29 Apr 13 - Motive

Hey, blogspot readers, it’s a busy week of fun adventures On The Town for SouthSide! She’s rockin’ around the local scene near and far covering shows and events at Millennium Park to Cobra Lounge and more. Her first stop happened recently at Schuba’s Tavern where she got the chance to check out the Brooklyn, NY band, Motive and Fall Classic.

SouthSide highly recommends rockin’ to the eclectic alternative rock sound by this local band at their next show which had a simplistic style amidst heartfelt voice on lyrics. Lyrically, she found them to have a similar songwriting style to Peter Gabriel in brought out the powerful emotions in the words thus complementing Fall’s one of a kind rock music. Though hearing some Lenny Kravitz music influence, don’t spend time classifying the band’s core sound since it combines more than one genre flipping it into something new for the ears. This reviewer suggests listening to Fear – you may get the feeling the notes/rhythms are somewhat out of place yet in reality, they’re not. For more information about Fall Classic, visit http://www.fallclassic.bandcamp.com.

Incorporating the taste of their hometown, Seattle, WA with the rock sound of Brooklyn, NY, Motive performed a highly energized headlining set of “...good classic [indie] electric rock show...” Though Chicago is still a new territory for this band, they have performed at other venues such as Wise Fools Pub and Pancho’s Bar (now known as Township) so this was a “...little miniature run before going home to Seattle...” for their west coast tour this summer. Sadly, this would be the band’s only Chicago appearance but you might see them rockin’ a local fest or two on their way back to New York. After opening with the rhythmic floetry of Summer Solstice, Motive didn’t waste any time popping the stage to life within a lively tempo that was little reminiscent of 70s ballad rock-n-roll, blogspot readers. This reviewer enjoyed the band’s energy that was not only projected in the music but also in the lyrics from other songs like Somber Days and Dance For Your Maker (lots of vibrant energy in this particular song that had SouthSide dancing). Yet amidst the fun and momentum, there was a moment of a slight political overtone heard in Mammals or a poetic imagery in the words in What’s So Bad?. While conducting a recent interview with Nick (front man and guitarist), SouthSide asked him which Motive song did he recommend listening to which he replied It’s Illicit and suggested checking out the Youtube video for it. He did hint that the remix version of It's Illicit (a bonus track on the EP) will also have its own video too. For more information about Motive, visit http://www.motiveband.com.

19 Mar 12

Well, blogspot readers, all good times must come to a rockin' end (for now). And it did on Monday night when SouthSide's St. Paddy's day weekend concluded at Double Door. There, she attended an extra special rock show (featuring live video streaming for the online audience) that included quirky tunes amidst a catchy pop/rock sound by The Family Dynamic and a whacky mix of off Broadway stage theatric/vaudeville like feel within a lively whimsical pop sound by Elvis Bride. This reviewer highly suggests checking out the instrumental guitarist extraordinaire Rob Scallon for his amazing display of intricate fingerwork amidst the selection of passionately intense strummed compositions. During his set, Rob electrified the stage with such emotional depth and fierce tone that SouthSide felt the music come to life under a soulful, breathtaking sound while being mesmerized by the soothing tempo. Within this artist's fingerwork intensity (especially along the guitar neck), one could hear the beautiful lyrics sung whenever he combined the intricate melodies and rhythms to harmonize as one voice. Visit Rob Scallon's Facebook page - Rob ScallonMusic - for more information and music.

Rob along with The Family Dynamic and Elvis Bride were the opening acts for headlining band, French Wives (from Glasgow, Scotland) who recently made an appearance at SXSW 2012 in Austin, TX. The Scots conquered the Double Door and its audience with a vibrant pop/rock sound that featured energizing momentum (especially the violin when used as a guitar), catchy hooks and dynamic vocal falsettos. This reviewer thoroughly enjoyed the way French's music instantly sprung to life from its distinct intense yet dramatic presence during any song's intro (for example listen to Numbers) in which the sound grabbed your immediate attention. Plus, if listen closely, blogspot readers, you might here the lively Scottish folk rhythms intricately woven around the band's rock base sound. This truly helped sparked the lively feel to the tempo within French's catchy hooks even while in a downtempo groove which wonderfully immersed the ears to their blended pop/rock tone. The combination help spotlight the dynamic vocal falsettos as heard in the opening song The Second when he sololy led the song full of raw heartfelt emotions before the rest of the band gradually joined in. SouthSide's heart was racing from the soft crescendo rise then - POW - a sudden vibrant burst that upped the tempo and sound into something poppy. It was the same explosive burst of emotions and energy felt during Numbers when his voice and music combined was definitely intense but not so much to lose their lively pop sound. This reviewer also suggests listening to the beautfiul acapella trio of harmonizing voices that lit up the stage when performing their hit song (sorry SouthSide missed the name of the title) and Sleep Tight before closing their Chicago debut with Younger (check out it on You Tube). French Wives will be releasing a new EP Dream of the Inbetween in May but in the meantime visit them at http://www.myspace.com/thefrenchwives or http://www.facebook.com/frenchwives for more information and music.

29 July 13 - The Hunt (Jagten)

When does a lie perceived to be the truth remain a lie before the truth is finally accepted?

That's the eternal question you must decide for yourself when seeing the Danish film - The Hunt. And in the end, it definitely be an in depth conversational piece .

The movie is about a kindergarten teacher named Lucas (Mads Mikkelsen) after a messy divorce is getting his life back together though having problems with his ex while entering a new relationship with Nadja (Alexandra Rapaport). Life seems to be on a gradually upbeat swing for Lucas until one day while playing with his students young Klara (wonderfully portrayed by Annika Wedderkopp) kisses him on the mouth while slipping a note into his pocket. Even though immediately having a chat with the little girl about kissing another adult (other than her mother and father) and the note (to which she flatly denies doing), he's accused of molesting her when she tells the principal Grethe (Susse Wold) the most damaging of all accusations - that Lucas exposed himself (i.e. showed his penis) to her. Now granted the principal had her doubts about the matter yet she pursues the matter by bringing in a child psychologist/DCFS-type worker to question Klara which not only has the lie spiraling out of control, blogspot readers, but it has other parents claiming their children were molested by Lucas after holding a meeting with them. This truly doesn't bode well for him since Klara is the daughter of his best friend Theo (Thomas Bo Larsen) and his wife Agnes (Anne Louise Hessing). Yet during the course of this, Klara does admit she said something stupid ...that he (Lucas) didn't do anything. However, since the lie is seen as the truth, the adults think she's lying to feel sorry for her accuser.

Besides showing how a child's little lie after being taken as a truth by everyone directly and indirectly involved, it also show how an accusation could instantly effect the alleged abuser and his family thus changing their lives throughout the course of the film. Not only does he lose his job at the kindergarten school and his girlfriend, Lucas loses the trust and friendship from most of his friends except Brunn (Lars Ranthe), his son's (Marcus portrayed by Lasse Fogelstrom) godfather. No one wants to believe and/or help prove his innocence. And even after the court finds no evidence of abuse, he's still viewed as an child molester where he lives to the point everyone in town continues to ostracize him which also includes banning him from shopping at the local grocery store (as so ordered by the store manager) all because they believe he did what Klara accused him of doing. Mads Mikkelsen in the role of Lucas shows the moveigoer (especially during the heart-stopping conclusion of The Hunt) that he always will forever be the victim of little girl's innocence lie never caring that he was justly vindicated by the truth and court. This actor wonderfully demonstrated a wide range of emotions from disbelief and anger (when being accused of the alleged crime) to frustration and hopelessness (after being acquitted of all wrong) and more while remaining relatively calm for the sake of his son ...especially when someone viciously murders the family dog.

There's three sides to the truth, blogspot readers - Klara's, Lucas' and what the director reveals during the course of the movie. This reviewer liked the fact that director Thomas Vinterberg didn't waste most of the run time fluffing up the movie with unnecessary details (like showing the investigation with the other children or Lucas' police questioning and court appearance) which would painfully drag the movie down and drift away from its focus on the main character - Lucas. Without those scenes in place you really don't feel lost or that you're missing something from the plot because the director allows the somewhat fast paced timeline summarize what happened in between through his characters. For example, we don't realize Lucas has lost his job until the scene titled December but you do get that general feeling since he practically lives in a dark house and there's dirty dishes and clothes strewn everywhere when his son unexpectedly arrives at his door. Usually reserved for a thriller/horror film not a drama, Thomas wonderfully uses the element of surprise in this movie to heighten the intense moviegoing experience with a few jarring, heart-stopping and panic moments that might have you clawing at your theater armrest, blogspot readers. On the flipside, there are some funny moments - be on the lookout for Fanny the dog to bark whenever someone mentions the name Kirsten. It's hilarious. And (without trying to give too much away) through the use of the minor characters towards the end, he also gave you the sense that some were able (a) to forgive and forget, (b) forgive but not forget or (c) still hold a grudge ...from afar.

If you want to see a thought-provoking drama and don't mind reading subtitles (though there are moments when it's in English), SouthSide highly recommends checking The Hunt (which has a limited theater viewing run).

21 Apr 13 - Oblivion

...Are you and Jack an effective team?”

The future looks even more bleak in the latest Tom Cruise movie, Oblivion, blogspot readers, and it’ll have you questioning the whys of your life and mission.

Based on an unpublished graphic novel by Tron Legacy director, Joseph Kosinki, it appears Earth has been devastated by earthquakes, tsunamis and more after an alien invasion destroyed our moon according to the narrative monologue by Cruise’s character, Jack Harper Tech 49, at the beginning of the movie. In a last ditch effort to save our planet, we unleashed a nuclear destruction which turns it into a radioactive wasteland. Jump to 60 years later, the war is over. We won but actually lost since the planet is no longer inhabited by humans. This opening premise of Oblivion tries to make you believe that everything presently is okay in paradise, blogspot readers, yet appearances can be quite deceiving.

Tom Cruise’s character spends his days fixing the Drones (like 166) that roam desolate planet on guard for aliens only known as Scavengers (or affectionately “Scavs”), exploring the desert wasteland that was once New York City and spends his nights in a seemingly effective team-run home with his communications partner and “lover” Victoria (Andrea Riseborough). She on the other hand is oblivious to Jack’s troubled mind (because of a recurring dream of a woman at the top of the Empire State Building) yet enjoys skinny dipping in the pool. Still there’s something about Jack compared to his counterpart. While he stays in awe with growing signs of plant life, Victoria’s more of a straight-to-the-point bot who doesn’t see the beauty of the potted plant when Jack brings it home ...she claims it could be radioactive and whatnot.

Yes, life for Jack may seem simple and somewhat mundane but he’s really the guy who heavily clings onto the past. If he’s not recalling the final Super Bowl moment ever played before the war, he retreats to his hidden cabin in the woods (that’s not within range of Victoria’s watchful tracking system) where he has keeps his collected memories ...mementos and remnants of the past civilization such as vinyl albums (look for Pink Floyd’s The Wall along with others like Duran Duran, Blue Oyster Cult), literary classics (like Charles Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities), and other things (look for his Top Gun sunglasses too). Here, he can “escape” life as a drone technician ...talk to fish while wading in the cool water and listening to Led Zeppelin’s Ramble On (or Procol Harum’s Whiter Shade of Pale, Jack’s favorite song). However, any kind of normalcy within a life like Jack’s has a way being interrupted, blogspot readers, especially when you meet two characters who can ultimately change and/or reshape it.

First comes Julia (Olga Kurylenko) whom Jack saves from Drone termination after her ship (named Odyssey) crash lands on Earth due to a homing signal allegedly planted by the “scavs” at the top of the Empire State Building. Her presence not only disrupts the seemingly “happy” life Jack and Victoria have built for themselves but also causes Jack to remember and relive memories from his past ...for example that Julia is his wife. Next comes Malcolm Beech (Morgan Freeman), leader of the remaining human survivors living in an underground Matrix-like colony for the last 60 years aka the “scavs”, who tells Jack the real purpose of the Drones that he repairs. They were designed to kill humans. Things suddenly begin to unravel as well as start clicking for Jack. He begins to remember more about his former life he once had while discovering the truth about the “company” he works for and ultimately himself after being advised by Malcolm to search for it within the radiation zone. Sorry, blogspot readers, no spoilers here but just know this ...all is not what it truly appears to be in Jack’s world ...he’s not really what he appears to be thus leading him to take action and fight against the Tet, the alien lifeforce that invaded Earth many years ago, with Malcolm and the other human survivors in the end.

Though Oblivion is actually an homage to the sci-fi films of the 70s (i.e. the spaceship Odyssey for Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey), Joseph Kosinki’s movie in way also borrows a few bits and pieces from other sci-fi movies like Independence Day (aliens invading Earth for our natural resources), Matrix and Terminator (machines designed to destroy the human race), Moon (references to cloning) and the original Planet of the Apes (the desolate landscape after some sort of nuclear attack). And despite that, he imaginatively creates a world where you can beautifully behold the visually stunning wasteland along with Tom Cruise’s character as he explores it on his Tron-like cycle. SouthSide at times was in awe at the amount of thought he and his team of set designers put into the contrasting destruction the alien invasion and nuclear aftermath for the New York area in the year 2077 ...aging naval ships laying stuck in sands to the Brooklyn bridge and underground decay of the famed New York Public Library (where Jack finds a copy of Plays of Ancient Rome). It’s not really a paradise you hope not to see 64 years from now, blogspot readers.

This reviewer enjoyed the contrasting characters between Tom Cruise’s Jack and Andrea Riseborough’s Victoria which sometimes had her sensing of two being cold and distant as well as loving towards each other ...sometimes at the same time. True, they were an effective team but not that effective if Julia’s presence could cause a rip between Jack and Victoria. Some might see that as the characters having no chemistry between them yet that’s not really the case, blogspot readers. Jack and Victoria are mainly paired together as co-workers and nothing more. It is until after Jack realizes that Julia is his wife that you’ll see Victoria’s jealous streak showing for her to report they (Jack and her) are not an effective team. She also liked how Morgan Freeman’s supporting character, Malcolm Beech, was channeling Lawrence Fishbourne’s Morpheus (of the Matrix trilogy) speak and wisdom when first meeting Jack during the latter half of the movie. The smaller role did have commanding performance even though information he tells Jack might seem a bit cryptic but as Jack unravels the truth about the Tet and himself, you understand why Malcolm didn’t shock him with truth all at once. Even the drones and the ominous “Sally” (think of her as Hal from 2001: A Space Odyssey) who can terrify the mind with her “are you and Jack an effective team” to “I created you, Jack. I am your God”. Talk about putting some sci-fi terror into a few words like that, blogspot readers, especially since it had this reviewer constantly wondering what would happen if Victoria said no they weren’t an effective team. Well, she definitely found out towards the end of the movie.

SouthSide knows there are complaints that Oblivion doesn’t have much or that it lacks in the action department than your typically average sci-fi genre movie, blogspot readers. Well, in honesty, this movie wasn’t designed to be an action sci-fi flick since the “action” part wasn’t truly its main focal point. There’s action but it’s strategically placed in between a well-scripted plot cleverly building itself as a thought-provoking cinematic feature that’s deeply rooted in an Alfred Hitchcook-inspired mystery. Some clues are quite obvious and pop out at you while others are more subtle yet they do gradually reveal themselves as the movie progresses towards the conclusion which is neither happy nor sad ...just hopeful. And as a music critic, she liked how the French electronic/shoegaze band M83 was tapped for this project to provide that futuristic feel and sound for Oblivion just like Daft Punk did for Tron Legacy, blogspot readers. The soundtrack features an opening sequence (titled Jack’s Dream) that gives the audience seemingly look at happier times as Jack monologues what happened to Earth before feeling the attention grabbing blast of electronica upon seeing the movie title. Other notable tracks off the Oblivion soundtrack include Tech 49 when Jack is exploring the desolate wasteland (beautifully highlights visual effects of a world that’s no more) and Oblivion (featuring vocalist Susanne Sundfer) at the ending credits.

Highly recommended.

HELP!

There are Robots and Hamburglars invading SouthSide’s next On The Town adventure!

That’s right, blogspot readers, recently this reviewer had the pleasure of meeting the local scene’s “Robble Robble” burgers thieves again and an army of “tripping balls” robots along with warrior and a guy named Rich rockin’ the stage at Martyrs’. Though not a “typical” SouthSide evening out, it was totally fun as she went from one extreme music to the next during tonight’s lineup featuring Captured! By Robots, I Love Rich and Beast Warrior with Hamburglars opening.

Beast Warrior (http://www.myspace.com/beastwarriormusic) somewhat reminded SouthSide of another band that incorporated the narrating of epic / heroic tales and battles but without the British glam and makeup as they rocked the audience with intense steel metal music, blogspot readers. With some flare, this band rightly paid homage to their glorious gods of rock and the olde kingdom of metal by blasting the ears with high-pitched vocals and energizing intensity off the guitar riffs especially during the epic-sounding instrumentals which many were head banging to. Oh there will be animalistic grunting in between lyrics for you to be fully immersed into that Beast Warrior mode with the band. There were a couple of things from this band she could have done without like their take on Medieval English as the ancient “scrolls” (in her opinion were not that imaginative) and the constant high-pitched screaming that was starting to get a little annoying after a few minutes. Also, this reviewer noted something must have been lacking either in the warrior gimmick or performance if Beast had to work hard in generating some type of reaction from the audience. Despite not fully liking Beast Warrior, SouthSide does suggest checking them out when they perform their next battle on stage. Meanwhile, I Love Rich (http://www.ILoveRich.net) was sort of the “lighter”, non-hardcore capacity to the metal genre yet don’t be fooled by that, blogspot readers, because this band can definitely rock with intense energy. Though not really having a noticeable gimmick, Rich did shimmer and shine while on stage in the glittering gold jacket ensemble to enhance the King Of Rock-n-Roll character portrayed. Fans will be sure to find themselves rockin and rollin to other songs like Makeout City, Let’s Fuck All Night, Are You Going to Love Me Tonight? and more featuring strong blasts of energy and fierce momentum especially when the band zips through its punk sound full of twitterpating riffs that at times drove this crowd wild for more. SouthSide like the fact I Love Rich had everyone having fun within their party atmosphere.

“...much safer to steal burgers...”

No one ...not even SouthSide actually knows what “...robble robble...” means in English, blogspot readers, but all this reviewer knows is that this local band LOVES their cheeseburgers! It’s the main subject in many of their songs. The Hamburglars, always dressed in their finest black and white striped jailbird suits with matching capes and masks, are a quartet of robbling musicians sing in this robble language throughout their set. And they have a lot of fun doing it too. Performing songs like Pies Lies, Damn Burger, Hamburg-A-Lor and Creep, Hamburglars had the audience enjoying their “robble robble” this and that in the lyrics (basically that’s ALL they use as lyrical words, blogspot readers) while entertaining them with other delightful tunes such as Shake and Supersize amidst their retro punk/rockabilly combination. Someday, this reviewer will have the band translated to what “robble robble” means but be on the lookout for Mic Burglar to jump off stage to steal a dance with you besides trying to nab your juicy two all beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese on a sesame seed bun. There were moments during this opening performance when the ears might be dazzled by the lightning fast riffs to rockin’ to the Hamburglars’ Robble-A-Go Go before their homage to AC/DC’s Dirty Deeds during the song Done With Cheese. If you’re lucky, they just might let you play in Ronald’s Playland, blogspot readers. For a “robble robble”good time with Hamburglars at their next cheeseburger-lovin show near you, visit http://www.hamburlgars.com.

“...are you ready to trip on balls?...”

SouthSide highly recommends checking out this band live in person because it was TOO incredible ...TOO tripped out ...and WAY beyond the norm of being ordinary. For the first time, blogspot readers, this reviewer found a whacked out concept that not only works within its own little weirdness but it was also she had never seen before to which there won’t be many spoilers in this review. Hence her recommendation in seeing this one-man band (and his robots) live at their next scheduled performance. Captured! By Robots (from CA) isn’t the first band to pique her immediate interest for a review or have a gimmick / concept for its live rock performance yet it’s the first band she has ever reviewed that mainly features animatronics rockin most of the band instruments with a human on vocals and guitar. Strange and unbelievable as this may sound, blogspot readers, Captured! will definitely capture your imagination as well as your mental stability while “tripping balls”. Don’t even try to fight the last part of the previous statement ...trust SouthSide because you will be “tripping balls” throughout the entire performance. After opening with a video statement (something about tripping balls), you shall be greeted with a costumed guy riding a motorized dildo unicorn while playing the tune When The Saints Go Marching In on trumpet. That’s when you know you have arrived and now can begin tripping balls. Before, this reviewer forgets, the lone human of Captured! By Robots would like you to know that he’s a douchebag (his words when standing beside her ...first time this reviewer has been spied upon) and all lobes and sides of the brain will be nonfunctioning for about hour or so as you’re dazzled by the montage of video images on the screen and robotic music performance rockin’ the stage. Tripping balls does require that you toss your senses out the door and trip out to the psychedelic punk rock sound in between the randomly crazed images running in sync with the music. It was a TOTAL freak out of the robotic kind as the band performs songs like In The Maze, Baby Po Po (a song about a baby possum) and I Hate You. During his “Milwaukee” performance (don’t ask, blogspot readers, for some reason he thought he was in Milwaukee, WI all night), one lucky woman got to be rammed by the dildo unicorn in front of the crowd while the band performed the theme song for this act. “...I see things you only dream about...” to quote the lone (costumed) human behind Captured! By Robots ...and yes, you will too when tripping balls during this strange yet fun performance. For more information about Captured! By Robots, visit http://www.capturedbyrobots.com.

15 Nov 12 - Double M Gala: Fund Raise the Roof

Photo0303

Hey, blogspot readers, SouthSide's in the cinematic spotlight! For tonight's adventure around town, this reviewer took a break from the bands to lend her support for a charitable fundraiser which pits music and movies together under one rockin' festival in the spring. CIMM Fest (Chicago International Movies & Music Festival) brings together just more than movies and music from all corners of the world but it's celebrating the "...inseparable connection between music and movies..." This four-day springtime event features premiere, music-centric films and live concerts at venues like Double Door, Debonair Social Club and The Hideout as well as DJ/VJ sets, Q&A sessions and live film-scoring performancs. Plus there's also Rock and Roll art exhibits and professional and entrepreneurial conference ...but more importantly, a mind-blowing experience that's fun! What's really makes this festival quite unique, blogspot readers, is that each of the venues (18 in all) are located quite close to one another along 5 CTA Blue line rail stops where each one will be hosting either one of  70 films (from 25+ countries) and/or 130 bands. The 2013 CIMMfest will run during the weekend of April 18th through 21st. Blogspot readers can expect SouthSide covering parts of this festival for a future On The Town review.

Photo0299 - Derek's masterpiece in motion

Yet to put on a festival of this size and magnitude, there needs a bit of help from people within the business or interested people supporting their love of unique combination of movies and music. Tonight, CIMMfest organizers held a fun fundraising party on the second level of The Zhou B Art Center (located in the Bridgeport neighborhood) where supporters, artists, producers, directors, DJs/VJs and more were able to converge and raise funds for this upcoming springtime event. There was live art in motion, blogpspot readers, by Derek Carier who was working on his huge masterpiece of intricate triangular shapes of all sizes and colours. SouthSide did take a moment or two to view the other interesting artwork around this room. She like one piece (sorry, don't have any information about it) where various classic albums were displayed on the floor to the mattress springs hanging overhead like a canopy or being used as a makeshift tent. You had to be careful of the sharp hangers of circled-punch out metal sheets that hung overhead in various locations throughout the venue.

Photo0302

Elsewhere inside this former industrial warehouse, there was free flowin' music from the many DJs like Derek Carter (who truly got this event feeling as well as reeling from the hardcore tribal mixes), Justin Long , SHUT EYE and 8FATFAT8 - just to name a few while attendees could mingle around with friends or watch on two huge screens various movie/music projects from last year's CIMMfest. Some being shown were documentary to narrative films or music videos by international artists/bands. SouthSide found some of the movies to be very intriguing and thought-provoking to quite humorous in nature. For example, one (by A Wrong Way Productions) featured a rather interesting look into what happens inside a series of bathroom stalls ...a weird expose of people doing everything from gangland style murder to a Nazi preaching his politics and more besides going to the bathroom. Another in which she liked though not being able to hear this particular video (featuring music by Young Circles)  the images on the screen ran almost in sync with the featured DJ's club remix of Sugar Hill Gang's Lala Song.

Photo0304

Attenion, filmmakers, bands, artists, et al, there's a call for entries for CIMMfest's happening April 18th through 21st. Visit http://www.cimmfest.org or on Facebook, Twitter and/or YouTube sites for more information.

Without your support, blogspot readers, CIMMfest wouldn't be able to celebrate the inseparable connection between music and movies for over four years. This organization needs your help in making Chicago International Movies & Music Festival 2013 the best ever! They want you to be a part of something extraordinary. CIMMfest is a 501(3)c non-profit ...so your donation is tax-deductible. Visit http://www.cimmfest.org for information on how you can help.

24 Feb 12

Hey, blogspot readers, it's a "double shot" of Elbo Room! Tonight, SouthSide returns again to get a rockin' jump start to her weekend with long time friend, Alaya Conscious along with other bands - Artists vs Athletes and Chicago Thrash Ensemble. Though missing part of Artists vs Athletes' premiere performance, this reviewer recommends checking out this up-n-coming rock act for the band's emotionally charged yet intense melodic rock sound and vocals in which rocked the stage. She liked how each member of this quintet group poured spontaneous energy and momentum into each song performed even while projecting a subtle downtempo rhythm at times. You could literally feel the instrumental vibrations i.e. from the guitar riffs to drum precussion (especially during the closing song) rockin' your soul. SouthSide was impressed by the emotional angst vocal style that accompanied Artists' lyrics popping the words to life ...indeed feeling the emotional sentiments not just simply hearing them. Blogspot readers should expect a full review on this band in the near future. For more information, visit Artists vs Athletes at http://www.myspace.com/rockava.

SouthSide wishes she could recommend checking out the headbanging thrash/metal sounds of Chicago Thrash Ensemble, blogspot readers, despite enjoying the hardcore rock this lively group presented to the crowded basement lounge. This reviewer did like the thundering riffs and highly charged energy off the drums yet she couldn't fully get into the band's front man. Though liking his emotional angst in the voice, she couldn't actually feel that ram primal sound whenever he popped the words to life ...plus the flannel attire wasn't really helping to promote the band's metal/thrash image when everyone else was wearing t-shirts. And judging by some of the crowd's reaction to Ensemble, not many heads were banging to the harsh music but it did spark a few brief moments of moshing and slam dancing near the front of the stage, blogspot readers. SouthSide does recommend rockin' your head to the song about being f-upped by the shrooms while at the Morton Arboretum. SouthSide does recommend that band work on keeping that energy and momentum going between songs - the long breaks in between did help lose the crowd a little thus somewhat slowing down the set. Also, suggests working on ending the performance better than abruptly ending it which in turn left the room confused and cheated out of a huge finish. Finally - the switching the band name (from Contact High to Alaya Conscious) throughout the set - not really funny. It may not be SouthSide's rockin' kind of band however she knows there are fans who would be interested in Chicago Thrash Ensemble. For more information, visit this band at http://www.myspace.com/chicagothrash.

ER 4

Long time friend, Alaya Conscious, got down to the immediate business of rockin' out this crowded basement lounge by pumping melodic yet intense guitar rock music. SouthSide enjoyed how the musicians incorporated wicked aria-like instrumental sound within the bridges to literally soak the ears (as well as soul) into each vibrating rhythm and note immersed into each song. Coupled with Elbo Room's lighting fx, this truly enhanced the crowd's Alaya experience doublefold, blogspot readers, especially during the band's opening song - the intense sound and lighting ran in sync with the pulsating vibe of this melodic yet very energized tune. Besides wowing their fans with Screaming Still (another example of how Alaya combines the melodic sound with intense energy and poetic lyrics projected wonderfully together within both music and vocals), the band introduced new song - Thrones (title track, maybe, off upcoming new album). Immediately this reviewer felt the fiery spite, blogspot readers, laid deep within guitar's riff intro ...this truly captured the audience's attentive ears. The music during this particular song absolutely highlighted the powerful falsetto vocal style by front man Evan (also on guitar) while amidst the thunderous riffs and percussion. This was one song in which SouthSide highly recommends enjoying the Alaya energy and momentum while banging the head to the music. Throughout Alaya's headlining set, the crowd was treated to intense yet soulful sparks of fiery sound and rhythms ...lyrics containing heartfelt floetry and emotions (check out the song Grace) amongst the twitterpating guitar riffs and energy that left the crowd wanting more by this band. Sadly, blogspot readers, The Alaya Conscious did leave everyone hanging until their next show scheduled for March 3rd at Brauerhouse (located in Lombard).

27 Apr 13 - Nocturna

They come out at night ...that’s when these fashionable vampires party especially til dawn at the monthly Nocturna meeting, blogspot readers. SouthSide highly recommends attending the next one happening in May at Bottom Lounge (more details on date when it comes) if you want to be seen and/or dance to the requested playlist of classic and modern music featuring industrial and post industrial to shoegaze and more. Hosted by the fabulous DJ Scary Lady Sarah for nearly 25 years, this monthly event gathers cross-generational spectrum of partygoers from all walks of life under the space cadet glow while she spins from the stage. It’s a fantastic way to hang out with likeminded people as well as meet new friends free from any social competition. Yet, tonight’s Nocturna meeting was a little special for this reviewer – she was officially celebrating her 44th birthday.

One of the main things this reviewer enjoys about Nocturna is that you don’t have to outdo the next person while in your punk, military, steampunk or whatever the creative mind desires, blogspot readers. Personally, this is your night to strut the style that’s designed and fitted to you as well as your personality. For example, SouthSide went for her classic boyish look in her tuxedo t-shirt (from The Alley) ...perhaps for the next one or the 25th anniversary one, she’ll wear something different. Here, while people watching (a favorite past time amongst some of the Nocturna attendees), you can also draw inspiration from what the others are wearing. What’s popular? Well, the color black and leather seems to be the popular trend (even in summer) but also the 50s look ...the military and of course, the post industrial and punk were present. No matter the fashion that was represented tonight, there was plenty of creativity rockin’ the dance floor.

Speaking of dancing, blogspot readers ...there’s NO dance competition! Trust, SouthSide on this fact. Seriously, everyone here in attendance does their own thing on the main floor. Whatever or however the song moves you to move – that seems to be the basic rule amongst the Nocturna regulars. You have plenty of space on the main floor to show off your fancy footwork, blogspot readers. There was a couple doing an tango during one song while one woman was seductively enchanting a few with her belly dancing. As this reviewer noted earlier, the songs aren’t personally picked by DJ Scary Lady Sarah but by Nocturna attendees. Here’s a tiny sample of the songs recently featured on Saturday night – The Cure’s Fascination Street, Zola Jesus’ Vessel, Nine Inch Nails’ Wish, Duran Duran’s Planet Earth, Project Pitchfork’s The Longing, New Crayon’s Pitch Black ...even Psy’s latest Gentlemen was requested. And don’t think SouthSide spent her entire evening reviewing the fun. Oh no, she was out there with the others dancing too. But do take a break and enjoy the sweet candy from the cauldron (located near Sarah’s booth) to replenish you sugar level.

Besides the music, dancing and hanging with your friends, Nocturna’s also about supporting local artisans and vendors, blogspot readers. Tonight’s special focus was on Paul Stefanik representing Phantasm Interiors (http://www.phantasminteriors.com) – a home decorating design business for those who want that “Everyday is Halloween” feel and decor or something vintage to your personal taste; and the other was Dreaded Jenocide (http://www.etsy.com/shop/dreadedjenocide) – “...the place for lovely spooky things...”. This reviewer highly suggests checking out the fashionable hair accessories (hair clips, bows and handmade wig pieces) to leather skirts, ear bobbles and much, much more. All pieces displayed Saturday night were reasonably priced for purchase.

Stay tuned to this blog for details of when the next Nocturna meeting will be held at Bottom Lounge. However, please make plans to attend the 25th anniversary Nocturna party happening Saturday June 22 at Metro ...it’s 18+ to enter / 21+ to drink / $10 entry fee.

Also every Wednesday night at the Smarbar (located in the underbelly of Metro), there’s another dance event but geared for the 21+ crowd (sorry, kiddies) that starts at 10p known as Machina. This free event features a crew of rotating DJs (like Scary Lady Sarah – 1st Wednesdays only, Greg Corner and Trancid on May 8, and DJ Psycho Bitch Teri Bristol on May 15) spinning the best from the 80s and 90s of new wave, industrial, classic house and techno until 4a! SouthSide will be there Wednesday to review the happenings at this mid-week party just for you, blogspot readers.

what defines you as an artist is that you never give up

Hej, blogspot readers, it's an extra special On The Town adventure and this time, it takes place inside a museum! Tonight, SouthSide's rockin' the heart of historic Andersonville to meet and review singer/songwriter Sofia Talvik and her performance at the Swedish American Museum. Founded in 1976, this lovely place is "...dedicated to perserving [the] Swedish heritage and educating all generations and ehtnic groups in Swedish language, art, culture and traditions..." The 24,000-square foot building (located across the street from its original hardware store location) is home to three exhibit areas, a library, classrooms, offices and a gift shop as well as a gallery featuring contemporary Swedish art. The main attraction of this museum is the re-telling of the story of Swedish immigration to Chicago told in two different points of view - one for children and the other for adults. SouthSide's planning to visit again with her family especially during the holiday season for Lucia, Sweden's winter festival of lights and other Christmastime events. For more information about the Swedish American Museum, the hours of operation, admission and more, visit http://www.SwedishAmericanMuseum.org.

Currently on tour for the next two years, this reviewer highly suggests checking out the heartfelt poetic floetry within the docile-like expressive vocals amidst pop/folk music by Sofia Talvik. This Swedish singer/songwriter delightfully entertained her audience under an atmosphere of warmth and friendship while sharing funny tidbits of life on the road (traveling with her husband) or her childhood and a wonderful selection of songs that included some off her current album - The Owls Are Not What They Seem. While tuning her guitar, Sofia regaled the attentive listeners about purchasing and then decorating a RV (that was parked at the Walgreens down the street) with items at Ikea to what inspired her to write about her songs Flo-rida and Jonestown. SouthSide liked the one story of how she promised to perform the rest of her set in the nude if the bar patrons would sit quietly through one song without talking. Needless to say, blogspot readers, Sofia has yet to make good on that promise though she did say it was okay for the audience to get naked if they wanted to. That and other slices of her life brought the connection between artist and audience a little closer each time before performing a song that seemed to coincide with the central lyrical theme or subject.

Photo0867

What impressed this reviewer the most was the beautiful and rich acoustic sound of Sofia's unique take on the folk genre which featured a bit of urban pop under a contemporary vibe thus leaving this reviewer the difficult task of what to spotlight in this review. After opening with the gentitle atmosphere of an acoustic downtempo rhythm found in King of the Willow Trees, Sofia's performance contained a selection of songs from her previous albums Flo-rida (title track full of image-laden lyrics under a lively pop tempo and feel) and Jonestown (another title track based on actual events to which this songwriter still gets chils whenever she performs this particular song) as well as a Glenn Campbell cover - Witchita Lineman (loved Sofia's vocal style on this 70s contemporary ballad that's somewhat told from a female prospective, blogspot readers) after revealing she's a fan of this American singer/songwriter. She even caught his "Goodbye" tour performance at a rodeo which according to her was amazing and appalling at the same time - the rodeo that is. Yet if SouthSide had to truly choose which Sofia Talvik moment as her favorite, she would suggest the following highlights but in no particular order.

Delusional (off Sofia's current album) - for the way the arrangement spotlighted this artist's vocal tone amidst acoustic tempo that also featured a steady percussion sound to counteract but not overshadow her docile voice. Plus the sad tone does tug on the heartstrings especially when she sings some of the lyrics in Swedish; Ghosts - the song that started it all, blogspot readers. SouthSide enjoyed the lively tune amidst an upbeat rhythmic tempo especially for a ballad about a relationship torn apart by an old flame who refuses to move on; Turn Me Over - for the vibrant acoustic sound which nicely highlighted the dynamic side to this songwriter's vocal style. Sofia popped the lyrics to life whenever she became more emotional and expressive bringing a vividly clear image to this reviewer's heard while admiring the Swedish artwork around the walls; At The End - a wonderful yet heartbreaking song about the trials of touring and a relationship that ends badly because of it. One could clearly hear the sadness and heartache wrapped inside the downtempo rhythm and acoustic song highlighting Sofia's voice especially at the end when she gets soulfully dynamic; The Garden (off the current album) - this reviewer enjoyed this particular song for its dark, haunting tone that came with chills down the spine (even off the acoustic riffs) though it's filled with such lovely romanticism, blogspot readers; Something Good - Sofia's heartfelt, feel good song of the night. SouthSide highly suggests listening to this lively song when you're having a tough day and nothing seems to be going right ...try this song for some inspiration; and lastly but certainly not least, the Swedish folk song, blogspot readers, which was also the highlight of the night. Sofia totally shined as an artist while beautifully expressing the Swedish language and poetic floetry to the audience. And even though not knowing what was being sung, SouthSide observed the many mixed reactions to this particular tune - of teary eyes to proud beaming smiles on faces all around her while hearing the lovely spoken words.

There's plenty of time, blogspot readers, to catch this singer/songwriter at her next live performance. She plans on visiting the both sides of the US coasts as well as many cities and towns in between. For more information about Sofia Talvik and where the RV heads next, visit http://www.sofiatalvik.com.
