared on television (WGN channel 9) and music video! It was definitely one exciting year for adventures.

Burlesque, furiously rockin' music, brass band, Latin punk rock and MEDS? Oh my!

Hey, blogspot readers, welcome to SouthSide's itinerary for her fun Saturday night On The Town adventure this weekend. This time she's perched on the balcony inside Wicker Park's legendary Subterranean attending one wild and furious CD release party hosted by friend, Furious Frank. Headlining the show, Furious Frank invited a few friends - Descarga and Four Star Brass Band to help celebrate the release of their CD - the Map & the Territory (review coming soon). And as an added special bonus, MEDS performed a rare acoustic set which was followed by Lady Jack teasing the audience with her sultry burlesque moves.

SouthSide recommends rockin' your ears to the hardcore Latin mix of electro pop/punk sound and lyrical angst and frustration sung in Spanish by her new friend Descarga (http://www.reverbnation.com/descarga). Despite hearing too much reverb feedback off the monitors, this reviewer enjoyed the "furious" tone set by this band in which was paired with the fierce intensity of front man Hector's vocals especially when he's singing the words in Spanish. Plenty of spitfire and raw rage here, blogspot readers, while he's rockin' the stage amidst a tense stage presence of expressive body language easily conveying what he's feeling. Thus inspiring the rest of the band to feel that same energy too, Descarga pumped the audience with hardhitting electric riffs and drums when performing songs like Funeral, Party Girl, Chemtrails (cool song about the planes spraying the skies) and Dejame Sabor. Meanwhile, Four Star Brass Band (http://www.myspace.com/fourstarbrassband) continued with the party atmosphere with an intense brass and percussion sound of New Orleans-style Jazz/swing music. Though overshadowing the vocals throughout the set because of the music's boisterious momentum and energy, SouthSide did enjoy how this band approached each song such as Goin' Down to New Orleans and Radio with a fiery spirit and tone before getting everyone in the mood for a little sexual groovin' with the Marvin Gaye classic Let's Get It On. Still this reviewer would have preferred to hear more of Four Star's New Orleans' Jazz which had definitely had the crowd dancing to the lively music rather than hearing over covers like the theme to Sanford and Son or Jackson Five's I'll Be There.

Don't let the band name fool you into thinking they rock with a metal or hardcore guitar rock sound, blogspot readers, they could but don't. Actually it's the direct opposite. Furious Frank operates within the realm of eclectic eccentricities when it comes to their core rock music and sound which at times has the band going in different genre directions ...meshing one or two at the same time thus creating a "new" unique music for each song. This was no surprise for SouthSide when reviewing Frank's CD release set which featured a few songs off their the Map & the Territory album since she was expecting nothing but fun ecelectic rock music to highlight the whimsical tall tales heard in the lyrics. After opening with an intense "furious" intro to prepare the crowd for a highly charged show, Frank in the mood to party all night long wasted no time in hitting the ears with upbeat tempo amidst a fast-paced rush of sound to get your feat groovin' to band's music. This reviewer doesn't know any other band that can rock a stage with an electrified Americana folk and Latin tango rhythms (as heard in Undercover - loved the crescendo rises with a carnivale tone to it) or Irish folk rock (as heard in Whiskey Row) as well as Czech folk music for Frank's Czech Xmas in Texas (which features Czech lyrics) and gyspy (as heard in Lament). SouthSide warned you - this band's eccentricities is what keeps them not being boxed into a single genre or music category. Furious Frank produced the type of music that's meant for standing and listening ...it did inspire a few on the main floor (and balcony) to dance long to the whimsical vibe during Whiskey Row and their Doors' cover of Alabama Song (which had this eclectic mesh of Irish/gypsy sound). If you think that's a little off, listen to the story about Giles Corey which was performed amidst a bluegrass/rockabilly sound before getting furiously rocked by the band's intensity in Trust Yer Rifle. SouthSide highly recommends letting your own eccentricity shine while rockin' with her friend, Furious Frank, at their next performance. For more information about this band, visit http://www.furiousfrank.net or on their Facebook page.

Vintage Blue at sound check

Road trip!

Yep, that's right, blgospot readers, SouthSide has embarked on her first ever road trip away from Chicago's local scene for the bright college lights of Madison, WI! And boy, did this reviewer witness some things that she'll never forget. She along with a few fans, band Vintage Blue, a penguin and banana (more about those two in a minute) invaded the dairyland up north to rock out the stage inside High Noon Saloon. This venue, a stone's throw from the Wisconsin's capitol building and University of Wisconsin, offered a certain rustic charm of a Western-style saloon with dual bars on other side. There's plenty of balcony space to sit and observe the floor show below as well as video games (pinball machine too) and pool tables to keep you entertained between bands. And the main thing SouthSide enjoyed the most was High Noon's frosty cold bottles of root beer! Overall, blogspot readers, this place was quite relaxing ...friendly but be forewarned - it's definitely a college party bar too. Many of  U of W students hang out here so do expect some wild party times happening inside this bar like it did on Friday night.

Ifdakar rockin' the stage

Besides, Vintage Blue, tonight's lineup also featured performances by Ifdakar, Evergreen and Asparagii. Sadly, this reviewer wasn't able to stay for the entire show but she did catch part of Ifdakar's wild, tripped out set that not only was accompanied by art in motion but also a penguin and banana rockin' with the other shiny happy people to the eclectic hardcore psychedelic guitar rock, blogspot readers. What can SouthSide say? Except you have to check out this band. Never had she seen a band create instant reaction and motion to their band in a heartbeat ...these college kids (and some older adults like this grandma) were totally electrified and hyped to Ifdakar's vibrant instrumental groove especially during the epic-sounding first song. This reviewer while enjoying the weirdness happening around her (and she definitely means "weirdness") also delighted seeing a local artist creating his masterpiece ...bringing this portrait of a woman to life from the music he felt and (probably) heard from the band and it's digital-wizardry fusion. Each Ifdakar piece performed had its own unique sound, definition, rhythmic tone and more without losing a single melodic beat as it kept this crowd of bodies erratically gyrating (now insert the "weirdness" here) in front of the stage as well as near the back. Whew ...it was somewhat exhausting trying to keep up Ifdakar but they're definitely worth a listen, blogspot readers, especially if it's a live performance.  For more information about this band, visit http://www.ifdakar.com.

"Like to say they had beautiful sax together..." ~ Ben of Vintage Blue

SouthSide highly suggests checking out her new friend, Vintage Blue for the band's heartfelt yet energizing pop/alternative rock that featured harmonizing vocals and a hot horn section to jazz up the band's core sound a little. Only 1 year and half old as a band (that also opened for Sister Hazel during last year's Summer Fest), Vintage rocked the stage with plenty of toe-tappin', feel good music sound that had the audience swaying to the rhythmic beat after opening the set with a rousing organ vibe during Alone. And let's not forget the cowbell (oh, you gotta have MORE cowbell!) adding fun amidst the steady tempo within Here To Stay until the horns blasted vibrantly during Set You Free across the stage to really rev up this dancing audience to life. She was wowed by the harmonies especially from Katie who had some in the audience wanting to hear more from her whenever this vocalist popped the words to life. Now SouthSide isn't big on bands doing covers during their sets however there's always an exception to that rule ...and Vintage Blue was that exception, blogspot readers. This local band didn't simply perform these hit songs like their original composition or as heard on the radio. No, Vintage played around with the songs ...sometimes meshing together a couple of stanzas from a song or two thus turning them into an entirely different song though consisting of the same subject. For example, check out their mesh of eclectic funk/soul/blues while performing Wheatus' I'm Just A Teenage Dirtbag before moving into Fountain of Wayne's Stacy's Mom and then Huey Lewis & the News' Power of Love (which featured the lovely yet soulfully divine Kate on lead). This rockin' mesh definitely had the audience groovin' now ...including a grandma showing off her best moves! Even their closer, Unchained Medley consisted of the original song before hearing David Bowie-Freddie Mercury's Under Pressure and Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby merging into it. Yet what truly made this particular song interesting was hearing the three different songs being lyrically sung individually at the same time. This reviewer recommends listening to Vintage's Speaker (a downtempo song but with enough kick to keep you dancing to the rhythms) and Chicagoan (which had some down home blues mixed by the funk and spunk within the alternative rock sound). For more information about Vintage Blue and where this band will be performing next, visit http://www.reverbnation.com/vintageblue.

30 Aug 13 - North Coast Music Fest: Day 1

Music, fun, warm summertime weather, colorful costumes, hoopers and heavy rains - that's how SouthSide would describe her first day at North Coast Music Festival held inside Union Park, blogspot readers. This annual music fest (now in it's fourth year) attracted a huge crowd on the first day as music acts like Ghosthouse, The Heard, Zebo and Howie Doin thrilled their fans with a rockin' variety of dance music from retro 80s pop/rock to funk and EDM (electric dance music) even while looming dark clouds threatened overhead. And taking a cue from Lollapalooza, North Coast soon enacted their emergency weather plan via Twitter, Facebook, et al and also on the video screens located on the fest grounds advising attendees to seek shelter from the impending storm. Not to worry, blogspot readers, the festival did resume around 8p to attendees for Passion Pit, Mac Miller, The Disco Biscuits and more.

This being SouthSide's first time inside North Coast she did overwhelm herself with all of the sights and sound this unique music festival had to offer, blogspot readers, that she burned herself out before 6p. Besides the music performances running constantly on five stages around this West Loop park, there's also a Living Art/Graffiti gallery sponsored by the Chicago Reader and an artist meet and greet at Thissongissick.com booth. SouthSide was somewhat in awe at the many attendees who come "dressed" up in their fest fashion whether it was in their flower power child hippie style to summertime hipster look or whatever was cool to them. However on this steamy hot day, staying hydrated with water was the object of the afternoon before heavy rains doused the music fest at the beginning of the evening lineup. Bring with you a clear plastic bottle to refill with water at the many water stations. When this reviewer returns Saturday afternoon for Day 2, she promises to slow down and pace herself to enjoy North Coast a little more.

In a nutshell, blogspot readers, North Coast is one amazing event. They have free bike parking if riding your bike to the park ...of course there's public transportation near by too. This reviewer highly recommends loading up your CTA fare card before entering the fest grounds so that way you're not stuck in the long lines at the fare machines when it's time to go. As a cool incentive, this fest also offers a VIP upgrade (have to be 21+) from your General Admission ticket to where you get awesome amenities like elevated viewing platforms, private bar (with way cheaper prices) and air conditioned bathrooms - just to name a few. Oh yeah, bring some patience with you while going through security. All bags are subjected to be searched, blogspot readers. And if you can't join in the fun, not to worry - you can always stream live performance feed at http://www.northcoastfestival.com/streaming.

One On One with Jesse Charbonier

This local artist embodies the essence of some of his favorite jazz legends from Billie Holiday to Chet Baker and Johnny Mathis including a bit from the Chairman of the Board himself (Frank Sinatra), blogspot readers. With the magical tone of his falsetto voice, this particular person has been known to make women swoon to blushing, grown men cry from painful memories as well as inspire the feeling of romantic love amongst many couples who have attended his Coq d'Or performances. And recently, he celebrated his first anniversary of performing at the legendary Drake Hotel with an extra special show featuring a full band held inside the famous Palm Court. Also, he performed during the Miss Continental finals at the Vic Theatre and soon will be making his New York Debut at Henry's (the old Birdland Jazz Club). SouthSide highly suggests spending an enchanted evening with your special someone while her friend Jess Charbonier tickles the ears with his magic, voice, and swinging jazz style as you listen to your favorite songs.

Descibing himself as someone "...always curious about the future because there's always something new and exciting on the horizon...", Jesse Charbonier has one unique resume for a multi-talented person, blogspot readers. Besides being an accomplished singer/songwriter, he's also a member of SAG (Screen Actors Guild), film producer (including a couple of movies for Telemundo) and organizer for the Mexican Film Festival of the Americas (which will happen in Chicago later this month). Yet during a recent interview before his Palm Court performance, Jesse revealed a major secret about himself ...well, blogspot readers, it was bombshell that left this reviewer completely floored. She had no idea that his Rhumba Supper Club performance over a year ago was actually his first show even though the way he commanded the stage and handled the audience had her thinking Jesse was a seasoned performer. According to him, he was coming out of a mid life crisis. "...sometimes you feel you're not being yourself as an artist..." Want to hear another bombshell? His audition to perform at the Drake Hotel turned into a last minute fill-in performance for a band which was scheduled to perform for a socialite event yet had to cancel. And the rest, they say, blogspot readers, was history.

So how did Jesse Charbonier fool SouthSide (and others) into thinking he's a seasoned performer? He had some help from a select group of well-known teachers, blogspot readers. Names that have graced stages all over the world ...and you might recognize them too. Through the wonderful use of  modern technology ie YouTube, Jesse took his cues from the greats like Smokey Robinson ("...I appreciate his vocal control and stage presentation...") whom he saw recently at Orchestra Hall performing with Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It was a moving performance for this local jazz artist because Smokey made him cry three times. Other legendary names also include Nat King Cole (if he could, he would like to do a duet with him performing the Chirstmas Song [Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire]), Johnny Mathis (another legendary artist he would love to do a duet or collaboration with) and his favorite artist, Billie Holiday. YouTube helped Jesse with live presentations and examples of showmanship especially when in a concert situations. SouthSide, after attending her fair share of Jesse Charbonier performance at Coq d'Or over the year, has to admit his studying their techniques as well as implementing his own style truly has paid off, blogspot readers, in a big way.

"...I think my real sincere joy is performing and responding to people ...not singing to them but for them..." says Jesse. This reviewer has noted on the many occasions that this jazz vocalist has a special way of connecting with and to his audience not only with the magical tone of his voice or personally meeting them between breaks as he works the room with his charming smile and charismatic persona but with also his eyes, blogspot readers. To do this, Jesse personalizes each song performed by reading and capturing the mood of the audience as well as his own. For example, Chet Baker's My Funny Valentine or Frank Sinatra's Fly Me To The Moon, Jesse might invoke the essence and spirit of the original composer and composition while singing these particular songs straight. However, there might be a night or moment when he might combine a bit of nostalgia and his own personal touch to the song ...and POW - what the magic explode. You never know what might happen. There might be a couple or two dancing on the floor ...a few tears shed ...or just people basking in the glow of romance while he sings. Believe or not, blogspot readers, Jesse never knows how he'll singe his vast repertoire of classic songs (most of them rarely sung Billie Holiday classics like Good Morning Heartache or Our Love Is Here To Stay). "...I sing songs [that] I really enjoy ...[thus making] sincerity come across..." while avoiding what irrates. Another Jesse Charbonier fact revealed to SouthSide during this interview. He notices everything ...and she means EVERYTHING. You may not notice him doing this but while he's performing your favorite songs, he's actually singing/talking with his eyes ...observing the tiniest of details like how people are sitting at the tables to which songs sparks those romantic feelings.

When at the Coq d'Or, Jesse starts off the night with a mellow background presence tailored made for the dinner crowd during the first hour so they can enjoy their meals without a noisy selection of songs. Afterwards (around 11p or midnight), his swing crowd arrives to party and/or for drinks and that's when the show goes into high gear with his selection of upbeat, lively tempo songs especially made for his regulars of dancing couples. As far as a set list to follow along during a Jesse performance, it's wise not expect one. Even this jazz vocalist likes to mix it up a bit for his shows ...sometimes performing requests from the audience or his own personal faves. As SouthSide mentioned earlier, it depends on his mood and the audience seated that night. However,  Jesse took a slightly different turn thus creating a swinging mix of upbeat and romantic classics for his special Palm Court peformance which got off to a bang with songs like Can't Take That Away From Me (by Ella Fitzgerald) to something more romantic for slow dancing like Nat King Cole's Walking My Baby Back Home. Jesse did make this reviewer tear up (again) when performing his sultry Latin-flavor version of Besame Mucho (by Mexican composer Consuelo Velázquez) to which some of the dancers did lovely interpretation of tango and rhumba moves on the floor. One could literally feel Jesse's strong and dynamic falsetto vocal piercing the heartstrings on the lyrics as well as melt during Adrian's (the man on tickling the ivory keys) vibrant piano solo. Esta mucho caliente, blogspot readers. Before taking a break (sometimes he forgets the band need to relax their fingers for a few minutes), he wowed the captive audience with renditions of a Eleanor Fagan (ie Billie Holiday) song dedicated to all of the lovely couples at the Palm Court and Chet Baker's Let's Get Lost. His second set featured more heartwarming songs like Johnny Mathis' Misty (to which brought a smile to SouthSide's mom's eyes and face), Billie Holiday's All Or Nothing At All, Chet Baker's Time After Time and some Frank Sinatra (The Lady Is A Tramp).

During the interview, SouthSide asked Jesse for his opinion why classic jazz songs by Sinatra, Baker, Holiday and etc have a lasting effect on modern music today. He replied "...I think [it's] the quality of the lyrics, the thoughtfulness of the lyrics, accessibility of the melody and [because there's] a lack of new music..." He went to say that new music is nothing more than hooks and effects (ie autotune). Plus each artist featured on the radio today are sounding similiar since vocals are not getting stylists or range to which he calls "...the age of the dance producer..." He used Nicki Minaj and Rhianna as prime examples of how their music is sounding alike though totally far apart as performers. When asked about Lady Gaga, Jesse said she's a performer because she can sing, play an instrument and writes her own songs despite noting her gimmick might get the best of her unlike rival artist Adele who has shown fans the "real" her (as in music and appearance). Jesse attibutes the rising popularity of jazz legends and their music to those people who appreciate quality music. "...they're searching for it ...people are discovering [and rediscovering] the Beatles and other old standards ...of how they feel and express themselves..." Jesse also did raise another interesting point about today's music being played on the radio - "...there aren't many popular love songs or ballads on the radio..." adding that "...even disco and 70s R&B songs had melody, strings, orchestrations and etc ...songs had little stories ...something you could relate too ...now it's all about party-party or boom-boom to bump-n-grind..." Yet, he doesn't fault the mainstream radio for this because in actuality with access to technology this is what the mass majority is listening and buying. So what does Jesse listen to when not crooning his jazz favorites, you might ask, blogspot readers?  He loves to listen to the "old school" R&B like Smokey Robinson and other Motown artists.

So besides celebrating his year anniversary at the Drake Hotel and soon his debut in New York, Jesse Charbonier has a full plate lined up for 2013 according to him "...will explode with a new album and featured film..." His song Let's Not Discuss It will be featured in an upcoming film The Resurrection of Joe Gitone and as film producer, he wrote a film Beautiful Sadness to which he hopes it goes into production soon. Now more about his upcoming album, he has written a few more songs like It Could Be In Paris, You've Been Dreaming and Billie, Tequila and Me (about someone having a bad breakup who listens to Billie Holiday and drinks tequila). He and the band will be working on the recording side during the winter months (ie January and February) since that's when his musicians are available. Or as he states "...as a musician you don't want to be out..." during the cold winter months.

SouthSide felt overly honored to not only meet and interview this wonderful person but also share his passion for the music amongst her friends who are now also huge Jesse Charbonier fans like her spreading the word about him. For more information about this local jazz artist and when he's performing either at Coq d'Or or Mellow Yellow restaurant (located in Hyde Park neighborhood), visit http://www.jessecharbonier.com.

The Aggrolites 2

Banana, blogspot readers!

If you have kids in the age range of 2 to 5 years old, then you'll get the reference to a song that's now stuck inside SouthSide's head. On Saturday afternoon, she and her young daughter ventured deep into the heart of NATO protest "war zone" to cover a free kid's show at Record Breakers. This extra special in-store event featured the reggae/ska/soul band The Aggrolites (CA) performing their Yo Gabba Gabba hit, Banana (as well as others) before rockin' out an older crowd below.

The Aggrolites 3

The Aggrolites, taking time out to hang out with their much younger fanbase, rocked out Record Breakers in a mini semi-acoustic set just for the kiddies upstairs performing the Banana song (a Roy Ellis cover) within a rockin' reggae/ska/soul sound and music for everyone to enjoy. After munching on hot dogs and soda, the kids along with many of their parents sang this Yo Gabba Gabba tune while dancing to the island tempo beat. This reviewer liked this band's lively acoustic reggae sound and style featuring guitars (acoustic, banjo and bass) and a simple tom drum for that rhythmic beat even while in downtempo groove during this 30 minute performance. Though not performing from a ready-made set list for the kids, The Aggrolites did take requests to which they did other songs like Complicated Girl and Jimmy Jack for the adults in the audience as well as more kid songs - Work To Do (about climbing trees and being safe ...it's also cool counting song for the kids to learn about subtraction) and Free Time (which was featured in a film called Band Slam). The mini store performance concluded, blogspot readers, with a whimsical nursery rhymed song before having to say "goodbye" to their little fans.

The Aggrolites 4

For more information about The Aggrolites, visit http://www.aggroreggae.com.

SouthSide's friend Elle Quintana (who put this show as well as many others for Reggie's) is planning more shows like this one featuring other local artists/bands performing mini sets for the kids scheduled for near future.

"...I love your hat ...it's a very beautiful festive hat..."
Kevin Crafton to SouthSide during his Elbo Room performance

It's beginning to be a rockin' holiday season around town, blogspot readers! Friday night, SouthSide kicked off a busy weekend full of holiday-themed fun and music starting at Elbo Room. There she was spreading seasonal cheer to the management and staff while enjoying the Raptor antics and Bambi rock/pop sound on stage. Though this would be the band's last performance for a while, it was also a special show for her friend Bambi Ramptor debuting new songs (with one featuring Kenny on lead vocals) off their soon-to-be released third album. Before their set, this reviewer was told to expect something different during this outting ...something not their usual Bambi music and sound, blogspot readers. A little more artistic as well as creative and (perhaps bordering on the) contemporary side compared to their other hit songs like Cosplay, Greenology, Away We Go or FAQ from their two previous albums - Conception and Adolescene.

SouthSide highly suggests checking out singer/songwriter, Kevin Crafton (IN) and his new song Washington Promises (from his new album coming out soon). Written WAY before the Occupy whatever became a fashionable movement of the decade, this song definitely captured the 99%'s political views of what's currently happening inside Washington D.C. ...the very issues that's affecting everyong - no matter what side of the percentage point you are on which were passionately expressed within Kevin's falsetto voice off the lyrics. You clearly heard the raw frustration vented towards the politicians and their never fulfilled campaign promises of "change" amidst the vibrant acoustic sound. She also recommends rockin' your feet to his upbeat tune Alright Alright which pumped some excitable momentum as well as melodic retro rock feel inside the riffs wafting throughout the crowded basement lounge. That toe-tappin' rhythm was quite contagious, blogspot readers. Meanwhile upstairs, good friend Kelsey Montanez was rockin' the crowd as she opened for headliner A Thousand Julys. And though missing her acoustic performance, SouthSide highly recommends checking out this dynamic female singer/songwriter - one of two breakout artists within Chicago's local scene who can emit some powerful diva-tude of emotions from their songs. She will make you feel things that you never thought were there, blogspot readers. As this reviewer told Kelsey's stepmom, Liz, she sees a lot of wonderful things happening for this artist in 2012 ...so watch out.

"...we've ALL seen the party room, Brian..."

If SouthSide had known it was a "formal" affair, she would have worn her (The Alley) tux t-shirt too to match with her friend Bambi Raptor, blogspot readers. This band was dressed to kill their loyal Raptor fans and audience with another rockin' performance that featured a few surprises and old favorites before taking a well-deserved hiatus from the dtage. Opening the show to FAQ and its energizing electro/pop sound, Roger (front man on vocals), Kenny (bass/vocals), Nick (drums), Gary (guitar) and Doug (guitars/effects) were ready and poised to rock out the main stage of Elbo Room with a momentous BANG! Bambi performed fan favorites such as Griffin (the Kenny emo screaming frustration in between Roger's calm falsetto voice on chorus ...also watch out for Nick's illuminating drumsticks) and Greenology (a fun ditty about nature within a pseudo reggae/ska guitar riff but not truly about that type of nature, blogspot readers). However, what really excited SouthSide tonight was the anticipation of hearing Kenny take on the role of lead vocals with the band during new song B.B's. This gave Roger a rare chance to amongst the audience while Kenny entertained the crowd with his unique yet monotone vocal style (with some screamo angst laced into chorus). His voice style totally worked this particular song amidst a sort of contemporary pop/rock music ...not the usual Bambi sound but this reviewer wholeheartedly enjoyed this new creative side to the "growing up" band. Other new songs featured in this performance included Alchemy and VPL (for some reason according to the band it's about Pinnochio ...who knows what lurked in the minds of these Raptors while penning this song). Plus there were surprises like a video shoot with working bubble machines for Border Patrol (which will be out in a couple of months) that totally energized their fans into a frenzy especially in front of the stage and a dedication to baby Jericho (the new Bambi Raptor coming soon to Gary and Rachel - Congrats, you two!) I'm Not Listening. And what would a Raptor show be without the fan sing along to Cosplay that features a small comedic bantar between Roger and Kenny. Yet the fun didn't end there until they were granted their first encore to which fans requested Alaska to close out this hot show. For more information about Bambi Raptor, visit http://www.officialbambiraptor.com or on Facebook.

"If you don't stick around for The Future Laureates, I'll wrestle you..."
Cobalt and The Hired Guns

There's no other like your own mother ...so treat her right

Hey, blogspot readers, this busy mom's rockin' out her Saturday night with not one but TWO shows! Tonight, SouthSide's hitting the streets going to two hot spots within Chicago's vibrant local scene where she celebrated a record release and then danced with the fashionable vampires til sunrise. And what an exciting (as well as busy) night it was during this latest On The Town adventure. First, this reviewer rocked Wicker Park's other hippest venue (that was once a Capone spot complete with hidden access tunnels), SubT (or Subterranean) while attending CAUDog's show featuring the release of The Future Laureates' Fortress Sessions CD. This amazing venue boasts a "crow's nest" view of what's happend on the main floor especially if reviewing the night's lineup performing on stage or if you want to get away from the crowd below. That's where you can usually find SouthSide, blogspot readers, up in the balcony and tonight, she was alongside with her longtime friend, Michael Teach of Chicago Acoustic Underground (http://www.chicagoacousticunderground.net).

CAU is every music fan's source for original indie music from across the United States and around the world. Michael and his hardworking staffers connects fans to the artists and vice versa through podcasts as well as music downloads, CDs and sponsored shows like tonight's. CAU's shows has showcased some of the best from singer/songwriters to full bands rockin' the local stages around Chicago like Brian Walker, Crystal Bowersox, Goodbyehome, The Future Laureates and more. Saturday's show was a record for SubT and CAU - a near soldout crowd thanks to hard work of the bands promoting this particular show. Also on the lineup in support of The Future Laureates' big occasion was Tree and friend Cobalt and The Hired Guns. SouthSide highly suggests rockin' the ears to the hip sound of "new" country/rock by the band - Tree. Lead by a dynamic female vocalist on guitar, this reviewer enjoyed the way this lively group rocked and rolled the packed main floor with upbeat tempos, rhythmic music and vibrant bursts of energetic momentum. Their style of country-folk mix brought a taste of hot summertime fun to SubT on a rainy night which also had this crowd demanding one more song when Tree's set was finished.

Then, SouthSide's friend, Cobalt and The Hired Guns continued with the night's rockin' theme of fun during their performance of alternative/pop/rock featuring an array of instruments in the band set up. The lively rhythms off the cello (at times), horn section and digital programming added those moments of boisterious music to pop the band's core alternative sound alive and kicking. However tonight, Cobalt added a female vocalist to the mix to counter as well as complement Tom on main vocals during certain songs featured off their upcoming new album. SouthSide, though couldn't physically hear her sometimes since she was overshadowed by the music, liked how her dynamic voice had the right range to be paired with Tom's heartfelt falsetto style during one particular song featuring a ballad-love song. The touching sentiments in between pockets of energy even while at the bridge where the music was intense to match the song's mood and tone could be felt besides being heard. Yet watch out, blogspot readers, when Cobalt and The Hired Guns truly get into the party mood while performing Of Summer. There's a wave of electro-energy and momentum flowing across the stage and into the crowd as they kicked up the vibrant bursts of music amidst an eclectic mix of alternative/punk rock sound. Yet what really surprised this reviewer was the band's switch out of their comfort zone into trying to be a straight rock band. And yes, Cobalt can actually be and have an ordinary rock band and sound when premiering a new new song as a test on the audience. Sans the horns and cello ...even without the digital programming, this band proved they can still rock the stage like a hardcore guitar rock band which also opens the vocals more. You can feel the emotional spite and fire especially Tom sang "...you never called at all..." - it was powerful but dynamic tone that gave SouthSide some shivers. SouthSide suggests rockin' the ears to More Than You Know and Like You Like Me Like Me as well as seeing them perform live again at Metro during their CD release show on June 16. This show will also feature friends How Far To Austin, Midwest Hype and Band Called Catch ...it's going to be hot 18+ show, blogspot readers. After introducing Ellis Clark (producer of many CAU Dog Records artists' albums including TFL's Fortress Sessions) to the crowd packing the main floor, Michael Teach then introduced the honored guests of the night - The Future Laureates, blogspot readers. Even before hitting one note, the band first honored their own moms and other moms as well as thanking everyone for out to the show. Then, finally - they got down to the business rockin' out their headlining show with a BANG of music that featured an Irish whiskey song (Moonshine) and guests musicians like Christina on violin and Joe Redman on guitar. SouthSide thoroughly enjoyed the vibrant bursts of TFL's momentous sound (and there were plenty, blogspot readers) that kept everyone whether they were crowding around the balcony or on the main floor deep within the band's alternative/pop sound. And not only does this band excite musically but also vocally as proven in the opener Galahad's Song which ended in a round robin-like of harmonizing vocals seperately then together. Even the crowd has their favorite TFL band member to which they started chanting "James" during certain songs like Escape From the Shadows (featuring his bass solo). SouthSide doesn't know where to begin to say about the band, its music and/or the show because there were SO many fantastic moments that happened ...and she's amazed that she was able to jot notes and rock out with them at the same time. To fair, she did pick a few highlights that she feels were special in her opinion. For example, when performing Carry Me Away and Kingston Blues, TFL wonderfully demonstrated their bluesy side of their music via a ukelele inside a downtempo groove and intense falsetto vocals. Both songs not only had them dancing a tiny jig here and there but also had many in the crowd joining in the fun alongwith them, blogspot readers. TFL boasts an infectious rhythmic beat and upbeat tempos that will instantly grab you especially when adding some pseudo ska into the rhythms (Kingston Blues). And then having the crowd doing reggae moves (how low can you go under the limbo bar), this record release turned into a wild party! The next highlight came when the audience of voices joined with the band during their cover of Tom Petty's American Girl. Though this wasn't the only moment where you heard the crowd singing (Creative Differences), SouthSide picked this moment because of the heartfelt vocals on the lyrics while in a livelier upbeat tempo than its original counterpart. Still it was something to witness when hearing 99% of the entire venue in one voice singing this classic Petty song shaking the chandelier rafters of SubT. You had to be there, blogspot readers, to see and hear this moment. The other audience participation moment came during Crooked Third Wheel and the special hand clapping at the intro of the song ...plus more sexy dancing on stage. This reviewer will stop right here - she doesn't want to give too much away about TFL and their show. She does recommend rockin' their next live show and snagging a copy of Fortress Sessions. 12 Apr 13 - Truckstop Darlin

Thumbin' a ride tonight to the nearest truckstop, blogspot readers!

Well, not literally, but SouthSide was rockin' and rollin' with this band from Portland, OR recently at Elbo Room where a vibrant combination of alternative/grunge rock and country/bluegrass rocked the stage. Come check out Truckstop Darlin, blogspot readers, in which you will be grooving to this band's rambunctious energy at their next schedule show.

Opening with Don't Walk Away, this reviewer was immediately liking the energized momentum felt by the band's unique genre combination which seemed not highlighted but also enhanced the heartfelt vocals and emotions on lyrics. Yet neither the grunge nor bluegrass sound tried to overpower each other throughout the set though giving the audience a taste of either when the tempo or particular song called for it. For example - listen to I See You, blogspot readers, where Truckstop  wowed the ears with some rockin' bluegrass rock music that spotlighted John (front man/guitarist) on lyrics thus bringing out the heartfelt emotions in the words meanwhile Same Old Story filled the basement lounge with an intense blast of alternative rock energy. SouthSide was utterly amazed how John's vocals seemed to naturally fit within either music spectrum without losing that emotional bind on the lyrics. There were moments when the music also brought out his raw vocal talent to truly pierce the heartstrings especially amidst the melodic tone of Dead Roses.

Though it might seem Truckstop Darlin doesn't do much talking in between songs, blogspot readers, but this band lets the music do the talking for them. It allowed the audience to bask within the melodic feel of the steel pedal which sometimes acted as the hidden third guitar (like in the song Dead Roses). Still this reviewer enjoyed how this band was big on calming pause within their instrumental bridges before picking up the original tempo again ...a clever strategic move that gives you the audience a chance feel (and hear) the notes played. Truckstop's music can get a bit rambunctious yet that's what the band intended it to be since their unique musical combination is meant for you to groove and dance. Think of it as rowdy music but with just enough grunge to bang your head to. This is why SouthSide didn't spend a single moment trying to compare this band to anyone else since Truckstop was unique in their own right. They even delved into some psychedelia during their closing number - Miss You More in which the lyrics had John popping with such vivid lyrical imagery, blogspot readers.
